In Rider Magazine’s first ride at a Royal Enfield event in Los Angeles, it was comfortable over rough freeway pavement and reassuring on canyon roads. That ride also revealed its limits: modest cornering clearance and a front brake lever that needed firm pressure and gave limited feedback. Those impressions come from one media ride, not a long-term test or instrumented comparison.
How does the Royal Enfield Shotgun 650 ride?
Rider Magazine reviewer Greg Drevenstedt rode the Shotgun 650 in Los Angeles in 2024. He found the upright riding position, mid-mount footpegs and compact dimensions gave the bike a playful feel, despite its claimed 529-pound wet weight. The suspension handled all but the worst freeway bumps during his ride, and on Malibu canyon roads he found the bike easy and reassuring to ride.
That confidence has a boundary: cornering clearance is limited. The reviewer’s advice is implicit in the bike’s behavior—wide, flowing lines suit it better than aggressive cornering. These are observations from that event ride, not a claim that the Shotgun will behave identically for every rider, road or setup.

Is the Shotgun 650 comfortable?
On the Los Angeles ride, Drevenstedt reported that the bike remained comfortable over rough freeway pavement. He described the standard saddle as firm and supportive, but restrictive when he wanted to move around. Combined with upright ergonomics and mid-mount pegs, the seating position suited his ride; that does not establish long-distance comfort for every rider.

Is it a two-up tourer or a solo custom bike?
In stock form, the Shotgun 650 is configured around solo riding. Royal Enfield positions it as a customizable motorcycle inspired by the SG650 Concept and the 650-Twin platform, calling it a “blank canvas.” The brand announced 31 genuine accessories at the January 2024 launch, including bar-end mirrors, a sculpted solo seat and contrast-cut billet rims. Rider Magazine also lists a passenger seat, windscreen, auxiliary lights, flatter handlebar, skid plates, highway bars and luggage among accessory options.
A passenger seat and luggage can change the setup, but the available ride account does not establish the Shotgun as a ready-made two-up touring bike. Confirm model-year and local-market fitment before buying accessories; availability and equipment may differ by market.

The Shotgun 650 uses Royal Enfield’s 648cc air-oil-cooled, SOHC parallel twin and a six-speed gearbox. Rider Magazine reports the manufacturer’s output claims as 46.4 hp at 7,250 rpm and 38.6 lb-ft of torque at 5,650 rpm. Royal Enfield’s technical sheet lists the corresponding figures as 34.6 kW at 7,250 rpm and 52.3 Nm at 5,650 rpm.

What did the 2024 Shotgun 650 cost?
Rider Magazine’s August 13, 2024 U.S. review listed a base price of $6,899 for Sheet Metal Gray and $7,099 for its Stencil White test bike. These are historical review prices, not current dealer quotes.
Royal Enfield’s January 2024 launch announcement listed starting prices of INR 3,59,430 in India, £6,699 in the UK, and €7,590 in Germany and France. Those are launch prices for the named markets, not present-day quotes; local trim and pricing differed. Check with a local dealer for current pricing and availability.

Equipment and launch colorways
Royal Enfield’s January 2024 announcement described LED lighting, digi-analogue instruments with Tripper navigation, Royal Enfield Wingman connectivity and a USB charging port. It named four launch colorways: Stencil White, Plasma Blue, Green Drill and Sheet Metal Grey. These are launch-release claims; verify equipment and color availability for the specific market and model year.
Who should consider the Shotgun 650?
The first ride makes the strongest case for a rider who wants an upright, solo-oriented cruiser with custom styling and a relaxed approach to canyon roads. It is less compelling if your priorities are generous lean clearance, highly communicative front-brake feel, or a stock setup designed for regular two-up touring. A test ride can help you judge the saddle and brake response for yourself.
