The 2024 BMW F 900 GS is the lighter, more off-road-focused choice; the F 900 GS Adventure uses the same 105-hp engine but adds fuel capacity and touring equipment at a substantial weight cost. Independent first-ride reports covered the standard F 900 GS, not the Adventure, so their road and dirt impressions should not be treated as a back-to-back verdict. Here is what changed for 2024, what the standard GS felt like on its first ride, and how the specifications distinguish it from the GSA.
What changed for 2024?
BMW enlarged the parallel twin from 853 cc to 895 cc for the F 900 GS and F 900 GS Adventure. In its January 2024 U.S. announcement, BMW rated both at 105 hp at 8,500 rpm and 68.6 lb-ft at 6,750 rpm, compared with 95 hp and 67.8 lb-ft for the previous F 850 GS. BMW attributed the increase to a larger bore, revised cylinder heads and forged pistons, among other engine changes. BMW’s 2024 launch announcement
The standard F 900 GS also lost more than 30 lb relative to the previous F 850 GS, according to BMW. Its launch materials attribute the savings to a new plastic tank, rear section, exhaust and other components. The Adventure shares the new engine but follows a different brief: more fuel capacity and touring-oriented equipment rather than the standard GS’s emphasis on reducing weight for off-road use.
How did the standard F 900 GS ride?
Kevin Duke’s March 2024 Rider Magazine first-ride report describes riding the standard F 900 GS on roads and dirt in Spain. He praised the powerplant and covered the bike’s lower weight, equipment and suspension. The report explicitly says the Adventure was not tested, so it offers no direct riding comparison between the two models.

A separate first-ride account from Cycle Gear/Common Tread found the standard GS planted on pavement and confidence-inspiring on dirt. Its author said clicker adjustments to the suspension made a noticeable difference over rough terrain. The account also describes a particularly rocky section of that press ride where four of five bikes bent rims and two front tires went flat. That is an incident involving a small group of ride bikes, not a general failure rate or evidence that the model has a widespread wheel defect; it does underline the value of matching tire pressure, pace and terrain to the conditions.

Which one suits your riding?
Choose the F 900 GS for a lighter, more dirt-oriented setup
BMW positions the standard GS as the more off-road-focused model. Its current listed ready-to-ride weight is 60 lb below the Adventure’s, and its 21-inch front wheel and long-travel suspension fit that role. The manually adjustable 43 mm fork and rear-shock preload and rebound adjustments let riders tune the standard setup. For more demanding off-road use, BMW offers the Enduro Package Pro, which adds a more adjustable fork, a ZF Sachs rear shock, handlebar risers and an M Endurance chain. Package availability and pricing depend on market and build.

Choose the Adventure for fuel capacity and touring equipment
The GSA’s 6.0-gallon usable tank holds 2.2 gallons more than the standard GS’s 3.8-gallon tank. It also comes with an adjustable touring windscreen, aluminum engine guard and stainless-steel luggage carrier; Dynamic ESA is optional. Those additions and the larger tank suit longer-distance travel, but the capacity difference alone does not establish how far either motorcycle will go between fill-ups. No controlled side-by-side range result is available here.
Check fit and equipment on the actual bike
The nominal standard seat heights are close, but a listed height does not determine whether a motorcycle fits a particular rider. BMW’s current data includes seat and/or lowering options; compare the exact seat and suspension configuration and sit on the specific bike if possible. Likewise, options such as Ride Modes Pro, Engine Drag Torque Control, Gear Shift Assist Pro, cruise control, keyless ride and tire-pressure monitoring may depend on packages or build. Check the individual motorcycle’s equipment list rather than assuming every advertised feature is fitted.

Limits of this first-ride comparison
The standard F 900 GS has independent first-ride impressions from both Rider Magazine and Cycle Gear/Common Tread. The cited Rider report states that its author did not ride the Adventure, and the other ride account also concerns the standard GS. As a result, the weight, capacity and equipment comparison is grounded in BMW’s specifications, while the subjective handling and comfort impressions apply only to the standard model. A direct GSA ride or same-route comparison would be needed for like-for-like conclusions about how the Adventure behaves on road or dirt.
