The U.S.-market 2024 Honda Monkey is a retro-styled 124cc miniMOTO with a five-speed manual transmission, front-wheel ABS, a 30.5-inch seat, 12-inch wheels, and an advertised 231-pound curb weight. Honda priced the single Monkey ABS model at $4,299 MSRP plus a $300 destination charge, making the pre-tax, pre-fee subtotal $4,599. It is best suited to urban streets, neighborhood commuting, and short recreational rides—not regular freeway travel, passenger duty, or long-distance touring.
In 2026, the 2024 model is no longer current. It should be evaluated as a used motorcycle or leftover previous-model-year unit, with its price compared against the current 2026 Honda Monkey.

The Monkey is not a scooter. It has a conventional motorcycle layout, a hand clutch, and a one-down, four-up shift pattern. Its small size makes it approachable and easy to park, but it still requires motorcycle-specific control, licensing, and riding judgment.
What is the 2024 Honda Monkey?
The Honda Monkey is Honda’s retro miniMOTO: a compact motorcycle styled around the playful, small-bike format that made the original Monkey famous. The 2024 version combines that appearance with modern equipment, including fuel injection, a five-speed gearbox, hydraulic disc brakes, front-wheel anti-lock braking, LED lighting, and a digital instrument cluster.

Its upright, high-handlebar riding position and low seat make it physically accessible to many new riders. The 124cc engine is modest rather than intimidating, but the Monkey is still a manual motorcycle. The rider must coordinate the clutch, throttle, and gear lever, unlike the clutch-free Dax 125, Trail125, and Super Cub C125.
Honda’s brochure places the Monkey in the same general miniMOTO family as the Grom and describes an engine relationship between the models. That does not mean the motorcycles have identical gearing, chassis tuning, ergonomics, or performance.
What changed for 2024?
The U.S. 2024 Monkey was offered as one Monkey ABS trim. The available colors were Pearl Nebula Red and Pearl Black. Banana Yellow belonged to the 2023 color lineup and should not be listed as a 2024 U.S. color. Honda’s 2024 brochure and specification materials do not identify a major engine or chassis redesign for this model year.
One specification detail deserves caution: Honda’s 2024 materials list 4.3 inches of front-fork travel, while the 2023 brochure lists 3.9 inches. That difference should not automatically be described as a major mechanical redesign; it may reflect model-year documentation or specification changes that Honda does not explain in the cited material.
2024 Honda Monkey price and availability
Honda’s 2024 build-and-price information listed the Monkey ABS at:
- Base MSRP: $4,299
- Destination charge: $300
- MSRP plus destination: $4,599
The $4,599 figure is not an out-the-door price. Taxes, title, registration, motorcycle licensing costs, dealer documentation fees, assembly or setup charges, freight surcharges, dealer-installed accessories, and any market adjustment can add to the final bill. Honda also states that dealer prices may vary and that MSRP excludes tax, license, registration, destination, and dealer-installed options. Request an itemized quote rather than comparing only advertised MSRP.
As of August 10, 2026, Honda lists the current 2026 Monkey at $4,399 MSRP plus a $300 destination charge. That is only $100 more than the 2024 model’s original MSRP before considering taxes and fees. A leftover 2024 should therefore have a meaningful price advantage unless its availability, condition, or equipment justifies paying nearly current-model money.
Used 2024 Monkey values
As a broad reference rather than a guaranteed selling price, JD Power’s current valuation page lists a $4,299 suggested list price, a $2,900 low retail value, and a $3,815 average retail value for a 2024 Honda Monkey. Actual transactions depend on mileage, condition, service history, modifications, title status, region, season, and whether the seller is a private party or dealer. See the JD Power valuation page for the current reference figures.

