The 2022 Toyota Hilux GR Sport described here is the South African-market Hilux GR-S 2.8 GD-6 4×4 6AT. Toyota South Africa quoted 165 kW and 550 Nm, with a six-speed automatic transmission, Auto LSD and GR-specific suspension and trim. Those figures and details are market-specific: Toyota Europe’s 2022 GR Sport had a different engine output, and Australia’s GR Sport arrived later with its own specification.
2022 Toyota Hilux GR Sport specs: South African model
Toyota South Africa announced this second South African Hilux GR Sport iteration on 15 September 2022, following the local model’s 2019 debut. Its specified configuration was a 2.8 GD-6 4×4 with a six-speed automatic transmission and Auto LSD. The table below applies to that South African model, not every Hilux sold with a GR Sport badge.
| Specification | South African 2022 Hilux GR-S |
|---|---|
| Model designation | Hilux GR-S 2.8 GD-6 4×4 6AT |
| Engine output | 165 kW (Toyota South Africa, 2022) |

Toyota said the 165 kW and 550 Nm outputs came from a special ECU calibration integrated with revised six-speed automatic transmission mapping and lock-up control. The company also reported a 0.65-second reduction in 0–100 km/h acceleration time compared with its baseline; it did not give the resulting absolute time in the release. What changed on the GR-S?
Suspension and road setup
Toyota South Africa specified monotube shock absorbers paired with stiffer coil springs, describing the aim as improved high-speed stability and handling response. The fitment was 17-inch alloy wheels with 265/65R17 tyres. The release does not establish that this setup is identical to GR Sport versions sold in other countries.

Exterior GR-S details included a prominent black grille with Toyota lettering, wider overfenders, black mirror caps, door handles and side steps, with GR side decals available as an option. Inside, the front seats had Alcantara inserts, while the GR-badged steering wheel and seats, red accents and aluminium pedals distinguished the cabin.
Driver assistance and safety equipment
The South African release listed a panoramic-view monitor and Toyota Safety Sense features: adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert and a pre-collision system. It also named ABS, vehicle stability control, electronic brake-force distribution, hill-assist control and brake assist. Toyota said the equipment package was aligned with the Legend grade except for an auto-dimming rear-view mirror and JBL audio.

Why Hilux GR Sport specifications differ by market
GR Sport is a market-specific trim name, not a guarantee of one global specification. Toyota’s European announcement in January 2022 described a 2.8-litre configuration rated at 150 kW and 500 Nm. It also listed a six-speed automatic, a one-tonne payload and up to 3.5-tonne braked towing capacity. Those power and torque figures belong to the European configuration, not the South African 2022 Hilux GR-S. Toyota Europe’s 2022 announcement.
Toyota Australia’s later HiLux GR Sport was announced in July 2023. Its release cited 165 kW and 550 Nm, along with 265/65R17 Bridgestone Dueler AT tyres, a wider track, KYB monotube shocks, a skid plate, rock rails, recovery points, a towbar and JBL audio. This is a separate Australian-market vehicle; that equipment list should not be read as a specification for South Africa’s 2022 model. Toyota Australia’s 2023 announcement.

South Africa Hilux GR Sport price and launch coverage
At the September 2022 launch, Toyota South Africa listed the Hilux GR-S at R865,400, with a 9-service/90,000 km plan and a 3-year/100,000 km warranty. These are historical launch terms, not a current asking price or confirmation of the coverage attached to a particular used vehicle. Check the vehicle’s paperwork and confirm current price and coverage with Toyota South Africa or the seller.
Choosing tyres for a Hilux GR Sport
The South African 2022 specification was 265/65R17. That size alone does not verify that a replacement tyre is suitable for a particular vehicle or use. Before buying, check the vehicle’s tyre placard, required load and speed ratings, wheel fitment and local regulations. Toyota’s launch release specifies the size but does not endorse a replacement brand or a particular retail tyre.
