The 2024 Kawasaki Ninja 500 is not a ground-up replacement for the Ninja 400. It is an evolution of the same lightweight sportbike formula, with a longer-stroke engine, revised styling, updated instruments and a modest increase in weight.
For U.S. buyers, the comparison is between the 2024 Ninja 500 and the 2023 Ninja 400, since Kawasaki replaced the 400 with the 500 for the 2024 model year. The biggest functional difference is the engine: the Ninja 500 makes more torque and feels stronger through the middle of the rev range, while the Ninja 400 remains very similar in size, chassis layout and riding position.

Kawasaki kept the 70.0mm bore but increased stroke from 51.8mm to 58.6mm. That 6.8mm increase accounts for most of the displacement gain. Kawasaki also revised the crankshaft, connecting rods, pistons, balancer shaft, flywheel and airbox configuration.
On Kawasaki’s technical-review comparison, the 500 produces 38.3kW and 42.6Nm, versus 35.0kW and 37.0Nm for the 400. That works out to approximately 9.4% more power and 15.1% more torque in the comparison data.
The extra torque is the more important everyday difference. The Ninja 500 should require fewer downshifts when accelerating onto a highway, passing traffic or climbing a hill. It still has the rev-happy character expected from a small parallel twin, but it does not need to be worked quite as hard as the Ninja 400.

The U.S. Ninja 400 sheet does not publish maximum horsepower or torque, so widely quoted 400 output figures should not be presented as U.S.-spec Kawasaki claims.
Both motorcycles already have an assist-and-slipper clutch
The Ninja 500 uses an Assist & Slipper clutch, but this is not a new feature compared with the Ninja 400. The 2023 Ninja 400 also had one.

- [ARMORED HOODIE FOR REAL STREET RIDING] Milwaukee Leather Streetguard is built for riders who want casual hoodie comfort without giving up motorcycle-ready protection. The outer shell is made from a durable 90% premium cotton denim blend and reinforced with aramid fibers in key abrasion and impact zones, giving it a tougher ride-focused build for commuting, city miles, short trips, and everyday wear where a basic sweatshirt falls short.
- [CE SHOULDER AND ELBOW ARMOR INCLUDED] Removable CE armor at the shoulders and elbows adds targeted impact protection in critical areas while keeping the hoodie more flexible and easier to wear than a heavy traditional jacket. It is designed to move more naturally with the rider, helping maintain comfort and mobility for daily riding, stop-and-go traffic, and regular use on and off the bike.
- [COMFORTABLE FIT WITH RIDER-FRIENDLY FEEL] A soft mesh interior liner helps improve airflow and overall comfort during longer wear, while elastic cuffs and waistband help keep the fit secure and reduce loose movement when riding. The result is a motorcycle hoodie that feels easier to wear through changing conditions and daily use without the stiff, overbuilt feel some protective gear can have.
- [BACK PROTECTOR POCKET FOR ADDED COVERAGE] Streetguard includes an internal pocket that accepts optional Milwaukee Leather back protector insert MP7904, sold separately, so riders can add more coverage when they want a more built-out setup. That gives you the flexibility to keep the hoodie lighter for everyday use or upgrade your protection package for longer rides and more demanding conditions.
- [FUNCTIONAL STORAGE ON AND OFF THE BIKE] Built for more than looks, this riding hoodie features 2 outside hand pockets, an inside electronic media pocket with wire feed access, an inside drop pocket, an adjustable hood, and a built-in hanging loop. It is designed to handle everyday essentials while giving riders a practical, protective layer that works just as well off the bike as it does in the saddle.
The system reduces clutch-lever effort during normal riding and helps limit rear-wheel hop during aggressive downshifts. Kawasaki revised clutch-related components for the larger engine, but describing the Ninja 500 as the first of the two to receive a slipper clutch is incorrect.
Chassis and dimensions are almost unchanged
The Ninja 500 retains the Ninja 400’s basic high-tensile-steel trellis-frame concept, conventional 41mm telescopic fork and horizontal back-link rear suspension. Both motorcycles have preload-adjustable rear shocks.

