The 2024 BMW F 900 GS is the F 850 GS’s successor in this comparison, with a larger, more powerful engine and BMW’s claim that it is more than 30 lb lighter than the previous model. The change is meaningful, especially for off-road riding, but equipment, specifications and prices vary by market and configuration.
What changed between the F 900 GS and F 850 GS?
BMW’s January 2024 U.S. launch information shows the main changes: displacement rose from 853 cc to 895 cc, output increased from 95 hp to 105 hp, and torque edged up from 67.8 lb-ft to 68.6 lb-ft. BMW also says the F 900 GS is over 30 lb lighter than the previous F 850 GS. These are manufacturer figures, not results from an independent side-by-side test.
The F 900 GS is the next generation in this comparison; the F 800 GS was introduced alongside it in 2024, not as the direct replacement for the F 850 GS. BMW’s U.S. launch release gives the F 900 GS’s starting MSRP as $13,495 plus destination in January 2024. That is a launch price, not a current quote.

BMW’s U.S. launch release attributes the output and torque figures to its January 2024 comparison. It quotes Christian Geis, project manager for GS models in the F series, saying the new engine offers “noticeably more pulling power and acceleration.” That is BMW’s description, not an independent ride-test finding. The published figures show a larger gain in peak horsepower than in torque; they do not by themselves establish how either motorcycle feels across its full rev range.

Weight and off-road hardware
BMW says the F 900 GS is over 30 lb lighter than the previous F 850 GS. Separately, BMW Motorrad Germany’s current technical-data page lists the F 900 GS at 219 kg ready to ride, measured with standard equipment and at least 90% of usable fuel-tank capacity. Those figures use different forms of comparison, so do not treat the 219 kg figure as a direct measurement against an F 850 GS unless both bikes are weighed under the same standard and configuration.
BMW Germany lists the F 900 GS with 21-inch front and 17-inch rear cross-spoke wheels, 230 mm of front suspension travel and 215 mm at the rear, plus an adjustable 43 mm inverted fork. BMW says the redesigned ergonomics and lighter plastic fuel tank support off-road riding. Its launch release describes the Enduro Package Pro with sport suspension as an option for more ambitious off-road use; availability and exact equipment can depend on market and configuration.

These specifications explain the F 900 GS’s off-road-focused setup, but they cannot settle the subjective question of whether it is better off road for a particular rider. No independent comparative test result is established here.
Seat height, fuel tank and fit
BMW Motorrad Germany lists an 870 mm standard seat height and 14.5 L usable fuel volume for the F 900 GS. Seat options can change the height, and the German figures should not be assumed to describe every market’s configuration. The surfaced F 850 GS technical sheet is from BMW India and lists an 860 mm seat height; that regional figure is not a universal specification for every F 850 GS.

For a buyer deciding between a new F 900 GS and a used F 850 GS, seat fit is worth checking in person with the intended seat and footwear. A lower listed seat height does not automatically mean a motorcycle will feel easier to manage: width, suspension setup, load and the rider’s reach also matter.
Electronics and equipment
BMW Motorrad Germany’s current F 900 GS page lists a 6.5-inch TFT display with Connectivity, ABS Pro, Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), an Akrapovič sport muffler, Rain and Road riding modes, LED lighting, heated grips and hand protectors. BMW describes some functions and packages as optional, and market equipment can differ, so confirm the exact bike’s standard equipment and installed options rather than assuming every listed item is included on every regional version.

BMW lists hand protectors as standard on the German specification page and describes reinforced hand protection on the GS Trophy style in its launch material. If you are considering replacement hand guards or a tank bag, verify model year, trim, market and mounting compatibility with a dealer or the accessory maker. BMW lists a tank bag among its accessories, but a specific mounting system or accessory SKU is not established here.

The F 900 GS makes the clearer case if you want the newer, more powerful engine and the weight reduction BMW claims, or if its listed chassis and equipment suit your intended riding. An F 850 GS may still be the better purchase if its fit, condition, equipment or price works better for you; the available specifications do not establish a universal winner.
