Every version has standard all-wheel drive and a six-speed automatic. For 2024, Mazda revised the dampers and electric power steering tuning, strengthened the front seat frame, and added wireless phone charging to select packages. The right trim depends chiefly on whether you want the lower-priced naturally aspirated engine or the stronger turbo, and which comfort and technology features matter to you.
What changed for 2024?
Mazda’s 2024 specification deck lists three notable changes: revised dampers and electric power steering (EPAS) tuning, a strengthened front seat frame, and wireless phone charging on the S Premium, S Premium Plus, and all Turbo models. Mazda calls the chassis update “Ride improvement (Damper, EPAS tuning)”; that is the manufacturer’s description, not an independent ride evaluation. Mazda’s 2024 CX-50 announcement and its 2024 specification deck document the changes.
The deck lists cargo volume of 31.4 cubic feet, compared with 30.9 cubic feet for 2023, and passenger volume of 100.3 cubic feet, compared with 98.3 cubic feet for the configurations listed. These are Mazda specifications, not independently measured results.
Which 2024 CX-50 trim should you choose?
The lineup has eight packages. The four 2.5 S trims share the naturally aspirated engine; the four Turbo trims use the turbocharged engine. Because AWD and the six-speed automatic are standard across the lineup, neither is a reason to step up to a higher package.

Choose the 2.5 S Select if you want the simplest route into the lineup and do not need the upgrades of higher packages. The Preferred is a practical step if heated front seats and a power liftgate are priorities. S Premium is the package to consider for its moonroof, Bose audio, and wireless charging; S Premium Plus adds front-seat ventilation and the head-up display.
Choose a Turbo if engine output or the higher published towing limit matters more than the 2.5 S fuel-economy estimate. Turbo Premium Plus is the most equipment-rich package described here, while Meridian is distinguished by its outdoor-themed hardware and styling rather than any established proof of superior trail capability. Mazda’s launch announcement lists starting MSRPs from $30,300 for the 2.5 S Select to $43,300 for the Turbo Premium Plus; those were historical launch prices announced July 18, 2023, not current used-car values.

What is the difference between the 2.5 S and Turbo?
Both engines pair with the six-speed automatic and standard i-Activ AWD, but the Turbo’s output depends on fuel grade. Mazda rates the naturally aspirated 2.5-liter engine at 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque. The turbocharged engine is rated at 227 horsepower and 310 lb-ft on 87-octane fuel, or 256 horsepower and 320 lb-ft on 93-octane fuel. The higher figure therefore requires premium 93-octane fuel.
Mi-Drive modes differ as well: 2.5 S models have Sport and Off-road modes, while Turbo models add Towing mode. Mazda’s published EPA estimates are 24 mpg city, 30 highway, and 27 combined for AWD 2.5 S models; Turbo estimates are 23 city, 29 highway, and 25 combined. These are EPA estimates in Mazda’s specification deck, not real-world test results.

How much can a 2024 CX-50 tow?
Mazda lists towing capacity of up to 2,000 pounds for 2.5 S models and up to 3,500 pounds for Turbo models when equipped with Mazda genuine towing accessories. The accessory condition is part of the rating. Confirm the vehicle’s configuration and Mazda’s requirements before towing; the figures do not validate the fitment or capacity of an arbitrary aftermarket hitch.
What safety and capability claims mean
Mazda lists standard driver-assistance features including Smart Brake Support with pedestrian detection, Blind Spot Monitoring, Driver Attention Alert, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keep Assist, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, and Radar Cruise Control with Stop & Go. Higher packages add equipment such as a 360-degree view monitor. A feature list is not an independent crash-test rating.

Mazda positions the CX-50 as combining on-road dynamics with off-road capability. The Meridian Edition’s all-terrain tires, 18-inch wheels, rocker garnish, and hood graphics support its outdoor-themed presentation, but the published materials do not establish comparative trail performance. Treat those details as equipment and styling information, not as a measured off-road advantage.