Why do Honda’s weight figures differ?
Honda’s brochure and specification sheet list a 231-pound curb weight. The 2024 owner’s manual lists 229 pounds in its main-components specification section, while separately listing 231 pounds as the motorcycle’s maximum weight capacity.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Honda’s own documents therefore disagree by 2 pounds. The 231-pound figure is the commonly published model specification, but the discrepancy should be disclosed rather than silently reconciled. More importantly, the manual’s 231-pound maximum includes the rider, luggage, and accessories. It is not a 231-pound cargo allowance. Because the published curb weight and maximum capacity are so close, heavier riders should discuss the limit with a Honda dealer and avoid assuming that substantial luggage or a passenger is acceptable.

Engine, transmission, and real-world performance
The Monkey uses a 124cc air-cooled, fuel-injected single-cylinder engine with a 10.0:1 compression ratio, SOHC valve train, and two valves per cylinder. Honda’s PGM-FI system uses a 24mm throttle body. Final drive is by a #420 chain with 14-tooth and 37-tooth sprockets.
The five-speed manual transmission gives the rider more gear choices than the four-speed semi-automatic transmission in the Dax 125, Trail125, and Super Cub C125. The clutch and gearbox also provide conventional motorcycle practice for a new rider.
Honda’s U.S. 2024 materials do not publish official horsepower, torque, or factory top-speed figures. A precise horsepower or top-speed number found elsewhere should be identified as an independent test or dyno result, not presented as Honda factory data. Actual speed depends heavily on rider weight, wind, elevation, road grade, tire pressure, gearing, and speedometer accuracy.

In practical terms, the Monkey is strongest in town and on slower secondary roads. Its low-output engine is easy to manage, but its limited power reserve can make fast traffic stressful, particularly for a heavier or taller rider, on hills, or into a strong headwind. It is not a sensible choice for sustained 55–70 mph freeway travel even where local law permits that use.
Features and standard equipment
Front-wheel ABS, not dual-channel ABS
ABS is standard, but it works on the front wheel only. The rear wheel has no ABS function, so the 2024 Monkey should not be described as having dual-channel ABS or ABS on both wheels.
Honda’s owner’s manual says the ABS does not operate below approximately 6 mph (10 km/h), and ABS does not necessarily shorten stopping distance. In some conditions it can result in a longer stopping distance. It is a helpful braking aid, not a substitute for appropriate speed, tire grip, or proper braking technique.
During startup, the ABS indicator should illuminate as part of the system check and then go out after the motorcycle exceeds approximately 6 mph. If it remains illuminated while riding, Honda says the conventional brakes still operate, but the anti-lock function is unavailable. That behavior is an important inspection point on a used motorcycle.
Suspension, brakes, and wheels
The front suspension is a 31mm inverted fork with 4.3 inches of travel. Twin rear shocks provide 4.0 inches of travel. Hydraulic disc brakes measure 220mm at the front and 190mm at the rear.
The 12-inch cast wheels use relatively wide, high-sidewall tires: 120/80-12 at the front and 130/80-12 at the rear. Those tires suit the Monkey’s compact street-motorcycle mission, but the short wheelbase and small wheels can feel more reactive when crossing potholes, grooves, railroad tracks, and broken pavement. Slow down and cross such hazards as squarely as conditions allow.
Lighting, display, and convenience equipment
- Round chrome LED headlight.
- LED taillight, position light, and license-plate light.
- Digital instrument cluster with speedometer, odometer, trip meters, fuel gauge, and high-beam indicator.
- High-rise handlebar for an upright riding position.
- Side-stand engine interlock that shuts the engine off if the motorcycle is put in gear with the side stand down.
- Helmet holder, tool kit, and document storage.
Honda’s Monkey feature page also lists accessories such as a rear carrier and USB-C charger kit. These are not standard equipment on the 2024 motorcycle. Availability, pricing, installation, and compatibility with a particular model year should be confirmed with Honda or a dealer.
Is the Monkey comfortable for adults?
The 30.5-inch seat is low for a motorcycle, and the high-rise handlebar creates an upright posture. The seat is broad and well padded for short rides, and the narrow chassis makes it easy to place a foot down or maneuver the bike in a parking area.
However, a low seat is not the same thing as roomy ergonomics. Taller riders should sit on the motorcycle before buying and check knee angle, hip position, handlebar reach, and whether the left ankle can shift comfortably. Honda does not publish a rider-height limit for the U.S. Monkey, so fit must be assessed individually.
The weight limit is equally important. Honda’s owner’s manual lists the motorcycle’s capacity as 231 pounds including the rider, luggage, and accessories, and passenger capacity as rider only. The large solo seat does not make the Monkey passenger-rated. Do not carry a passenger, and do not treat the 231-pound number as a cargo rating.

