The 2024 Lexus GX is an all-new generation, not a refresh of the 2023 GX. It replaces the GX 460’s naturally aspirated V8 and six-speed automatic with the GX 550’s twin-turbo V6 and 10-speed automatic, while adding more torque, higher published towing ratings, a redesigned cabin and new Overtrail grades. Specifications and historical pricing above come from Lexus materials: the 2023 GX brochure, Lexus’s 2023 GX 460 announcement, and the 2024 GX launch announcement. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results.
Is the 2024 GX a redesign?
Yes. Lexus describes the 2024 GX as redesigned from the ground up and introduces the GX 550 name in the U.S., replacing the previous GX 460. The 2023 and 2024 models therefore belong to different generations. The new GX uses Lexus’s GA-F ladder-frame platform, in the same platform family as the LX 600. Lexus describes a double-wishbone front suspension, multi-link rear suspension and available Adaptive Variable Suspension; those are design and equipment descriptions, not independent handling evaluations.
How different are the engines and transmissions?
The 2023 GX 460 pairs a 4.6-liter V8 with a six-speed automatic. Lexus lists 301 horsepower and 329 lb-ft of torque. The 2024 GX 550 changes to a 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 and a 10-speed Direct Shift automatic, rated at 349 horsepower and 479 lb-ft. On those published ratings, the newer model adds 48 horsepower and 150 lb-ft of torque.

The engine change is consequential for shoppers: the 2024 does not have a V8. Instead, Lexus’s listed figures show substantially more torque from the turbocharged V6. The 2023 brochure also lists EPA-estimated fuel economy of 15 mpg city, 19 mpg highway and 16 mpg combined for the GX 460. Those are historical U.S. model-year estimates; real-world economy varies with use and condition.
How much more can the 2024 GX tow?
Lexus’s 2023 brochure lists the GX 460 at up to 6,500 pounds. In its December 2023 launch release, Lexus lists the 2024 GX at up to 9,063 pounds for Premium and Premium+ and up to 9,096 pounds for Overtrail, with the standard tow hitch. Compare the rating for the exact grade and hitch configuration rather than treating one figure as universal across the lineup.

Lexus’s earlier June 2023 announcement gave preliminary 2024 towing figures of up to 8,000 pounds for Premium, Premium+ and Overtrail. The later launch release states the grade-specific figures above; it is the more complete final published rating in the cited material.
What is new about the Overtrail grades?
Overtrail and Overtrail+ are new, off-road-focused additions to the 2024 lineup. Lexus lists standard 33-inch all-terrain tires and 18-inch wheels for these grades, and its initial redesign announcement describes an electronic locking rear differential for Overtrail. These are meaningful hardware and equipment differences from the 2023 GX 460 lineup, not just a new badge.

A 33-inch tire diameter by itself does not establish that any particular replacement tire will fit. Check the complete tire specification, wheel, load rating and specific vehicle configuration before buying tires or assuming fitment.
How have the design, cabin and technology changed?
Lexus presents the 2024 exterior with a squarer, more horizontal design, a longer wheelbase and a wider body than the preceding generation. It also introduces a power rear lift door with a pop-out window as standard equipment, which Lexus describes as a first for the GX. Dimensions and equipment can vary by grade and configuration.

The 2024 cabin replaces the 2023 GX’s 10.3-inch multimedia touchscreen with a standard 14-inch display and Lexus Interface. Lexus also lists wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 12.3-inch multi-information display and Lexus Safety System+ 3.0 for the 2024. The 2023 materials describe Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Amazon Alexa with the 10.3-inch multimedia system. Connected services and equipment may depend on configuration or continued service availability.

The key choice is whether the buyer wants the more comfort- and equipment-oriented grades or the Overtrail hardware. The 2023 comparison vehicle is the GX 460 rather than a GX 550 trim, so grade names and equipment packages do not map directly from one year to the other.
What did the 2024 GX cost at launch?
Lexus announced a U.S. starting MSRP of $64,250 for the 2024 GX at launch, including delivery, processing and handling. That is a historical launch price, not a current dealer quote. The cited 2023 official materials do not establish a verifiable U.S. base MSRP on a matching basis, so they do not support a reliable year-over-year price increase. Current used-vehicle prices also depend on market, mileage, condition and equipment.
Which model makes more sense to shop?
- Consider the 2023 GX 460 if you specifically want its naturally aspirated V8 or are comparing used examples where condition, mileage and actual asking price matter more than the new model’s equipment.
- Consider the 2024 GX 550 if you want the redesigned cabin and technology, the higher published power and torque ratings, or the new Overtrail off-road equipment.
- For towing, compare the exact 2024 grade and standard tow-hitch configuration against the 2023’s published 6,500-pound maximum, then verify the particular vehicle’s documentation.
- For a real purchase comparison, check each vehicle’s grade, seating arrangement, equipment, mileage and condition, and compare out-the-door prices in your market.
