Why Is My Phone Connecting to My Car but Not Playing Music?

A phone can connect to a car for calls without sending music. Learn how to check the vehicle source, phone output, Android Media audio, iPhone routing, CarPlay, Android Auto, cables, apps, and older-car compatibility.

When your phone says it is connected to your car but music is silent, the connection may be working only for calls—not for media. Bluetooth hands-free calling and Bluetooth music use different functions: the Hands-Free Profile handles calls, while the Advanced Audio Distribution Profile is used for streaming audio. A successful call therefore does not prove that your car supports or has enabled Bluetooth music. See the Bluetooth SIG explanation of supported Bluetooth functionality.

The first things to check are the car’s selected audio source, the phone’s audio-output destination, and whether the media-audio function is enabled. If you use CarPlay or Android Auto, diagnose that system separately because it may have replaced ordinary Bluetooth Audio as the active media path.

Perform these steps while parked. Start with the short checklist below rather than deleting every pairing immediately.

The fastest fix

  1. On the car display, select Bluetooth Audio, Bluetooth Music, Media, CarPlay, or Android Auto as appropriate. Selecting the phone under Phone does not necessarily select it as a music source.
  2. Start a song or podcast, then raise the car’s volume while that media is actively playing. Check the phone’s media volume and make sure the source is not muted.
  3. On an iPhone, open the Playback Destination control from the app, Lock Screen, or Control Center and choose the car.
  4. On Android, open the Bluetooth settings for the car and turn on Media audio. Leave Phone audio enabled too if you want hands-free calls.
  5. Disconnect AirPods, headphones, speakers, smartwatches, or other phones that might be receiving the media stream.
  6. Determine whether CarPlay or Android Auto is active. If it is, play media through that system and select its source on the car display.
  7. Switch the car to another source and back, then pause and resume playback. Restart the phone and infotainment system if the media channel appears stuck.
  8. Only after those checks, forget the vehicle on the phone, remove the phone from the car’s paired-device list, and pair them again.

If radio works but phone audio does not, the speakers and amplifier are less likely to be the immediate problem. If every source is silent, stop treating this as a Bluetooth pairing problem and investigate the vehicle audio system.

First identify how the phone is connected

The correct fix depends on the connection method. Identify which setup you are using:

  • Bluetooth only: The phone is paired directly to the car for calls and, if supported, Bluetooth Audio.
  • Wired Apple CarPlay: The iPhone uses a USB data connection and projects its supported apps to the car.
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay: The phone uses Bluetooth and Wi-Fi as part of the wireless projection connection.
  • Wired Android Auto: The Android phone uses a data-capable USB cable.
  • Wireless Android Auto: The first setup uses Bluetooth, then Wi-Fi carries part of the wireless connection.
  • USB media playback without CarPlay or Android Auto: The car reads compatible media or audio from the USB connection. The port must support data and media; a charging-only port will not.
  • AUX: A 3.5-mm cable carries analog sound, but the phone and car still have separate volume controls.
  • FM transmitter or aftermarket adapter: The phone sends audio to an accessory, which then broadcasts or feeds the car. This has a different set of source, frequency, power, and compatibility issues.

Do not troubleshoot a silent USB CarPlay connection as though it were ordinary Bluetooth, and do not disable Wi-Fi as a generic Bluetooth fix if you use wireless CarPlay or wireless Android Auto.

What does connected actually mean?

Several different states are often compressed into one word on a phone or car display:

  • Paired: The phone and car remember each other and can usually reconnect.
  • Connected for calls: The hands-free phone function is active. Call audio and the car’s microphone can work even when music streaming is unavailable.
  • Connected for media: The car has an active media-streaming connection and is receiving the phone’s music or podcast audio.
  • Connected through CarPlay or Android Auto: A projection system is handling the interface and may also be handling media audio.
  • Car audio source selected: The vehicle is actively listening to the input carrying the phone’s audio.

The phone can be paired and connected for calls while the car remains tuned to FM, set to AUX, or parked on a phone-only screen. Some older vehicles support Bluetooth calls but not Bluetooth music at all. Google notes that not all cars can play music over Bluetooth, and Samsung explains that some vehicles expose phone audio without a Media audio option.

Why calls work while music does not

Bluetooth devices negotiate capabilities rather than providing one universal audio connection. The Hands-Free Profile, or HFP, is designed for hands-free communication. The Advanced Audio Distribution Profile, or A2DP, is used for higher-quality media streaming. Android’s Bluetooth profile documentation describes A2DP as the profile for high-quality Bluetooth audio.