Is the 2024 Honda Monkey good for a beginner?
It can be an approachable first motorcycle, but it is not automatically the best beginner vehicle for every rider.
Why it works for some new riders
- The 30.5-inch seat helps many riders reach the ground.
- The compact chassis is easy to move around a garage or parking space.
- The advertised 231-pound curb weight is manageable for a motorcycle.
- The upright ergonomics provide good visibility in low-speed traffic.
- The engine has predictable, modest output.
- The five-speed gearbox teaches conventional clutch and gear control.
- Front ABS provides an additional safety aid in some braking situations.
What beginners need to understand
- It still requires clutch, throttle, gear, and braking coordination.
- Small wheels and the short wheelbase can react quickly to rough pavement.
- Its limited power reserve can be a liability around fast traffic.
- Front ABS does not control the rear brake and does not eliminate the need for proper technique.
- The rider must meet state motorcycle licensing and endorsement requirements.
Honda’s owner’s manual recommends formal motorcycle training and practice in a safe area, including for experienced riders who are becoming familiar with the motorcycle’s size and handling. A Motorcycle Safety Foundation course or equivalent state-approved training is a sensible starting point.
Can the Monkey carry a passenger?
No. Honda lists the 2024 Monkey’s passenger capacity as “Rider only.” The seat’s generous size is a styling and comfort feature, not approval for two-person operation.
The owner’s manual also lists a maximum weight capacity of 231 pounds including the rider, luggage, and accessories. A rider carrying a backpack, rack, tools, or other equipment must count that weight toward the total. Anyone near the limit should avoid adding luggage and should verify the limitation with an authorized Honda dealer.
Is the 2024 Monkey highway legal?
There is no nationwide yes-or-no answer. Licensing, minimum-displacement, freeway, and limited-access-road rules vary by state and sometimes by road.
Honda’s owner’s manual warns that motorcycles under 150cc may face highway-operation restrictions depending on state law. At 124cc, the Monkey may be barred from some freeways or other limited-access roads even if it can be registered and ridden legally on ordinary public streets.

