The 2024 Ford Mustang GT Premium is worth the money when you specifically want the modern V8 Mustang experience: a naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8, rear-wheel drive, a choice of six-speed manual or 10-speed automatic transmissions, and a usable premium coupe. It is not the cheapest or most practical Mustang, but it may be one of the last mainstream ways to buy this combination of engine, gearbox, and heritage.
The short verdict
The 2024 Ford Mustang GT Premium is worth the money when you specifically want the modern V8 Mustang experience: a naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8, rear-wheel drive, a choice of six-speed manual or 10-speed automatic transmissions, and a usable—if not especially practical—premium coupe.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
It is not the cheapest Mustang, the most economical daily driver, or the sharpest version of the seventh-generation car. Its appeal is more specific than that. The GT Premium preserves the sound, response, mechanical involvement, and cultural significance of a mainstream American V8 coupe at a time when those traits are becoming harder to find.
Ford rates the standard GT at 480 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque. Cars equipped with the active exhaust produce 486 horsepower and 418 lb-ft. Those figures are only part of the story: the GT Premium’s real value is the combination of naturally aspirated power, rear-wheel drive, transmission choice, modern cabin technology, and Mustang heritage.

What is the 2024 Mustang GT Premium?
The 2024 Mustang begins the model’s seventh generation. The GT Premium sits above the regular GT in equipment and presentation but uses the same fundamental 5.0-liter V8 formula. Kelley Blue Book listed the original GT Premium coupe MSRP at approximately $49,975.
That price buys a four-seat, front-engine, rear-wheel-drive coupe rather than a practical family car. The Premium designation makes the cabin and equipment more appealing for daily use, but it does not change the basic compromises created by the Mustang’s long hood, coupe roofline, rear seats, and performance-oriented running costs.
Buyers can choose a six-speed manual transmission with rev matching or an available 10-speed automatic. They create notably different versions of the same car:
- Manual: the more involving choice for drivers who want to participate in every gear change and make the V8 experience feel more mechanical.
- Automatic: the easier option for commuting, traffic, and drivers who prefer effortless performance with less clutch work.
Neither transmission is automatically the correct choice. The manual is not inherently better if the car will spend most of its life in congested traffic, and the automatic does not erase the GT’s enthusiast character. Intended use should decide the specification.
The price of heritage
Horsepower-per-dollar is an incomplete way to judge this Mustang. A buyer is paying for a particular kind of car: a recognizable American coupe with a large-displacement, naturally aspirated V8, rear-wheel drive, and a long-running nameplate. That combination gives the GT Premium an emotional value that a more efficient or faster car may not replicate.
The naturally aspirated engine is central to the experience. It delivers its power without turbochargers, giving the GT a distinctive response and sound profile. That does not make it superior to every turbocharged engine, but it does make the car feel different from the increasingly common downsized or electrified alternatives.
The available active exhaust adds a modest output increase, but its larger benefit is character. It gives the owner more control over how the car sounds and behaves acoustically. That is particularly relevant to a Mustang buyer who sees the engine note as part of the ownership experience rather than an incidental byproduct.

The seventh-generation car also brings contemporary displays, connectivity, and driver-assistance technology. In other words, Ford modernized the Mustang without abandoning the formula that made it important. The GT Premium is not a historical recreation; it is a current, usable interpretation of the V8 pony car.

How much does a used 2024 Mustang GT Premium cost?
The original approximately $49,975 MSRP should not be treated as the automatic value of a two-year-old example. Kelley Blue Book’s current national fair-purchase figure for a used 2024 GT Premium coupe is around $42,700, although actual prices vary with mileage, condition, location, equipment, and vehicle history.
That depreciation improves the case for buying used. A carefully inspected example can provide much of the same V8 experience below its original sticker price. However, lower purchase cost does not guarantee lower ownership cost. A used GT may need expensive tires or brakes sooner than a lightly driven example, and a low price can reflect accident damage, hard use, poor maintenance, or undesirable equipment.
When comparing cars, account for the complete specification rather than comparing trim names alone. Check whether the vehicle has the manual or automatic transmission, active exhaust, the GT Performance Package, premium audio, and other options that affect both desirability and replacement costs.

