It is a 451cc parallel-twin sportbike that keeps the Ninja 400’s compact chassis while adding useful midrange torque, updated styling, and a more varied equipment list.
That combination makes it one of the more approachable motorcycles for everyday riding. It is light, unintimidating, easy to turn, and quick enough to remain entertaining after a new rider gains confidence. The compromises are equally clear: basic suspension hardware, merely adequate brakes, limited wind protection on standard models, and a recall that buyers of some used examples must verify.

What changed from the Ninja 400?
Kawasaki retained the Ninja 400’s fundamental platform for 2024. The frame, wheelbase, suspension layout, brakes, wheels, and overall dimensions are familiar. The important mechanical change is inside the engine.
The bore remains 70.0mm, but the stroke grows from 51.8mm to 58.6mm. That increases displacement from 399cc to 451cc. Kawasaki claims 51.0 horsepower at 10,000 rpm and 31.7 lb-ft of torque at 7,500 rpm. Those are manufacturer figures, not rear-wheel dynamometer results.

The extra displacement is most noticeable away from the top of the rev range. The Ninja 500 pulls more cleanly through the middle of the revs and needs fewer downshifts when accelerating out of a corner or passing on the road. It remains smooth and manageable rather than suddenly becoming an intimidating performance motorcycle.
There is one specification change that some Ninja 400 owners may regard as a disadvantage: the 500’s rev limit is approximately 11,700 rpm, compared with roughly 13,000 rpm for the 400. The newer bike gains torque and flexibility, but it does not deliver the same high-rpm character.
Engine and road performance
The liquid-cooled, DOHC, eight-valve parallel twin has the kind of power delivery that suits a broad range of riders. Throttle response is predictable, the clutch pull is light, and the assist-and-slipper clutch reduces effort during aggressive downshifts. It is friendly in traffic but still rewards the rider who carries speed through corners.

On a winding road, the Ninja 500’s performance is less about outright acceleration and more about how easily its available power can be used. You can work the six-speed gearbox, keep the engine in its useful range, and concentrate on corner entry and exit without constantly managing excessive speed.
That does not make it a highway specialist. The engine has enough performance for normal freeway use, but overtakes and steep inclines require more planning than they would on a larger sportbike. Wind exposure also becomes important, particularly on the standard model.

Handling, suspension, and brakes
The Ninja 500 remains agile because Kawasaki did not turn it into a physically larger motorcycle. Its 54.1-inch wheelbase, narrow front tire, compact dimensions, and relatively low weight make low-speed maneuvering easy. Direction changes require little effort, and tight corners do not feel like a contest with the motorcycle.
The 41mm telescopic fork provides 4.7 inches of travel and has no adjustment. At the rear, Kawasaki uses a horizontal back-link system with 5.1 inches of travel and spring-preload adjustment. That is enough to accommodate a change in load, but it is not a fully adjustable sportbike suspension package.

It also remained composed over mid-corner bumps. Heavier riders or owners who ride aggressively may eventually want more control over damping and spring rates, but the standard setup is well matched to normal street riding.
Braking hardware is similarly practical rather than premium: a 310mm semi-floating front disc with a two-piston caliper and a 220mm rear disc with a single-piston caliper. The brakes are adequate for commuting and spirited road riding, although they lack the sharp initial bite and high-end feel of more expensive machinery.
Ergonomics and wind protection
The Ninja looks committed to the sportbike role, but the riding position is comparatively upright. The 30.9-inch seat height is accessible to many newer riders, and the compact chassis is easy to support at stops. The revised seat shape also reduces the tendency to slide forward into the fuel tank.

- High Quality: The helmet shell is made of carbon fiber material, which is stronger and safer, and has a high-density EPS buffer layer. After a professional crash test, it perfectly better withstand pressure.
- DOT Approved: DOT Safety Standards. Carbon fiber Shell with Aerodynamic Design prevents buffeting and lifting. High density fully vents EPS liner to greatly absorb impact.
- Lightweight: Carbon fiber ultra-light helmet shell, only weighs about 1150g, mesh inner lining is comfortable, breathable and not stuffy, which can better reduce the stress fatigue of long-distance motorcycles or urban cyclists
- Comfy Wearing: Comfortable riding experience, adequate ventilation and fresh air during hot weather, liner with thick foam for softness and comfort.
- More Suitable: suitable for motorcycle, biker, scooter, skateboarding, cycling, pilot, touring helmet, Suitable for adults, teenagers, men and women.
Tall riders should sit on one before buying. A tester measuring 6 feet 2 inches found the motorcycle usable, but the legroom can feel tight for taller owners over longer rides. The same compact proportions that help a shorter or newer rider can make the cockpit feel cramped.

