Model year is not always the calendar build year
A model year is the year used to designate a discrete vehicle model; it is not necessarily the year in which the vehicle was built or sold. Federal rules allow production for one model year to span up to 24 months. Therefore, a car built late in one calendar year can carry the following year’s model-year designation.
Use the model year shown on the vehicle’s title, registration, manufacturer label or official VIN lookup when a form asks for the year.

Where do trim, series and body style fit?
Trim
A trim is a more specific equipment and feature level within a model. Names such as Sport, Touring, LX or Limited are trim labels, although manufacturers do not use the terms identically.
Series
A series is a subdivision of a vehicle line used for distinctions such as price, size or weight. NHTSA examples include 3500, 4500 and 5500 series. On a heavy-duty truck, the series number can be important for capacity, suspension and replacement parts.

Body style
Body style describes the vehicle’s form, such as sedan, hatchback, coupe, SUV, van or pickup. Two versions carrying the same model name can have different body styles and specifications.
What is a VIN, and is it the make or model?
A vehicle identification number (VIN) is an alphanumeric identifier assigned to one motor vehicle. It helps identify a particular vehicle, but it is not the vehicle’s make or model name.
Do not enter a VIN in the make or model fields unless a form specifically asks for it. Use the VIN when an insurer, regulator, dealer or parts supplier needs to verify the exact vehicle, production details or recall status.
Common mistakes when identifying a car
- Calling the badge the model: The manufacturer badge usually indicates the make; the nameplate identifies the model.
- Using the purchase year: The year you bought the car may differ from its model year.
- Stopping at the model name: Different trims, engines and body styles can require different parts.
- Substituting the VIN: A VIN identifies the individual vehicle and belongs in a separate field.
- Ignoring a series number: Series such as 3500 or 4500 can distinguish materially different truck configurations.
How to identify your car accurately
- Check the title or registration for the model year, make and model.
- Read the manufacturer certification label, commonly found on the driver-side doorjamb, for model-year and vehicle information.
- Check the owner’s manual or purchase documents for the exact nameplate and trim.
- Use the VIN when an exact configuration or individual-vehicle check is required.
- Confirm body style, engine, drivetrain and series before ordering parts.
How make and model help when comparing vehicles
Make is the brand-level comparison: for example, Toyota versus Ford. Model is the nameplate-level comparison: for example, Camry versus Accord. A useful vehicle comparison should also specify:
Quick Recap
- Model year
- Body style
- Powertrain and engine
- Passenger and cargo capacity