Seat height remains exactly the same at 30.9 inches, so the newer bike is not a taller replacement for shorter riders. Fuel capacity also remains 3.7 gallons.
The Ninja 500 is heavier. Compared with ABS-equipped versions, the difference is roughly 9 to 11 pounds, depending on the exact 50-state configuration. That is noticeable when moving the motorcycle around a garage, but it is not a major change once riding.
Suspension travel and tire sizes are also effectively carried over:

- 41mm front fork with 4.7 inches of travel
- Horizontal back-link rear suspension with 5.1 inches of travel
- 110/70-17 front tire
- 150/60-17 rear tire
The 150/60-17 rear tire is not exclusive to the Ninja 500; it was also listed for the U.S.-spec 2023 Ninja 400. Claims that the 500 alone gained a wider rear tire are generally based on outdated or market-specific information.
Styling and lighting are obvious visual differences
The Ninja 500 receives new bodywork with a larger-volume fairing and styling closer to Kawasaki’s newer Ninja family. Its compact LED headlights and LED taillight make the front and rear ends look more modern than the Ninja 400’s arrangement.
Kawasaki also revised the seat shape and made small changes to the riding position. These changes do not transform the ergonomics, however. The unchanged seat height and closely related chassis mean that riders familiar with the Ninja 400 should find the Ninja 500 immediately recognizable.
The standard Ninja 500 gets connected LCD instruments
Electronic equipment is another meaningful upgrade. The standard 2024 Ninja 500 uses a high-contrast full LCD instrument panel with Bluetooth connectivity through Kawasaki’s RIDEOLOGY THE APP.
Depending on the function supported, the display can show gear position, fuel level, estimated remaining range, current and average fuel consumption, coolant temperature, clock, service information and notifications.

The 2023 U.S. Ninja 400 used a conventional LCD cluster and did not list the Ninja 500’s smartphone-connectivity package. This gives the 500 a more current ownership experience even though its underlying chassis remains familiar.
Do all Ninja 500 models have ABS and a TFT display?
No. The U.S. 2024 lineup included both non-ABS and ABS versions. ABS was not standard on every Ninja 500.
The standard Ninja 500 uses LCD instrumentation. The full-color TFT display belongs to the higher-grade Ninja 500 SE ABS, so the statement that “the Ninja 500 has a TFT dash” needs to specify the SE model.
What the Ninja 500 SE ABS adds
- Full-color TFT instrument display
- KIPASS proximity key system
- USB-C outlet
- Larger clear windshield
- LED rear turn signals
- Pillion-seat cover
- Frame sliders
- Tank pad and knee pads
- Radiator screen
The SE is therefore more than a color or graphics package. It adds convenience and protective equipment, but it also costs substantially more than the standard motorcycle.

Which one should you buy?
Choose the Ninja 500 if you want the newer model, stronger midrange torque, updated styling, connected instruments or access to the well-equipped SE ABS version. It is also the natural choice for riders buying new from Kawasaki, since the 400 was replaced in the U.S. lineup.
Choose a Ninja 400 if you find a clean used example at a meaningful discount. Its compact dimensions, 30.9-inch seat, capable chassis and assist-and-slipper clutch remain relevant. The 400 is not made obsolete by the 500; it simply gives up some acceleration and modern equipment.
For a used-bike shopper, condition and service history should outweigh the badge. A well-maintained Ninja 400 with good tires and documented maintenance can be a better purchase than a neglected Ninja 500.

FAQ
Is the 2024 Kawasaki Ninja 500 much faster than the Ninja 400?
It is stronger rather than radically faster. Kawasaki’s comparison data shows approximately 9.4% more power and 15.1% more torque, with the largest practical benefit in low- and midrange acceleration.
Is the Ninja 500 actually 500cc?
No. The 2024 Ninja 500 uses a 451cc liquid-cooled parallel-twin engine. Its displacement comes mainly from a longer 58.6mm stroke, while the bore remains 70.0mm.
Is the Ninja 500 taller or heavier than the Ninja 400?
The seat height is unchanged at 30.9 inches. The Ninja 500 is heavier by roughly 9 to 11 pounds when comparable ABS models are compared.
Should you buy a Ninja 500 instead of a used Ninja 400?
Buy the 500 for its stronger engine, newer styling, connected LCD display and available SE equipment. A clean Ninja 400 can be the better value if its price is substantially lower and its maintenance history is strong.
The Bottom Line
The 2024 Kawasaki Ninja 500 is a revised Ninja 400 platform, not a completely new motorcycle. Its 451cc longer-stroke engine delivers more useful torque, while new bodywork and connected instrumentation make it feel newer. The chassis dimensions, seat height, suspension layout and tire sizes remain closely related. For new buyers, the Ninja 500 is the more capable and current choice; for used-bike shoppers, a discounted, well-maintained Ninja 400 still makes a strong case.