This does not mean every vehicle displays HFP and A2DP as separate switches, but it explains the symptom. Calls working proves only that the call-related function is operating. It does not prove that the car supports Bluetooth music, that Android Media audio is enabled, that the car is listening to Bluetooth Audio, or that the phone is sending sound there.

Use this symptom table to narrow down the fault

What works What it suggests First test
Calls work, but music does not Wrong source, disabled media profile, call-only Bluetooth support, or incorrect phone output route Select Bluetooth Audio and check the phone’s media setting
Radio works, but Bluetooth, CarPlay, or Android Auto is silent Phone route, source selection, cable, projection setup, app, or software issue Start media, select the correct source, and try another app or connection method
Every audio source is silent Mute, master volume, amplifier, fuse, audio module, wiring, or vehicle software problem Test FM/AM and check the vehicle’s audio controls
Only one app is silent App account, network, subscription, content, or app compatibility problem Try a downloaded file and a second media app
The track timer moves but the speakers remain silent Wrong output route, muted media channel, source error, or an infotainment audio-channel failure Raise volume during playback, switch sources, and restart the infotainment system
Another phone works in the car Settings, software, compatibility, or pairing issue on the original phone Compare output and media-audio settings on the two phones
No phone works in the car Vehicle source, compatibility, firmware, or hardware issue Check the owner’s manual for Bluetooth Audio support and vehicle updates

Fixes that apply to any phone or car

1. Select the car’s actual media source

Look for a physical Source, Audio, or Media button, or open the source selector on the infotainment display. Depending on the vehicle, the option may be called Bluetooth Audio, BT Audio, Bluetooth Music, or simply Media.

The vehicle may currently be listening to:

  • FM or AM radio;
  • SiriusXM or another satellite-radio source;
  • AUX;
  • USB;
  • CD;
  • a different paired phone;
  • the vehicle’s Phone screen instead of Bluetooth Audio; or
  • CarPlay or Android Auto.

Bluetooth connection status and audio-source selection are separate. For example, the Toyota Bluetooth Audio instructions treat Bluetooth audio as a distinct source. Ford likewise describes Bluetooth Stereo as an audio source that must be selected. Your labels and menu order may differ by make, model year, trim, region, and infotainment generation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Adjust the correct volume

Start the music or podcast first. Then turn up the physical car volume knob or steering-wheel control. Many vehicles maintain separate levels for:

  • media;
  • navigation prompts;
  • voice assistant responses;
  • phone calls;
  • ringers; and
  • notifications.

Turning up the volume while FM is playing may adjust the radio level, not the Bluetooth media level. Likewise, changing volume while a navigation prompt is speaking may change the navigation volume. Google says some vehicles control navigation, media, and voice volumes separately.

Also check the phone’s media volume, the car’s mute state, and any source-specific volume setting. Test FM/AM. If radio is audible, the car’s main speakers and amplifier are probably capable of producing sound, although a source-specific vehicle fault can still exist.

3. Test a second audio source

Play a downloaded or local audio file, then try a second music or podcast app. This separates the Bluetooth or projection connection from the streaming service.

  • If local audio and another app work, check the affected app’s login, network connection, subscription, content availability, and updates.
  • If the app plays through the phone speaker but not through the car, focus on output routing and the vehicle source.
  • If the track controls work and the timer advances but no sound comes from the car, switch sources and restart the infotainment system.

4. Disconnect competing audio devices

AirPods, earbuds, portable speakers, another vehicle, or another Bluetooth accessory may have captured the audio output. Temporarily disconnect other Bluetooth audio devices, then select the car manually as the destination. A vehicle that remembers several phones may also connect one phone for calls and another for media, so remove old or unused phones from the car’s memory.

5. Recover from a stuck audio channel

If music stopped after a phone call, Siri or Google Assistant session, source change, vehicle restart, USB connection, or switch between Bluetooth and projection, try this sequence:

  1. Switch from the current phone source to FM or another source.
  2. Switch back to Bluetooth Audio, CarPlay, or Android Auto.
  3. Pause and resume the track.
  4. Close and reopen the media app.
  5. Turn the audio system off and on.
  6. Turn the vehicle off completely and restart it according to the owner’s manual.
  7. Restart the phone.

