The 2022 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 pairs a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and rear-wheel drive. Ford rated it at 760 horsepower on 93-octane fuel. Its U.S. starting MSRP was $72,900 before destination and gas-guzzler tax; that historical sticker price is not a measure of what a used GT500 costs today.
What the 2022 Shelby GT500 is
This article covers the U.S.-market 2022 model year, not every Mustang wearing a Shelby badge. Ford’s factory GT500 is distinct from later or earlier GT500 generations and from Shelby American conversions such as Code Red and GT500KR. Those conversions are discussed separately below.
Car and Driver characterizes the GT500 as both an exceptionally powerful Mustang and a usable road car. That is a publication’s assessment, not a promise that every owner will find its ride, running costs, or track-focused equipment suitable for daily use. The sources available here do not establish a complete independent test dataset for acceleration, braking, or lap times, so no such figures are presented.

The GT500’s transmission is a dual-clutch automatic; Car and Driver says it is not offered with a manual. The quoted output figures are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results.

What it is like on road and track
The combination of a supercharged V8, rear-wheel drive, and dual-clutch transmission makes the GT500 a high-performance road car with hardware suited to demanding use. Ford’s supplement lists front cooling ducts, MagneRide dampers, and substantial Brembo brakes. Those components describe the equipment; they do not by themselves establish a particular lap time or guarantee that the car is comfortable for every commute.
Tire fitment depends on configuration. Ford’s supplement associates Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires with the GT500 and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires with the Carbon Fiber Track Pack. Check the specific car’s equipment and installed tires rather than assuming every GT500 has the same setup.

Carbon Fiber Track Pack and Heritage Edition
Carbon Fiber Track Pack
The Carbon Fiber Track Pack changes equipment, including tire fitment, and Car and Driver notes that it materially increases the purchase cost. The sources cited here do not establish a complete option price or a reliable total for a particular build. Confirm the original window sticker and current configuration when evaluating an individual car.
Heritage Edition
Ford announced the 2022 Heritage Edition as a limited-edition appearance package in Brittany Blue, with Wimbledon White or Absolute Black stripes. Code Orange paint was also available, according to Car and Driver. Ford’s November 12, 2021 announcement priced the Heritage package with vinyl stripes at an additional $2,140, or $12,140 with hand-painted stripes. Those are period manufacturer prices, not evidence of a current resale premium.

Ford announced a U.S. starting MSRP of $72,900 for the 2022 GT500, excluding $1,195 destination and a $2,600 gas-guzzler tax. These are original manufacturer prices announced November 12, 2021. They should not be read as current asking prices or a present-day valuation. Current used prices vary by condition, mileage, configuration, location, and market timing; no dated listing or valuation data is established here.
Ford factory GT500 versus Shelby American conversions
“Shelby GT500” can refer to the factory Ford model or to a separately modified car. Keep the two clear when comparing photos, power claims, and prices: Shelby American’s figures below describe its own conversion packages, not Ford’s factory specifications.

Photos can show the car’s appearance but may not establish its model year, option package, or whether it is stock. When reviewing an image, look for a caption that identifies the 2022 model year and names the Heritage Edition or Carbon Fiber Track Pack if applicable. Code Red and GT500KR images depict Shelby American conversions, not an unmodified factory GT500. Use the original window sticker or vehicle records to verify equipment.

Ownership and service details
Ford’s 2022 U.S. supplement contains model-specific operating and service information. It says the GT500 is not approved for trailer towing and recommends flatbed towing; owners should follow the applicable manual and professional transport guidance.
The supplement lists Motorcraft parts for the 5.2-liter engine, including air filter FA-1922, oil filter FL-2087, and spark plugs SP-581. It warns that using a non-listed oil filter could cause engine damage. Verify parts by VIN and model and follow current Ford guidance rather than treating a part number as universal.
