Both versions pair their engine with an eight-speed automatic transmission and send power to the rear wheels. The main differences are engine output and reported starting price.

Which trim fits which buyer?
- sDrive30i: The lower-output, lower-reported-price choice, with a turbo four-cylinder producing 255 hp.
- M40i: The more powerful version, with a 382-hp turbo inline-six and a higher reported starting price.
Does the 2024 BMW Z4 have a manual transmission?
No—not in the U.S. 2024 model-year lineup described by Cars.com, which lists both trims with an eight-speed automatic. BMW announced a six-speed manual for the 2025 Z4 M40i on January 30, 2024. The calendar year of that announcement does not make the manual a 2024 model-year feature. BMW’s 2025 M40i Handschalter announcement describes the package as including a retuned chassis, staggered 19-inch front and 20-inch rear wheels, and distinctive styling and trim details.

Interior, roof and cargo space
The Z4 is a two-seat roadster rather than a convertible built for rear passengers. Cars.com describes the cabin as quiet with the roof up and reports 9.9 cubic feet of trunk capacity. That figure gives useful context for luggage, but it does not make the Z4 a substitute for a larger convertible when passenger or cargo flexibility is a priority. Fuel economy
Cars.com reports up to 25 mpg city and 33 mpg highway for the 2024 Z4 range, and lists the sDrive30i at 28 mpg combined on its specifications page. Its overview lists the M40i at 23 mpg city and 31 mpg highway. These are source-reported U.S. ratings; actual mileage varies with driving conditions and vehicle use.
