Kawasaki rated maximum torque at 39.1 lb.-ft. at 4,500 rpm, but did not publish a horsepower figure in its 2022 U.S. specifications. Original U.S. launch MSRPs ranged from $6,699 to $7,999 depending on trim; those historical prices are not current used values or out-the-door costs.
What changed for 2022?
Kawasaki updated the KLR650 while keeping its core format: a 652 cc four-stroke single-cylinder engine and a five-speed transmission. The most significant change was electronic fuel injection, replacing the carbureted setup associated with earlier versions. The update also revised the fuel system, engine components, chassis, controls, braking, and instrumentation.
- A 10-hole injector and revised fuel system, plus different intake and exhaust cam profiles.
- Revised transmission components and a one-piece frame with a longer swingarm.
- Rubber-mounted handlebar and footpegs, a revised seat, and a taller two-position windscreen.
- A higher-output generator and an LCD instrument panel with a fuel gauge.
- A larger front brake rotor and optional off-road-optimized ABS.
The changes modernized the motorcycle’s equipment and fuel delivery without changing its basic single-cylinder, five-speed character. Kawasaki’s specification sheet lists a sealed-chain final drive, so owners should follow the owner’s manual for chain inspection, adjustment, and lubrication.
2022 KLR650 performance and specifications
Kawasaki’s U.S. specification sheet lists 39.1 lb.-ft. of maximum torque at 4,500 rpm. It does not give a factory horsepower rating, so an online estimate should not be treated as Kawasaki’s published figure.

How does the 2022 KLR650 ride?
RevZilla reviewer Spurgeon Dunbar rode the motorcycle on highways, paved two-lane roads, dirt roads, and two-track in New Mexico, and continued riding for nearly 1,700 miles. He described stable highway behavior and smooth fuel injection across elevation changes from sea level to roughly 10,000 feet. Those are one reviewer’s observations, not a guarantee of identical results for every rider or route.

Dunbar also found limited passing reserve, suspension limits when ridden hard, slower turn-in, and off-road footpeg ergonomics he disliked. His overall framing was: “The KLR650 is not a performance dual-sport motorcycle. It’s a lightweight, touring ADV machine.” The distinction is useful when weighing its touring stability and broad dirt-road ability against demands for brisk acceleration or aggressive off-road riding.
Fuel economy and range: one ride report
In that 2021 RevZilla ride report, Dunbar recorded 287 miles after using six gallons—roughly 48 mpg—with substantial open-highway riding. This is a single reviewer’s route observation, not an EPA rating or standardized fuel-economy test, and it should not be used as a guaranteed range. Kawasaki lists 6.1 gallons of fuel capacity.

ABS behavior
The optional ABS was described as off-road optimized, but the RevZilla review says the rider cannot switch it off using a normal rider control. The reviewer mentions pulling a fuse as a workaround; that is not presented here as a recommended procedure. Riders considering off-road use should understand the ABS behavior for the specific motorcycle and consult its owner’s manual.

A current used-price range is not established here. The original MSRP is useful historical context, but it cannot tell you what a particular motorcycle is worth today. For a meaningful estimate, compare dated local listings for the same trim and ABS configuration, then account for mileage, title status, modifications, condition, and geography. Keep advertised asking prices separate from confirmed sale prices.

Who is the 2022 KLR650 best suited to?
The KLR650’s specifications and the cited ride review point to a motorcycle aimed at riders who value fuel capacity, highway stability, comfort, and the ability to cover dirt roads at moderate pace. A buyer choosing among adventure and dual-sport motorcycles should compare the intended pace and terrain, passing power, suspension and braking demands, ABS behavior, seat height, weight, tank capacity, equipment, and price—not displacement alone.
Cycle News noted that the 2022 update retained the basic 650 cc single and five-speed layout, while RevZilla discussed the Yamaha Ténéré 700 as a more capable but more expensive comparison. Cycle News also named the Honda XR650L and Suzuki DR650S as alternatives in its period coverage; its availability comments date to 2021 and do not establish present-day availability.