Before buying, check your state’s:
- Motorcycle endorsement or license requirements.
- Minimum displacement rules for freeways and limited-access roads.
- Helmet and eye-protection laws.
- Required lighting, mirror, plate, and other equipment rules.
- Restrictions applying to the specific roads in your commute.
Legal permission is only part of the decision. The Monkey’s small engine and compact chassis are better suited to urban speeds and secondary roads than to sustained high-speed traffic, regardless of the local legal limit.
Fuel economy, tank size, and realistic range
Fuel-economy data for this model year is easy to misstate. Contemporary 2024 dealer listings reproducing Honda data commonly quote 169 mpg. Honda’s later 2025 and 2026 Monkey pages list 162.6 mpg. Honda’s accessible 2024 brochure emphasizes fuel efficiency but does not show an MPG figure in its brochure text.
Those numbers should not be mixed together. If quoting 169 mpg, identify it as a historical 2024 Honda-associated listing rather than a universal real-world result. Honda’s mileage disclaimer notes that actual economy varies with riding style, maintenance, weather, road conditions, tire pressure, accessories, cargo, and rider weight.
Honda lists a 1.5-gallon tank including a 0.5-gallon reserve; the owner’s manual gives 1.48 U.S. gallons, or 5.6 liters. Multiplying 1.5 gallons by the historical 169-mpg figure produces a theoretical range of about 253 miles, but that is not a guaranteed usable range. Reserve volume, fuel-gauge behavior, conditions, and the rider’s preferred safety margin reduce the practical distance between refueling stops.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe digital fuel gauge is useful, but owners should learn how much fuel the tank takes at a normal refill instead of relying on the display as a precise remaining-mileage calculator. Carrying fuel beyond the motorcycle’s capacity or riding until the tank is completely dry is not a substitute for conservative planning.
Maintenance and running costs
The Monkey’s air-cooled single-cylinder engine is mechanically uncomplicated, but ownership is not limited to occasional oil changes. The chain, valves, brakes, brake fluid, tires, steering bearings, clutch, fasteners, and electrical system all matter. Follow the complete schedule in Honda’s 2024 owner’s manual.
| Maintenance item | Honda guidance |
|---|---|
| Break-in | First 300 miles / 500 km |
| Break-in riding | Avoid full-throttle starts, rapid acceleration, hard braking, rapid downshifts, and generally ride conservatively |
| Drive chain | Inspect and maintain every 300 miles / 500 km |
| First scheduled service | 600 miles / 1,000 km |
| Engine oil | Annual replacement appears in the schedule; follow the manual’s mileage and time intervals |
| Brake fluid | Replace every two years |
| Cold tire pressure | 29 psi front and rear |
| Chain slack | 1 3/16–1 9/16 inches, or 30–40mm |
| Recommended oil | SAE 10W-30, JASO T 903 MA, API SJ or higher, or equivalent motorcycle oil |
| Oil capacity after draining | 1.0 U.S. quart / 0.9 liter |
| Fuel | Unleaded gasoline, 86 PON or higher |
Beyond scheduled service, budget for motorcycle insurance, registration, protective gear, tires, chain lubricant, and possible dealer labor. A HondaCare service contract may be available, but coverage, pricing, eligibility, and transfer terms should be confirmed with the dealer rather than assumed.
Rank #4
The 2024 brochure states a transferable one-year limited warranty with unlimited mileage. For a leftover motorcycle, confirm when the warranty began, whether the dealer completed all pre-delivery work, and what documentation is required for transfer.

