It was the fourth M5 generation, and its engine, market-specific power ratings and gearbox choices make it a distinctive chapter in the model’s history. Here are ten points that clarify what the car is—and what BMW’s specifications do not tell you about buying one today.
1. The E60 was the fourth-generation M5
BMW M identifies the E60 M5, introduced in 2005, as the fourth generation of the M5. BMW presented it as a performance sedan that retained everyday usability, rather than a track-only car. That intent helps explain the combination of a high-performance powertrain with four doors and adaptive suspension. BMW M’s E60 M5 history
2. Its S85 V10 was the defining change
The E60 M5 introduced BMW M’s first V10 in a production M car. The S85 displaces 4,999 cc—almost exactly five litres. BMW M says the engine concept targeted about 500 hp from that displacement, a goal reflected in the car’s high-output character. BMW M’s historical overview and BMW M’s engine data
3. Power figures vary by market and rating convention
BMW M’s historical account gives the European-market output as 507 hp at 7,750 rpm and 520 Nm of torque at 6,100 rpm. BMW of North America’s 2010 model-year technical data instead lists 500 SAE hp and 383 lb-ft at 6,100 rpm. These are market-specific figures and conventions, not competing corrections of a single number; use the relevant market and model-year documentation when comparing cars. 4. The S85 is built to rev
BMW M lists a 92.0 mm bore, 75.2 mm stroke and 12:1 compression ratio for the S85, with a maximum engine speed of 8,250 rpm. The stroke is shorter than the bore, and the engine’s rated peak power arrives high in the rev range. Those figures describe the engine’s design and operating limit; they are not, by themselves, evidence of reliability or expected service life. BMW M’s S85 technical data and BMW M’s E60 history
5. Gearbox availability depended on the market
Transmission claims need a market and model-year qualifier. BMW M’s historical European description says the E60 M5 used a seven-speed SMG Drivelogic and that a manual version was never made. However, BMW of North America’s 2010 technical sheet lists both a six-speed manual and a seven-speed SMG. For a particular car, verify its original market, model year and documented gearbox rather than assuming every E60 M5 had the same transmission choice. 6. BMW described ion-flow combustion monitoring
BMW’s historical account says the S85 uses ion-flow measurement to monitor combustion. This is an engine-control feature, not a guarantee against mechanical or electronic failures. BMW’s description establishes that the system was part of the engine’s design; it does not establish an overall failure rate or tell you the condition of an individual used car. BMW M’s E60 M5 history
7. The driver could select engine modes
BMW describes three modes—P400, P500 and P500 Sport—and says the car starts in P400, which it characterizes as 400 hp. The modes gave the driver a way to select different engine responses and output settings. They are part of the car’s original operating concept, not evidence that a given car is currently delivering its intended performance. BMW M’s historical overview

8. Adaptive suspension was new to the M5
BMW identifies the E60 M5’s Electronic Damper Control (EDC) adaptive suspension as a first for the M5 and notes that drivers could select settings. That makes suspension configuration part of the car’s character as well as its equipment. BMW’s historical source establishes the feature’s presence, but does not supply used-car condition or repair-cost data. BMW M’s E60 M5 history
9. Acceleration claims depend on the test endpoint
BMW Group Technical Training lists a 0–60 mph time of 4.5 seconds in its comparison data. A BMW Group Press UK fact sheet for a 2010 car gives 0–62 mph in 4.7 seconds. Because the endpoints and reference documents differ, keep each figure attached to its stated measure; they should not be presented as if they were the same test result. 10. Specifications are not a used-car reliability report
BMW’s historical and technical documents establish engineering details and published specifications. They do not provide an owner-cost survey, a long-term failure-rate study, typical repair bills or a current used-market price benchmark. Those figures should not be inferred from the engine’s layout or its official performance data. A buyer assessing a particular E60 M5 needs evidence about that car’s condition and service history, supported by an appropriate inspection; the cited BMW documents alone cannot establish its likely ownership costs.
