General Motors estimated 1,000 horsepower and 329 miles of range in April 2022, but independent testing showed the trade-offs behind those headline numbers: enormous acceleration, a 211-foot stop from 70 mph in one publication’s test, and sharply reduced range while towing. It is a specialist vehicle whose size, price and energy use matter as much as its capability.
What the 2022 Hummer EV Edition 1 was
The first Hummer EV pickup arrived as the high-spec Edition 1, an electric halo truck rather than a conventional, broadly configured work pickup. In its October 2020 first look, MotorTrend described the full-size electric pickup as initially launching in Edition 1 form, with a reveal-era starting price of $112,595 and planned sales before the end of 2021. GM TechLink later described the 2022 Edition 1 as GM’s first truck designed around an EV propulsion system. The engineering premise was distinctive: battery power and multiple motors could provide dramatic acceleration and fine low-speed control, while rear-wheel steering, CrabWalk, height-adjustable suspension and removable roof panels gave the truck an unusually broad off-road identity. The same package remained physically imposing and expensive.

How fast is the Hummer EV Edition 1?
It is very quick for a full-size pickup. GM estimated approximately three seconds from 0 to 60 mph using Watts to Freedom, its launch-oriented driving mode. Car and Driver recorded 3.3 seconds in its own test. The two figures are not contradictory: one is a manufacturer estimate and the other is a publication’s measured result under its test conditions. Neither should be read as a promise that every driver, surface, battery state or weather condition will produce the same time.

That acceleration is only part of the road-going picture. Car and Driver measured a 211-foot stopping distance from 70 mph and reported brake fade during repeated braking runs. How far can the 2022 Hummer EV go on a charge?
GM’s April 2022 estimate was 329 miles on a full charge. Car and Driver reports that the EPA estimates were 47 MPGe combined, and its own 75-mph highway range test returned 290 miles. These are different measures: the GM figure is a manufacturer estimate, the EPA figures are standardized efficiency ratings, and the 290-mile result is a publication’s steady-speed road test. Towing makes the gap between headline range and trip planning especially important. In Car and Driver’s 70-mph towing test with a 6,100-pound trailer, the Hummer EV covered 140 miles. That is a specific test result, not a universal towing-range prediction. Trailer shape and load, weather, road grade and speed all affect consumption, and a towing trip can require more frequent charging stops than the truck’s unladen range suggests. GM listed 800-volt architecture and 350-kW DC fast-charging capability. A maximum capability is not a promise that every charging stop will deliver that power: the charger must be compatible, and charging performance varies with conditions and battery state. For regular use, home charging can make daily replenishment more convenient; long-distance travel and towing still depend on access to suitable public DC fast chargers along the route.

What Extract Mode and CrabWalk can—and cannot—do
Extract Mode
Extract Mode raises the truck on its suspension to provide up to 15.9 inches of ground clearance, compared with GM’s 10.1 inches standard and 11.9 inches in Terrain Mode. GM tied the 32-inch water-fording figure to Extract Mode as well. These are specialized capability figures, not a reason to assume the truck can safely clear any obstacle or ford any water at that depth; route conditions and the vehicle’s setup still matter. CrabWalk and rear-wheel steering
CrabWalk uses the rear-wheel steering system to angle the rear wheels in the same direction as the fronts, letting the truck move diagonally at low speed. It can help reposition a long vehicle on a tight trail, but GM limits it to low speeds. It is a maneuvering aid for specific situations, not a replacement for choosing a suitable line, judging clearance or controlling speed. Other trail and open-air equipment
The Edition 1 paired the electric drivetrain with removable roof panels and trail-oriented controls. The removable panels reinforce the Hummer’s recreational character, while its size remains a practical constraint on narrow trails, parking and everyday maneuvering. The appeal is an unusual combination—open-air driving, substantial ground-clearance potential and low-speed steering tricks—rather than a claim that the truck is small or easy to place everywhere.

The Hummer EV is best compared by configuration and use, not by a single range or power headline. The figures below come from different kinds of evidence and should not be treated as a perfectly like-for-like model-year comparison. Car and Driver names the Rivian R1T and Ford F-150 Lightning as relevant alternatives and reports maximum tow ratings of 11,000 and 10,000 pounds, respectively, against 7,500 pounds for the GMC. Confirm the model year and configuration before applying any rating to a particular truck.

On the evidence available here, the Hummer’s clearest distinction is its combination of extravagant performance and specialized off-road hardware, not maximum towing capacity or efficiency. The Rivian and Ford can be more compelling starting points if the buyer’s priority is a higher published tow rating, while choosing among actual trims requires checking their model-year range, charging, equipment and pricing directly.
Practical drawbacks: size, efficiency and packaging
Motor Authority’s brief drive account emphasized the truck’s large footprint, five-foot bed and cabin packaging. The author explicitly did not get a chance to charge the vehicle during that limited drive, so the account is useful for physical context but not evidence of charging speed or charging convenience. The Hummer’s footprint affects more than parking. Its mass is part of the reason acceleration feels dramatic, but Car and Driver’s braking and road-behavior observations show why the same mass deserves attention. Its EPA efficiency estimates—47 MPGe combined, as reported by Car and Driver—also underline that this is not an efficiency-first electric pickup. Add a six-figure reveal-era launch price and a 7,500-pound maximum tow rating, and the Edition 1 makes most sense for buyers who specifically value its presence, performance and trail features.
Who should consider a 2022 Hummer EV?
- Consider it if you want an unusually powerful, distinctive electric truck with removable roof panels and low-speed off-road systems that stand apart from ordinary pickups.
- Plan carefully if you expect frequent towing or long highway trips: use route-specific charging plans and account for the large range reduction seen in Car and Driver’s particular towing test.
- Look elsewhere first if tight urban parking, maximum towing capacity, efficiency, or lower acquisition cost matters more than the Hummer’s specialized character.
