The 2021 Nissan GT-R has the hardware to make its “Godzilla” reputation understandable: a hand-assembled twin-turbo V6, a six-speed dual-clutch transmission and Nissan’s ATTESA E-TS all-wheel-drive system. But “still dominates” goes further than the available evidence supports. Its specifications show a formidable, focused sports car—not proof that it beats every newer rival. The choice between Premium and NISMO is also stark: the NISMO adds track-oriented hardware, but its original U.S. starting price was nearly twice the Premium’s.
What makes the 2021 GT-R compelling?
Nissan offered two U.S. versions for 2021: GT-R Premium and GT-R NISMO. Both use a hand-assembled 3.8-liter twin-turbo VR38DETT V6 and a six-speed dual-clutch transmission, with power delivered through the ATTESA E-TS all-wheel-drive system. Nissan’s published output figures are 565 hp and 467 lb-ft for Premium, and 600 hp and 481 lb-ft for NISMO. These are manufacturer ratings, not independent dyno results.
The combination is the core of the GT-R’s appeal: substantial turbocharged output paired with a dual-clutch gearbox and an AWD system. Those specifications explain why the car can still look serious on paper, even as its underlying platform has aged. They do not establish a current class ranking or prove superiority over newer sports cars.
Premium or NISMO: what does the extra money buy?

Both listed starting prices are historical U.S. launch MSRPs announced August 26, 2020, before the $1,695 destination and handling charge. They are not estimates of current used-car values. Nissan’s stated difference is not just a badge or a power increase: NISMO adds specific materials and braking hardware and is oriented more strongly toward track use. Whether that package justifies the original price premium depends on how much the buyer values those changes; the output figures alone cannot settle that question.

What should a buyer know about the Premium’s equipment?
Nissan’s official brochure specifies Dunlop SP Sport MAXX GT600 DSST CTT high-performance run-flat tires for the Premium. The car’s tire needs are not a one-size-fits-all shopping choice: replacement fitment depends on the individual vehicle’s trim, wheels and tire setup, as well as what is currently available. Check the vehicle’s door placard and qualified fitment data before buying replacement tires.
For 2021, Nissan expanded availability of Bayside Blue on Premium. The press kit also lists an All Weather Package and Premium Interior Package as Premium options; availability and configuration should be confirmed for the specific car being considered.

Does the 2021 GT-R still dominate newer sports cars?
That claim cannot be verified from the GT-R’s manufacturer specifications alone. No current independent, like-for-like comparison establishes that the 2021 model beats every newer rival, and the figures here do not provide comparable acceleration times, lap times, reliability data or ownership costs. A fair verdict against any specific competitor would require comparable independent testing, current transaction prices and relevant ownership information.
The narrower case is more defensible: the GT-R remains an unusually purposeful package of turbocharged power, dual-clutch shifting and all-wheel drive, with a sharper and more hardware-intensive NISMO option. Its age and the original NISMO price make the value question real, but the launch prices should not be confused with today’s market. A prospective used buyer should assess the actual car and its current asking price rather than treating the 2021 MSRP as a valuation.
