Why does Farley say EVs are still important to Ford?
In a February 2026 interview with Car and Driver, Farley framed EVs as a way for Ford to improve its ability to compete in future vehicle segments. Rather than treating electrification only as a question of which powertrain is most profitable today, he argued that developing new kinds of vehicles can build the innovation and expertise Ford will need to compete.
He also questioned whether concentrating on conventional compact cars would be enough. Farley said Chinese automakers were putting their strongest people on low-cost vehicles that are partly or fully electric. In his view, Ford has to develop the capabilities to compete in that space instead of assuming that established product categories will protect it.
What powertrains does Ford intend to offer?
Farley said Ford intends to offer customers a mix of pure battery EVs, extended-range EVs (EREVs) and hybrids. He acknowledged that a pure EV may not always be Ford’s most profitable answer, but argued that the company should still offer one alongside other electrified choices.

The strategy is not a claim that one powertrain suits every buyer. It is a commitment to maintain more than one route to electrification while Ford works out how to compete on cost and product appeal.

What does Farley say Ford learned from Tesla?
Farley described a teardown comparison that, he said, showed Ford how much room it had to improve EV engineering. Comparing the Mustang Mach-E’s wiring harness with Tesla’s, he said Ford’s was 70 pounds heavier and 1.6 kilometers longer. Those figures are Farley’s account of the comparison in the interview, not an independently verified test result.
His broader point was that EV competitiveness depends on engineering efficiency, not just on launching an electric model. Farley also said Chinese automakers and local brands advanced faster than Ford expected, naming BYD, Great Wall and Geely as examples. He argued that competing with them requires new technical know-how and different skills inside Ford.

How is Ford preparing for Chinese competition?
Reuters reported on July 30, 2026, that Ford was preparing a family of affordable EVs designed to match Chinese companies on cost and efficiency. Reuters also reported that Farley told Ford employees the company was preparing for the possibility that Chinese automakers could enter the U.S. market in five to ten years, with entry more likely toward the later end of that range.
Reuters based its account of the private town hall on three people who viewed it; Ford declined to comment on the meeting. The timeframe is Farley’s reported forecast, not a confirmed entry date or evidence that Chinese brands will definitely enter the U.S. market. The report describes Ford’s planning, rather than a completed product lineup or a published cost comparison.

What does “China dominates” mean in this context?
Here, “China dominates” describes the competitive pressure highlighted by Farley and the article’s framing; it is not a quantified global market-share finding. The available reporting documents Farley’s assessment of Chinese companies’ pace, affordability focus and technical progress, but does not independently measure their overall global EV dominance or compare all automakers on a common basis.
Farley’s case is therefore strategic: Ford should keep developing EVs and the engineering capabilities behind them, offer multiple electrified powertrains, and prepare affordable products for a possible future contest with Chinese rivals in the United States. The sources establish Ford’s stated direction and reported planning, not whether those plans will succeed.