This is not merely theoretical. GM technical bulletin 16-NA-011 documents an infotainment condition in which media audio did not return after a Bluetooth call or Siri interaction. The bulletin applies to specified GM vehicles and does not establish a universal fault in every car.

iPhone: restore ordinary Bluetooth music

  1. Open Settings > Bluetooth and confirm that the car is connected.
  2. Start a song or podcast.
  3. Open the Playback Destination control from the media app, Lock Screen, or Control Center.
  4. Select the vehicle instead of iPhone, AirPods, another speaker, or another Bluetooth device. Apple documents this process in its guide to playing audio from iPhone on a Bluetooth accessory.
  5. Raise the iPhone media volume and the car’s media volume while playback is active.

If the car is connected for calls but does not appear as an audio destination, the vehicle may not support Bluetooth music, the car may be on the wrong source, or the pairing may be incomplete. Do not treat a working phone call as proof of A2DP support.

Optional iPhone device classification

On supported iOS versions, you can classify the accessory as a car by opening Settings > Bluetooth, tapping the information button beside the vehicle, choosing Device Type, and selecting Car Stereo or Car, depending on the label shown. This is an audio-device classification setting, not a guaranteed fix for silent speakers.

Forget and re-pair an iPhone

Use this only after checking the source and output route:

  1. Open Settings > Bluetooth on the iPhone.
  2. Tap the information button beside the car.
  3. Choose Forget This Device.
  4. In the car, delete the iPhone from the paired-device or Bluetooth memory list.
  5. Remove old phones if the vehicle’s memory is crowded.
  6. Turn Bluetooth off and back on, restart both devices, and pair again while parked.

Apple also provides Bluetooth troubleshooting steps for restarting, unpairing, and pairing an accessory again. If several phones are used in the same car, renaming the iPhone can make it easier to select the intended device; Apple discusses this in its car-connection guide.

Android: turn on Media audio

The most important Android check is separate from the Phone audio setting:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Connected devices.
  3. Tap Bluetooth or Saved devices.
  4. Tap the gear or settings icon beside the car.
  5. Turn on Media audio.
  6. Leave Phone audio on as well if you want hands-free calls.

Exact menu names vary among Samsung, Google Pixel, Motorola, OnePlus, and other phones, and they can change with the Android version. Google’s Android Bluetooth troubleshooting guide specifically separates Media audio from Phone audio. Samsung gives the same remedy in its guide to a car stereo that connects but does not play media.

If there is no Media audio option at all, that is an important compatibility clue. The car may support hands-free calls only, or its Bluetooth system may need a firmware update. Do not assume that turning Bluetooth off and on will add a media function the vehicle does not provide.

CarPlay and Android Auto: troubleshoot the active projection system

CarPlay and Android Auto are not simply alternate names for ordinary Bluetooth Audio. Wired versions use USB data, while wireless versions use additional Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connection layers. Some infotainment systems suspend ordinary Bluetooth Audio when projection is active. A Toyota manual, for example, states that Bluetooth audio may be suspended when Apple CarPlay or Android Auto is established. That wording is vehicle-specific, but it illustrates why the phone’s Bluetooth device page may not control the active media route.

Apple CarPlay

For wired CarPlay:

  1. Put the vehicle in Park.
  2. Use the vehicle’s CarPlay-enabled USB port, not necessarily the port used only for charging.
  3. Use a reliable data-capable cable and try another cable if needed.
  4. Try another compatible USB port if the vehicle has one.
  5. Unlock the iPhone and accept prompts.
  6. If CarPlay does not open automatically, select the CarPlay logo on the vehicle display.
  7. Open a supported music or podcast app inside CarPlay and start playback.

For wireless CarPlay:

  1. Keep Bluetooth and Wi-Fi turned on.
  2. Open Settings > Wi-Fi and confirm that the CarPlay network has Auto-Join enabled.
  3. Select the CarPlay logo on the car display.
  4. Make sure Siri is enabled.
  5. Check Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Allowed Apps and make sure CarPlay is allowed.
  6. If the connection is stale, open Settings > General > CarPlay, choose the vehicle, tap Forget This Car, and set it up again.

These checks follow Apple’s current CarPlay troubleshooting guidance. Apple also recommends trying another cable or USB port, checking the phone’s connector for debris, and keeping iOS and vehicle firmware current. A USB cable that charges the phone may still be unreliable for data or projection.

Android Auto

For wired Android Auto:

  1. Put the vehicle in Park and turn on the infotainment system.
  2. Use a reliable data-capable USB cable.
  3. Use the vehicle’s primary Android Auto USB port. On some Ford systems, the port closest to the SYNC screen is the recommended port.
  4. Follow prompts on the phone and car display.
  5. Tap Android Auto on the vehicle display if it does not start automatically.
  6. Open a compatible, signed-in media app in Android Auto and start playback.

