What the 2024 EV9 gets right—and where it asks for compromise
The EV9’s standout achievement is fitting three rows into an all-electric SUV without making the rearmost seats merely an emergency option. Kia describes it as its first three-row electric SUV, and the configuration accommodates six or seven passengers depending on the second-row seating. Car and Driver says adults can fit in the third row, though doing so requires second-row occupants to surrender some legroom.
That makes the EV9 a credible choice for families who need occasional or regular third-row seating and want an electric vehicle. It is not a promise that all three rows will feel equally spacious, or that a full passenger load leaves generous space for luggage.
How much range does a 2024 Kia EV9 get?
EPA-estimated range depends on trim and drivetrain. Car and Driver lists these figures for the 2024 model:

These are EPA estimates, not guaranteed distances. Speed, temperature, terrain, passenger and cargo load, and other conditions affect real-world range. The Long Range RWD Light has the highest listed estimate; the AWD versions trade some range for all-wheel drive.
How highway tests compare
Independent tests show why it is useful to separate EPA estimates from a particular trip or test result. Car and Driver recorded 240 miles in its 75-mph highway test of a GT-Line rated at 270 miles by the EPA. In a different standardized test reported by the Associated Press, Edmunds recorded 306 miles for an EV9 also rated at 270 miles. Those results come from separate tests and should not be treated as a single expected range or as directly comparable measurements.

How fast does the EV9 charge?
Kia lists a 10.9 kW onboard AC charger and DC fast-charging capability of up to 230 kW. The AC figure describes the vehicle’s onboard charging equipment; the DC figure is a maximum capability, not a promise that a public charger will deliver that power throughout a session. Actual charging time depends on the charging equipment, the vehicle’s state of charge, battery conditions, and other factors. Kia’s specifications establish capability, but do not by themselves determine how long a particular everyday charging stop will take.
Can adults sit in the third row, and how much cargo fits?
Car and Driver describes the third row as usable for adults, with a condition: second-row passengers must give up some legroom to make the space work. That flexibility is useful when the EV9 needs to carry more people, but the seating arrangement involves a real space trade-off rather than three equally generous rows.

Car and Driver lists 20 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row and up to 82 cubic feet with the second and third rows folded. The smaller figure is the relevant one when all three rows are occupied; the larger maximum requires folding both rear rows and therefore giving up those seats.
Which EV9 trim makes sense?
For shoppers choosing among 2024 trims, the clearest distinctions supported by the available specifications are range and drivetrain. The Light Long Range RWD leads on EPA-estimated range, while Wind, Land, and GT-Line are AWD and have lower listed estimates. The Light RWD has the lowest listed range. Seating configuration also matters: Kia’s specifications identify six- and seven-passenger layouts, with the passenger count depending on second-row configuration.

Kia’s January 17, 2024 announcement described four trim levels spanning two battery sizes and RWD or dual-motor AWD. It also cited up to 379 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque, and a 0-to-60-mph time of 4.5 seconds with a one-foot rollout for the GT-Line. Those performance figures are Kia’s manufacturer claims, not independent test results. Prices announced for the model at launch are historical and should not be treated as current used-market values.

For a used example, verify the exact trim, drivetrain, seating layout, and vehicle history rather than assuming every EV9 has the same range or cabin configuration. Build date is also relevant to the IIHS headlight evaluation: the institute says updated ratings apply to Land and GT-Line vehicles built after January 2024, while earlier builds received a poor headlight rating. IIHS lists good evaluations in multiple crash tests and crash-prevention assessments; consult its vehicle-specific results for the full scope rather than treating one rating as a blanket safety verdict.