The GT Premium can serve as a daily driver, but buyers should understand what that means. It has four nominal seats, yet the rear seats are best considered occasional-use seating. Coupe access, the roofline, and limited space can make regular adult passengers, child equipment, or bulky items frustrating.
Do not assume that the four-seat layout makes the car family-friendly. Sit in the rear seat with the people and equipment you expect to carry. If the Mustang will regularly transport adults, child seats, strollers, or large cargo, an in-person test is more valuable than the specification sheet.
Fuel economy is another unavoidable compromise. Kelley Blue Book lists approximately:
| Use | EPA-style rating cited by KBB |
|---|---|
| City | 15 mpg |
| Highway | 23 mpg |
| Combined | 18 mpg |
Those numbers are reasonable within the performance-coupe class, but they are materially worse than the ratings of smaller-engine cars and ordinary commuter vehicles. Premium fuel, enthusiastic driving, insurance, tires, brakes, and other performance-related consumables should be part of the budget from the beginning.

The GT Premium makes sense as a daily driver for someone who accepts those costs in exchange for driving a V8 coupe every day. It makes less sense for someone whose priority is quiet efficiency, maximum cargo flexibility, or the lowest possible monthly transportation cost.

Reasons to buy the GT Premium
1. The V8 is not an afterthought
The 5.0-liter V8 defines the GT. It gives the car a naturally aspirated power delivery and a sound that smaller turbocharged engines cannot reproduce in exactly the same way. If the engine is the reason you are shopping for a Mustang, the GT Premium delivers the central experience without requiring a specialized, track-focused model.
2. You can choose how involved you want to be
The six-speed manual and 10-speed automatic allow the GT Premium to suit two different kinds of owner. The manual makes the car feel more connected and deliberate. The automatic is more convenient in traffic and easier to use consistently on a commute. That flexibility is one of the Mustang’s strengths.
3. It combines old-school hardware with current technology
The rear-drive V8 coupe formula is traditional, but the seventh-generation Mustang is not technologically frozen in time. Modern displays, connectivity, and driver-assistance features make it more livable than an older muscle car while preserving the identity buyers expect from a Mustang GT.
4. It may be more appealing used than new
A used GT Premium below its original MSRP can make the heritage argument easier to defend. The important qualification is condition. A clean history, closed recalls, documented maintenance, healthy tires and brakes, and no evidence of abuse matter more than simply finding the lowest advertised price.
Reasons to hesitate before buying
Fuel and running costs
The 18-mpg combined rating is the clearest recurring penalty. Fuel costs can rise quickly if the car is driven enthusiastically, and a performance coupe can consume tires and brakes faster than an ordinary commuter vehicle. Insurance pricing also varies considerably by driver, location, coverage, and vehicle history, so obtain a quote before committing.
It is the first year of a new generation
2024 launched the seventh-generation Mustang. A new generation can bring better design and technology while also introducing early-production software or component problems. This is not evidence that every 2024 Mustang is unreliable. It is a reason to inspect the individual car carefully and verify its campaign and repair history rather than relying on a general reputation.
Rear-seat and cargo limitations
The traditional coupe shape is part of the appeal, but it limits access and flexibility. Buyers who need frequent rear-seat space or substantial cargo room should compare the Mustang with a practical sedan, hatchback, or SUV before deciding that the occasional-use seats are sufficient.
2024 Mustang recall checks: do this before buying used
Recall verification is mandatory for any used 2024 GT Premium. NHTSA records a 2024 Mustang recall involving an improperly secured clutch pressure line. The line could contact hot exhaust components, melt, leak fluid, cause loss of drive power, and increase fire or crash risk. The filing identified 8,161 potentially affected vehicles.

