Which one makes more sense depends on whether you value that equipment and Lexus positioning over the Land Cruiser’s lower launch price and hybrid setup.
What is the main difference between the 2024 GX and Land Cruiser?
They share a broad off-road, body-on-frame mission, but target different buyers. Lexus positions the GX as a luxury SUV with a dedicated Overtrail off-road variant. Toyota’s Land Cruiser pairs its own off-road identity with a lower announced starting price and a turbo-hybrid powertrain. The available comparisons support a tradeoff, not a universal winner.
Price: the Land Cruiser had the lower announced starting MSRP
Lexus announced a U.S. starting MSRP of $64,250 for the 2024 GX, including delivery, processing and handling, when it introduced the model in December 2023. Toyota’s launch announcement was reported as listing a $55,950 starting MSRP and a spring 2024 showroom arrival. That Toyota figure comes from a search-result excerpt of its announcement, rather than a page that could be fully reviewed. These are launch figures, not current transaction prices or used-market values, and they do not compare equivalent trims.
Powertrains: the GX has more output; the Land Cruiser is a hybrid
Lexus announced the GX 550 with a 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 rated at 349 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 10-speed automatic. Cars.com lists the U.S. 2024 Land Cruiser’s 2.4-liter turbo-hybrid powertrain at 326 hp and 465 lb-ft. On those published figures, the GX has the higher output; the Land Cruiser is the one with hybrid assistance.

The available sources do not provide an apples-to-apples independent fuel-economy comparison for these exact 2024 vehicles. Buyers weighing operating costs should compare official figures for the specific trim and configuration they are considering rather than infer economy from the powertrain labels alone.
Seating and cabin equipment
Lexus lists seating for up to seven in the GX Premium, Premium+, Luxury and Luxury+ grades. Overtrail and Overtrail+ are two-row models, so they trade the third row for their off-road-focused configuration. Lexus also announced a standard 14-inch multimedia touchscreen with Lexus Interface, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a 12.3-inch multi-information display.

Off-road hardware: Overtrail is the GX’s distinctive case
The GX uses Lexus’s GA-F platform, also used by the current-generation LX 600. Lexus describes a ladder frame, double-wishbone front suspension, multi-link rear suspension, standard full-time four-wheel drive and a Torsen limited-slip locking center differential. That is substantial standard hardware, but the Overtrail grades add the clearest distinction within the GX lineup:

Those features make Overtrail and Overtrail+ the GX grades to consider if their equipment matches your terrain and use. They are two-row vehicles, unlike the GX’s other grades. Lexus’s description explains the system’s intended function; it is not a controlled comparison showing that the GX outperforms the Land Cruiser off-road.
Towing: one comparison favored the tested GX, not every GX
Cars.com’s towing comparison reported maximum as-tested figures of 9,063 pounds for its 2024 Lexus GX 550 Overtrail+ and 6,000 pounds for its 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser First Edition. Those figures describe the specific test vehicles and configurations in that comparison. They should not be treated as ratings for every GX or Land Cruiser trim, or as a like-for-like result across all configurations. Check the rating for the exact vehicle, and account for the trailer and load before towing.

Ride comfort, fuel economy and availability need trim-specific answers
Cars.com’s GX review describes a press drive in Arizona’s Sonoran Desert, including the Overtrail’s equipment and styling. That is a reviewer’s experience with the GX, not a controlled ride or handling test against the Land Cruiser. The available reporting also does not settle comparative fuel economy, on-road comfort, or current availability. These are useful areas to evaluate in back-to-back drives and by checking current local inventory; launch announcements cannot establish what is available now.