Monkey versus Grom, Dax 125, Trail125, and Super Cub C125
The best alternative depends more on the job than on a specification-sheet victory.
| If you prioritize… | Consider… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Retro styling and a manual miniMOTO | Monkey | Classic Monkey appearance, five-speed clutch transmission, upright ergonomics, wide solo seat, twin shocks, and standard front ABS. |
| Sportier styling and customization | Grom | More modern, aggressive styling and a large aftermarket. Honda’s current lineup includes non-ABS, ABS, and SP versions. |
| Clutch-free retro riding | Dax 125 | Uses a four-speed semi-automatic transmission, step-through-inspired frame, front ABS, and a 30.6-inch seat. |
| Utility, cargo, and light off-pavement use | Trail125 | Four-speed semi-automatic transmission, front ABS, and a rear cargo rack make it more practical than the Monkey. |
| Traditional transportation and step-through convenience | Super Cub C125 | Clutch-free semi-automatic operation and practical step-through ergonomics. The 2024 U.S. model listed at $3,899 MSRP plus $300 destination. |
Monkey versus Grom
The Grom is the more modern and sport-oriented choice, with bodywork that is easy to personalize and a more aggressive visual identity. The Monkey is the better fit for buyers who value retro styling, an upright posture, a thick solo seat, twin rear shocks, and front ABS included in the 2024 trim.
Neither is a serious high-speed touring motorcycle. Choose based on style, riding posture, customization plans, and whether you want the Monkey’s standard ABS configuration or a particular Grom trim.
Monkey versus Dax 125
The Dax 125 uses the same broad 124cc miniMOTO engine family but pairs it with a four-speed semi-automatic transmission. It is the more natural choice for someone who wants to shift without operating a clutch. Choose the Monkey if you specifically want a manual transmission, 12-inch tire profile, and Monkey styling.
Monkey versus Trail125
The Trail125 is the utility-oriented option. Its semi-automatic transmission, rear cargo rack, and light off-pavement capability make it better for errands, gear, and mixed-surface riding. The Monkey is smaller in spirit and more focused on compact urban fun.
Monkey versus Super Cub C125
The Super Cub C125 is the more traditional transportation tool, with step-through ergonomics and clutch-free semi-automatic shifting. It was also less expensive than the 2024 Monkey at list price. The Monkey makes more sense when the buyer values the retro miniMOTO experience over maximum practicality.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Accessories and modifications
Honda’s current Monkey feature page lists a rear carrier and USB-C charger kit. A rear carrier can make a small bike more useful, but it adds weight and cost; verify the carrier’s load limit and keep the motorcycle’s total weight within Honda’s stated maximum. A USB-C charger is useful for navigation, but its wiring should be installed correctly and protected from water and chafing.
Rack bags must not block the tail light, license plate, exhaust, suspension, or rider controls. Windshields can alter wind load and stability. Exhaust, intake, ECU, big-bore, gearing, and suspension modifications may affect emissions compliance, noise, reliability, warranty disputes, resale value, and ABS operation.
Recommended Free Tools
Honda warns that the recommended tires and sprockets should be used for correct ABS operation. Be particularly cautious with nonstandard tire sizes, altered gearing, removed emissions equipment, poorly wired electrical accessories, and parts from stunt, track, or off-road builds.
Buying a leftover or used 2024 Honda Monkey
Before visiting the seller
- Obtain the VIN and compare it with the advertisement and title.
- Check the VIN through Honda’s recall information guidance and the NHTSA recall lookup.
- Request an itemized out-the-door quote, including freight, setup, documentation, accessories, taxes, and registration.
- Confirm whether the motorcycle is genuinely new, leftover, or used.
- Ask for service records and the first-service record at 600 miles or 1,000 km.
- Ask whether the motorcycle has been modified, dropped, raced, used for stunts, or ridden off-road.
- Confirm that both keys, the owner’s manual, tool kit, and warranty documents are included.
Extra checks for leftover 2024 inventory
- Ask when the warranty started and whether it is still active.
- Check battery condition and whether the battery was maintained during storage.
- Inspect tires for age-related cracking and flat spots, not just tread depth.
- Verify that the dealer completed setup, assembly, fluid checks, chain adjustment, and pre-delivery inspection.
- Confirm that the advertised price does not conceal setup, freight, assembly, or documentation charges.
- Do not assume “new” means recently manufactured.
Physical inspection
- Request a cold start. A seller should explain why the engine is already warm if it is not cold.
- Look for oil, fuel, brake-fluid, or other leaks.
- Inspect fork tubes and seals for damage or seepage.
- Check chain slack, lubrication, and sprocket wear.
- Inspect both tires for cracking, uneven wear, incorrect sizing, and age.
- Check both brake discs for deep scoring, warping, or unusual corrosion.
- Test the steering-head bearings for notchiness or looseness.
- Check wheel alignment and look for bent rims.
- Test every light, turn signal, switch, and indicator.
- Confirm the digital display, fuel gauge, trip meters, and warning lamps work.
- Verify that the side-stand engine interlock shuts the engine off when selected gear is engaged with the stand down.
- Confirm that the ABS light illuminates during the self-test and goes out after moving off.
- Inspect the frame, engine cases, bar ends, foot pegs, levers, and exhaust for crash damage.
- Look for evidence of wheelies, stunt use, drops, or off-road abuse.
- Match the VIN on the frame to the title and registration paperwork.
Test ride
Only test ride after confirming that you are properly licensed, insured, and legally permitted to operate the motorcycle. Check that:
- The clutch engages smoothly without excessive drag or slipping.
- All five gears select cleanly without false neutrals or difficult shifts.
- The engine pulls cleanly through the rev range without hesitation.
- Front and rear brakes operate progressively and independently.
- The motorcycle tracks straight without pulling, wobble, or abnormal vibration.
- There are no unusual cam-chain, clutch, transmission, or bottom-end noises.
- The ABS indicator behaves normally after the motorcycle begins moving.