The standard windshield offers limited torso protection. The SE’s larger windshield is a meaningful improvement, particularly on the highway. It will not turn the Ninja into a touring motorcycle, but it reduces the amount of wind hitting the rider’s body.
2024 Ninja 500 trims explained
The equipment differences matter more than the paintwork suggests. The 2024 U.S. lineup included non-ABS, ABS, SE ABS, and special-edition versions.
| Version | Original U.S. MSRP | Notable equipment |
|---|---|---|
| Ninja 500 | $5,299 | LCD display; ABS optional by version |
| KRT Edition | $5,499 | Kawasaki Racing Team graphics; available without ABS |
| Ninja 500 ABS | $5,699–$5,899 | ABS and LCD display |
| Ninja 500 SE ABS | $6,399 | TFT display, KIPASS, USB-C, larger windshield, protection accessories |
| KRT Edition SE ABS | $6,399 | SE equipment with KRT graphics |
| SE 40th Anniversary Edition ABS | $6,599 | SE equipment with anniversary color scheme |
Those prices excluded destination, dealer charges, tax, title, registration, and other transaction costs. The 40th Anniversary model is an SE ABS motorcycle, not simply a graphics package on the non-ABS version.
The base bikes use a two-color LCD instrument panel with smartphone connectivity through Kawasaki’s RIDEOLOGY THE APP. The SE receives a full-color TFT, KIPASS proximity ignition, a USB-C outlet, LED turn signals, a larger windshield, frame sliders, tank and knee protection pads, a radiator guard, and a pillion-seat cover.

Two common buying mistakes are assuming every Ninja 500 has ABS and assuming every one has a TFT screen. Neither is true. If safety equipment is a priority, confirm both the trim and the actual motorcycle’s equipment before agreeing to a price.

Used-buying warning: check the clutch-release-shaft recall
Some 2024 Ninja 500 motorcycles were included in NHTSA campaign 25V-146, announced in March 2025. The affected versions include the Ninja 500 ABS, KRT Edition, KRT Edition SE ABS, SE ABS, and SE 40th Anniversary Edition ABS. The filing identified 3,742 potentially affected motorcycles.
The clutch-release shaft may have been improperly welded. If it breaks, the clutch-release lever can come apart, making it difficult or impossible to disengage the clutch. Kawasaki’s remedy is replacement of the clutch-release shaft at no charge.
Before buying a used bike, use Kawasaki’s Owner Center → Recalls → Search by Vehicle VIN/HIN function. Enter the individual motorcycle’s VIN or HIN rather than relying on the model year, trim badge, or seller’s assurance. Confirm that any applicable repair has been completed.
What this review can—and cannot—establish
The published first-ride reports behind this assessment came from Kawasaki press events, including California and Malibu-area canyon-road testing. They are useful for judging ergonomics, handling, engine response, and equipment. They do not establish long-term reliability, fuel economy over thousands of miles, service costs, or ownership durability.

That limitation is important. The Ninja 500’s specification sheet and launch behavior make a strong case for it as an approachable street motorcycle, but a buyer should still inspect service records, cold-start behavior, chain and tire condition, crash damage, and recall status on a used example.
FAQ
Is the 2024 Kawasaki Ninja 500 actually a 500cc motorcycle?
No. Its engine displaces 451cc. Kawasaki uses “500” as the model name; the engine has a 70.0mm bore and 58.6mm stroke.
Does every 2024 Ninja 500 have ABS and a TFT display?
No. Non-ABS versions were sold in the United States, and regular models use a two-color LCD display. ABS and the full-color TFT are fitted to SE versions.

Is the 2024 Ninja 500 good for beginners?
Yes, for many riders. Its 30.9-inch seat, light and compact chassis, smooth power delivery, light clutch, and predictable handling make it approachable. A beginner should still receive proper training and use appropriate protective equipment.
What should I check before buying a used 2024 Ninja 500?
Check the VIN or HIN through Kawasaki’s Owner Center recall search, especially for campaign 25V-146. Also inspect service records, tires, chain, brakes, fork seals, bodywork, and evidence of a crash.
The Bottom Line
The 2024 Kawasaki Ninja 500 is a successful refinement rather than a revolution. Its 451cc twin supplies more useful midrange than the Ninja 400, while the familiar chassis keeps the motorcycle nimble, accessible, and easy to enjoy on ordinary roads. The SE is the more complete version thanks to its TFT, larger windshield, USB-C outlet, and protective equipment, but buyers should not confuse its added features with high-end suspension or braking hardware.
For a new rider, commuter, or experienced motorcyclist who values lightness over headline performance, the Ninja 500 is a compelling small sportbike. For a used-bike purchase, verify the exact trim, confirm whether ABS is fitted, and check the VIN or HIN for recall completion before handing over money.
