The 2024 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum AWD pairs a comfortable, technology-rich cabin with a V6, a nine-speed automatic and a manufacturer-listed 6,000-pound maximum towing capacity. That makes it a credible family SUV for road trips, poor-weather driving and properly equipped towing—not proof of serious off-road ability. Nissan’s “return to rugged” language describes its positioning; the available specifications do not establish how the Platinum performs on difficult trails.
What the Platinum AWD is—and is not
For 2024, Nissan sold the Pathfinder in S, SV, Rock Creek, SL and Platinum trims. Platinum sits at the luxury end of that lineup. Its combination of three-row seating, comfort features and available Intelligent 4WD suits family travel and outdoor-oriented use, but the Platinum’s upscale equipment should not be confused with a dedicated off-road package.
Nissan describes the Pathfinder as having up to 80.5 cubic feet of cargo space with the second and third rows folded. That is a manufacturer-published maximum; it does not describe the space available with passengers occupying those rows.
Powertrain, fuel economy and fuel
The Platinum 4WD uses Nissan’s 3.5-liter VQ35DD V6, rated at 284 horsepower at 6,400 rpm and 259 lb-ft of torque at 4,800 rpm, paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission. Nissan says regular gasoline can be used; premium is not required, although the company says premium fuel provides increased horsepower and torque. Actual performance varies with conditions.

Check the exact vehicle and accessory fitment before buying crossbars; compatibility information does not confirm that every listing fits every Pathfinder configuration.
AWD and towing: useful capability with limits
Nissan offers Intelligent 4WD with a seven-position Drive and Terrain Mode selector. It gives the Pathfinder selectable settings for different driving conditions, but the published equipment information alone does not establish performance on demanding off-road terrain. Treat AWD as useful traction capability, not a substitute for suitable tires, careful driving or a vehicle built specifically for difficult trails.

Nissan’s 2024 brochure lists a maximum towing capacity of 6,000 pounds for the Platinum 4WD. The brochure also describes that figure in the context of properly equipped models, and Nissan cautions that capacity varies with configuration. The headline maximum is not a blanket assurance that any trailer or payload combination is safe.
- Confirm the tow rating for the specific vehicle and its installed equipment.
- Account for passengers, cargo and trailer load; towing capacity does not erase payload or other vehicle limits.
- Follow the vehicle’s owner’s manual and Nissan’s towing guidance when selecting, loading and towing a trailer.
Original price and what it tells used buyers
Nissan listed a $51,520 starting MSRP for the 2024 Pathfinder Platinum 4WD when new. That historical launch MSRP excluded taxes, fees and destination charges; dealers set actual prices. It is not a current used-market value, and it does not establish what a particular vehicle should cost now.

Verdict: premium family utility, not proof of trail toughness
The 2024 Pathfinder Platinum AWD makes a strong case for buyers who want a well-equipped three-row family SUV with a V6, selectable AWD modes and a manufacturer-listed towing maximum. Its strongest evidence of premium character is the cabin and convenience equipment. Its published specifications support practical all-weather and towing use when the vehicle is correctly configured and loaded, but they do not demonstrate hard-core off-road performance. Buy it for the comfort-and-capability mix, and verify the specific vehicle’s equipment and limits for the work you expect it to do.