For wireless Android Auto:

  1. Turn on Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services during setup.
  2. Pair the phone and vehicle by Bluetooth the first time.
  3. Allow Android Auto to start.
  4. Tap Android Auto on the vehicle display if necessary.
  5. Open a compatible media app that is signed in on the phone.

Google’s Android Auto setup instructions cover wired and wireless requirements. Its media guide notes that compatible media apps must be installed and signed in; some services may also require an applicable subscription.

Do not disable Wi-Fi while diagnosing wireless Android Auto. Wi-Fi is part of the wireless projection connection even though Bluetooth may be the part that first shows the vehicle as connected.

Check the USB cable and port for wired connections

A cable or port cannot explain a Bluetooth-only failure, but it is a leading possibility when wired CarPlay or Android Auto is silent or does not start. Check for:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • a charge-only cable;
  • a damaged or loose cable;
  • the wrong USB port;
  • debris in the phone’s connector;
  • a problematic USB-C-to-Lightning adapter;
  • a vehicle port that supplies power but not data; or
  • a failed USB port or infotainment module.

Try a different known-good data cable and the vehicle’s designated projection port. Do not assume that every USB port supports music, media, CarPlay, or Android Auto. Some provide charging only, while others support USB media or phone projection.

Could the music app or network be the problem?

Bluetooth or CarPlay can be functioning correctly while a particular app fails. Separate these cases:

  • No media app produces sound: Focus on source selection, output routing, volume, compatibility, or the infotainment system.
  • Only Spotify, Apple Music, or one podcast app fails: Check that app’s login, subscription, network connection, content availability, and current version.
  • Podcasts fail but music works: The podcast app or its network/content state is more suspicious than the car speakers.
  • Downloaded audio works but streaming does not: Investigate mobile data, Wi-Fi, account status, service availability, or the streaming app.
  • The app plays on the phone speaker but not the car: Recheck the output destination and active car source.

Run a controlled test with one downloaded or local audio file, a second media app, and the phone speaker with the car disconnected. For Android Auto, use a compatible media app signed in on the phone. If a third-party app alone fails on an iPhone, Apple recommends testing another app and contacting the app developer if the problem remains isolated to that app; see Apple’s car-connection guidance.

Older vehicles may support calls but not Bluetooth music

Some older factory systems expose Bluetooth only for hands-free calls. They can pair with a phone, show a connection indicator, and route calls through the speakers without offering Bluetooth Audio or an Android Media audio switch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the vehicle owner’s manual for Bluetooth Audio, Bluetooth music, or A2DP support. If those capabilities are absent, use an available alternative:

Restart before resetting everything

A restart is a low-risk recovery step when the source or media channel has stalled, but it is not a diagnosis. Use this order:

  1. Pause and resume playback.
  2. Switch to FM or another source, then back to the intended phone source.
  3. Close and reopen the media app.
  4. Turn the infotainment system off and on.
  5. Turn the vehicle off completely and restart it according to the owner’s manual.
  6. Restart the phone.

There is no universal infotainment reset command. Some vehicles use a particular button combination, key cycle, or module reset, while others require a dealer or head-unit manufacturer procedure. Use the model-specific owner’s manual. Ford’s official sound troubleshooting distinguishes source-specific problems from no-sound-from-any-source conditions and includes vehicle-specific reset and dealer-diagnosis guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Forget and pair again only when the record may be stale

Re-pairing can clear a corrupted or incomplete connection, but it cannot fix a muted source, an unsupported vehicle, a phone playing to AirPods, a signed-out app, or a separate media volume set to zero. Use it after checking routing, source, volume, and compatibility.

  1. Delete the car from the phone’s Bluetooth or CarPlay device list.
  2. Delete the phone from the car’s Bluetooth or infotainment memory.
  3. Remove old or unused phones from the car if its paired-device list is full or crowded.
  4. Turn Bluetooth off and back on.
  5. Restart the phone and infotainment system.
  6. Pair again while parked and accept all call, contact, media, and projection prompts.

Google recommends forgetting the car on Android, clearing phones from the car’s memory, and pairing again. Apple provides equivalent iPhone Bluetooth pairing instructions and recommends forgetting and reconnecting when ordinary Bluetooth troubleshooting does not resolve the problem.

Check for software and firmware problems

Update the phone operating system, affected media app, CarPlay or Android Auto components where applicable, and the vehicle’s infotainment firmware. Apple specifically recommends current iOS and vehicle firmware for CarPlay. Google recommends current Android Auto and Google Play services when preparing an Android Auto bug report.