Frequently asked questions
Is the 2024 Honda Monkey street legal?
It is built as a street motorcycle, but registration, licensing, equipment, and road-access rules vary by state. Because it displaces 124cc, some states may restrict it from particular freeways or limited-access roads.
Does the 2024 Honda Monkey have ABS?
Yes. ABS is standard on the front wheel. The rear wheel does not have ABS.

Can two people ride the 2024 Monkey?
No. Honda’s owner’s manual lists passenger capacity as rider only. The motorcycle’s 231-pound maximum weight capacity includes the rider, luggage, and accessories.
How much did a new 2024 Honda Monkey cost?
The original U.S. MSRP was $4,299, plus a $300 destination charge. Taxes, title, registration, dealer fees, setup, accessories, and market adjustments were additional.
How many gears does it have?
It has five forward gears and a hand-operated clutch, with a one-down, four-up shift pattern.
What is the 2024 Monkey’s seat height?
Seat height is 30.5 inches. That helps many shorter riders, but taller riders should sit on the motorcycle to evaluate knee angle and handlebar reach.
How much does it weigh?
Honda’s marketing specifications list a 231-pound curb weight. The owner’s manual contains a 229-pound curb-weight entry, so Honda’s documents differ by 2 pounds.
What MPG does the 2024 Monkey get?
Historical 2024 Honda-associated listings commonly quote 169 mpg. Later Honda 2025 and 2026 pages list 162.6 mpg. Actual fuel economy varies with rider, cargo, weather, maintenance, tire pressure, route, and riding style.
What is different between the 2023 and 2024 Monkey?
The U.S. 2024 color lineup was Pearl Nebula Red and Pearl Black; Banana Yellow was a 2023 color. The 2024 materials list 4.3 inches of front-fork travel versus 3.9 inches in the 2023 brochure, but the available Honda documents do not establish that this represents a major redesign.
Is a used 2024 Monkey worth buying in 2026?
It can be, provided the motorcycle has a clean title, good service history, correct equipment, and a price meaningfully below a current 2026 model. A leftover 2024 listed near its original $4,599 MSRP-plus-destination subtotal has a weaker value argument because the 2026 model is listed at $4,399 plus the same $300 destination charge.

Is the 2024 Honda Monkey suitable for highway commuting?
Usually not as a primary highway motorcycle. Its 124cc engine has limited power reserve, and Honda warns that sub-150cc motorcycles may face state-specific highway restrictions. Check both the law and the actual traffic conditions on your route.
Does the Monkey have a passenger seat?
It has a broad solo seat, but Honda lists the 2024 Monkey’s passenger capacity as rider only. Carrying a passenger is not approved.
What should I verify on a used Monkey’s ABS system?
The ABS indicator should illuminate during the ignition self-check, then go out after the motorcycle exceeds approximately 6 mph. If it stays on while riding, the conventional brakes work but the anti-lock function is unavailable.
What is the most important maintenance item besides oil?
The drive chain deserves frequent attention. Honda specifies checking and maintaining it every 300 miles or 500 km, with 30–40mm of slack. Tires, brakes, brake fluid, valves, steering bearings, and fasteners also require scheduled inspection.
The Bottom Line
The 2024 Honda Monkey is worth considering when the priority is character, easy urban riding, and a manual miniMOTO experience rather than speed, cargo, or passenger capability. Its strongest features are the low seat, compact handling, fuel injection, five-speed transmission, front ABS, and distinctive styling. Its decisive limitations are the rider-only capacity, 124cc performance, state-dependent highway access, and unusually restrictive stated maximum weight capacity.
For a 2024 example in 2026, condition and price matter more than the model-year badge. A well-maintained used bike at a sensible discount can be compelling; a leftover 2024 priced close to a current 2026 should be negotiated carefully.
