But “perfect stepping stone” is too strong. Cars.com praised its acceleration and agility while criticizing its harsh ride, limited visibility, cramped rear seat and price. It may suit drivers who prize performance and style over comfort and practicality; a test drive is essential before deciding.
What is new for the 2024 CLA 35?
Mercedes-Benz USA describes the 2024 update as bringing redesigned headlights and taillights, an AMG-specific grille and revised front fascia. The AMG Performance steering wheel is standard on AMG models, and the latest-generation MBUX infotainment system uses an AMG-specific screen design. These are the U.S. update details in the manufacturer’s 2023 newsroom announcement.
What power does the CLA 35 have?
For the U.S.-market 2024 model, Mercedes-Benz lists a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder producing 302 hp, paired with an eight-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 8G dual-clutch transmission and AMG Performance 4MATIC all-wheel drive. A 48-volt system and belt-driven starter-generator can provide a temporary 13-hp boost, as well as support coasting and energy recuperation. The boost is temporary; it should not be added to the engine’s stated 302-hp output as though it were a separate continuous rating.
A separate Mercedes-AMG technical sheet, effective 10 June 2024, lists 1,991 cc, 306 hp, 400 Nm, 0–100 km/h in 4.9 seconds and a 250 km/h top speed for its specification. Those figures belong to that sheet and its market context, not the U.S. 302-hp listing; the available sources do not establish a like-for-like explanation for the difference. How does it drive?
Cars.com’s 2024 review describes acceleration as spirited and handling as agile—qualities that support the CLA 35’s appeal as a first AMG. That same review reports a punishing ride and low visibility. These are one publication’s test impressions, not universal owner findings, and the official hardware specifications alone cannot establish how comfortable or composed the car will feel on your roads.
The technical sheet lists AMG suspension with specific spring and damper elements, five AMG DYNAMIC SELECT programs, three-stage ESP and a high-performance brake setup. The front brakes use 350 mm discs and four-piston fixed calipers; the discs are described as perforated. These features document the equipment, but they do not remove the need to assess ride comfort, braking feel and sightlines in person.

Is the CLA 35 practical enough for everyday use?
Cars.com characterizes the rear seat as cramped or impractical and visibility as limited. If you regularly carry adults in back, use child seats, or need easy access and a clear view around the car, check the actual seating position and sightlines before buying. The review’s criticism is a useful prompt for your own evaluation, not a substitute for trying the car with the people and gear you expect to carry.
How much does the 2024 CLA 35 cost?
Prices depend on market and basis, so U.S. and UK figures should not be compared as equivalent amounts.

Cars.com also cites high price as a drawback. Whether the premium makes sense depends on your priorities and the specific market, trim and equipment being considered; the figures above are not a complete comparison with competing cars.

What engine oil does the 2024 CLA 35 require?
The 2024 Mercedes-AMG CLA Owner’s Manual lists MB-Approval 229.71 and MB-Approval 229.72 for CLA 35 4MATIC engine oil. Approval numbers are not a recommendation for a particular retail product or viscosity. Check the manual for your individual vehicle and the applicable service requirements before selecting oil. Is it a good first AMG?
The CLA 35 can make sense as a first AMG if your priorities are brisk acceleration, agile handling and the AMG-specific equipment in a compact four-door coupe body. It is a less convincing choice if ride comfort, rear-seat usefulness, clear visibility or value are decisive. The strongest answer is conditional: its performance hardware is substantial, but the reported comfort and practicality trade-offs are central to ownership, not minor footnotes.