Ford and NHTSA materials also document an instrument-panel-cluster software issue in which the cluster could remain black and fail to show vehicle speed, fuel level, engine status, and other critical information. These records do not mean that every GT Premium has an unresolved defect. They do mean that a seller’s statement that the model has “no issues” is not a substitute for a VIN-specific check.
- Obtain the vehicle identification number from the seller.
- Run the VIN through the NHTSA recall lookup and Ford’s owner-support systems.
- Ask for repair orders showing that applicable remedies were completed.
- If a recall remains open, confirm with a Ford dealer how and when it will be repaired before completing the purchase.
NHTSA says its VIN lookup is the way to determine whether an individual vehicle has an unrepaired recall. A model-level search is useful background, but it cannot replace the VIN-specific result.
Used 2024 Mustang GT Premium inspection checklist
Before the appointment
- Request the VIN, title status, accident history, mileage, and service records.
- Confirm the transmission, body style, active-exhaust equipment, GT Performance Package, premium audio, and other options.
- Run the VIN through recall databases and ask for documentation of completed campaigns.
During the inspection
- Check the startup sequence. Confirm that the instrument cluster, displays, warning lights, cameras, lighting, and driver-assistance systems operate normally. Pay particular attention to the cluster because of the documented software issue.
- Inspect tires. Look for uneven wear, low tread, mismatched replacements, sidewall damage, and evidence of alignment problems. Performance tires can be expensive to replace.
- Inspect brakes. Check pad and rotor condition and look for vibration, scoring, or unusual noise during the road test.
- Examine the body and underbody. Look for repaired panels, inconsistent gaps, curb damage, scraped underside components, and signs of pothole or track use.
- Test the transmission. A manual should engage gears cleanly and operate its clutch predictably. An automatic should shift without unexplained hesitation, harshness, or warning messages.
- Test the exhaust and controls. If equipped with active exhaust, verify that the settings and valves respond as expected and that there are no warning lights.
- Review maintenance evidence. Look for routine oil, fluid, brake, and tire service rather than accepting verbal assurances.
- Test the seating and cargo area. Bring the people, child equipment, or luggage that matter to you. The nominal four-seat layout may not meet your needs.
A pre-purchase inspection by a qualified technician is especially valuable if the car has unusually low pricing, performance modifications, track-use indications, incomplete records, or a history involving wheels, suspension, or body repairs.
Useful ownership accessories and modifications
Floor protection is a sensible first accessory, particularly if the car is driven year-round. Ford’s Mustang equipment listings identify first-row GT-logo floor mats, but aftermarket fitment varies. If you shop for 2024 Mustang GT Premium floor mats, verify the model year, trim, body style, fastback-versus-convertible application, floor anchors, and whether the set covers the correct seating configuration. Do not assume that a listing labeled simply “2024 Mustang” fits every version.
Owners of cars equipped with the factory active exhaust may also encounter the 2024 Mustang GT active cat-back exhaust as a Ford Performance/Borla upgrade. Ford lists an active cat-back system for 2024–2026 Mustang GT 5.0-liter vehicles equipped with factory active exhaust. Fitment must be confirmed against the vehicle’s configuration, and buyers should consider installation quality, local noise regulations, warranty implications, and total cost before ordering.
A supercharger kit is a fundamentally different decision. Ford Performance lists a 2024–2026 5.0-liter Mustang GT/Dark Horse kit with an advertised 810-horsepower output and a premium-fuel requirement. That is a serious powertrain modification, not a casual ownership accessory. Installation, calibration, emissions legality, warranty coverage, fuel requirements, and geographic restrictions all need to be verified before purchase. For most GT Premium buyers, it belongs in a long-term modification plan—not the initial ownership budget.
Who should buy it?
Buy the GT Premium if:
- You specifically want a naturally aspirated V8.
- You value rear-wheel drive and the option of a manual transmission.
- You want a modern cabin and technology without giving up the traditional Mustang formula.
- You can comfortably budget for premium fuel, tires, brakes, insurance, and maintenance.
- You are willing to inspect a used example carefully and verify recalls by VIN.
Consider something else if:
- Your primary goal is low-cost, fuel-efficient transportation.
- You regularly carry adults in the rear seat or bulky family equipment.
- You want maximum handling sharpness and do not need the standard GT’s grand-touring balance.
- You are considering the GT only because it looks attractive, not because you want the V8 experience.
For a buyer who wants Mustang styling but does not need the V8, the cheaper EcoBoost Mustang may be the more rational choice. For someone who needs space, efficiency, or easy family use, a practical sedan or crossover may be a better fit.

The 2024 Ford Mustang GT Premium is best understood as a modern preservation of the V8 pony-car idea. It is expensive to fuel, constrained in rear-seat usefulness, and deserving of careful recall and condition checks as a used purchase. But it offers a combination that is increasingly difficult to buy in an ordinary production car: a naturally aspirated V8, rear-wheel drive, a manual option, contemporary technology, and genuine cultural continuity.