Software bugs do occur, particularly after an operating-system, media-app, Google Play services, or infotainment update. But do not assume that the latest update is universally responsible. Google’s Android Auto community documented a media-audio problem after the December 2024 Android feature drop and stated on March 12, 2025 that a fix had been implemented, advising users to update the device and media apps. That is historical evidence of a platform-specific incident, not proof that every current silent connection has the same cause. See the Google Android Auto issue thread.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Avoid jumping straight to developer options, clearing system data, factory-resetting the phone, or resetting every network setting. A phone network reset is a last resort because it can remove saved Wi-Fi networks and other network-related settings, and it is not necessary for the initial source-and-routing checks.

When every source is silent

If FM/AM, USB, Bluetooth, CarPlay, and Android Auto all produce no sound, check the vehicle’s master mute, main volume, amplifier, fuse, audio-control module, firmware, speakers, and wiring. Phone re-pairing is unlikely to repair a vehicle that cannot produce audio from its radio either.

If only the phone source is silent while radio works, the likely fault is narrower: wrong source, media route, cable, projection setup, app, Bluetooth capability, stale pairing, or vehicle software. If the car’s display freezes, repeatedly drops the audio channel, or has the same problem with every phone, contact the vehicle manufacturer, dealer, or aftermarket head-unit maker.

What not to assume

  • Connected does not mean media connected. Calls and music can use different Bluetooth functions.
  • Bluetooth is not always the active path. CarPlay or Android Auto may be carrying the media.
  • A charging USB port is not necessarily a data port.
  • Every vehicle does not support Bluetooth music. Older systems may support calls only.
  • Re-pairing is not the first step. Source and output selection are faster and less disruptive checks.
  • Wi-Fi should not be disabled automatically. Wireless CarPlay and Android Auto require it as part of their connection.

Why can I make calls through my car but not play music?

Hands-free calling and Bluetooth music use different functions. The car may support calls but not media streaming, Android Media audio may be disabled, the car may be on the wrong source, or the phone may be sending sound to another device. Select Bluetooth Audio, choose the car as the phone’s output, and check the vehicle’s manual for Bluetooth Audio or A2DP support.

Why does my phone show that music is playing while the car is silent?

The phone may be routing audio to the phone speaker or another Bluetooth device, or the car may be listening to FM, AUX, USB, or another source. Start playback, select the car as the output, switch the vehicle to its Bluetooth Audio or active CarPlay/Android Auto source, and raise the car’s media volume while the track is playing.

Why does music play on my phone instead of through the car?

On iPhone, open the Playback Destination control from the app, Lock Screen, or Control Center and select the car. On Android, open the car’s Bluetooth settings and enable Media audio. Also disconnect AirPods, headphones, speakers, and other competing Bluetooth devices.

Why does Bluetooth audio stop when CarPlay or Android Auto connects?

Some infotainment systems suspend ordinary Bluetooth Audio when CarPlay or Android Auto is active. Use the CarPlay or Android Auto screen and open a compatible media app there, then select CarPlay or Android Auto as the vehicle source. Wired systems require a data-capable USB cable; wireless systems require additional Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity.

Do all cars support Bluetooth music?

No. Some older vehicles support Bluetooth hands-free calls but not Bluetooth music. If the car has no Bluetooth Audio source and Android offers no Media audio option, check the manual before treating it as a phone fault. AUX, a data-capable USB media connection, an FM transmitter, or an aftermarket head unit may be alternatives.

Why did music stop after a phone call or Siri interaction?

The infotainment system may have failed to restore its media channel after the call or assistant session. Switch to another source and back, pause and resume the track, restart the media app, and restart the infotainment system and phone. A documented GM bulletin describes this type of vehicle-side failure for specified systems.

Should I reset network settings or factory-reset my phone?

Not at the beginning. First check the car source, phone output route, Android Media audio, volume, app, cable, compatibility, and restarts. Network resetting can remove saved Wi-Fi networks and other settings, while a factory reset is highly disruptive and rarely justified before phone, vehicle, and app isolation tests.

The Bottom Line

A car can show a phone as connected while receiving calls but not music. Check the active car source, the phone’s media-output destination, and the separate media-audio capability before deleting pairings. For Android, enable Media audio; for iPhone, select the car under Playback Destination. If CarPlay or Android Auto is active, use that system’s source and media app instead of ordinary Bluetooth Audio.

Then test another app, another connection method, another phone, and the car’s radio. Those comparisons reveal whether the problem belongs to the phone, app, cable, connection mode, infotainment software, Bluetooth compatibility, or vehicle audio hardware.
