The 2021 Lexus NX 300 is a quiet, comfortable luxury compact SUV with a turbocharged gasoline engine and a useful set of standard safety features. Its clearest drawbacks are limited cargo room and an infotainment touchpad that can be frustrating to use. The “best-selling” claim needs a regional qualifier: Lexus UK said the NX had been its best-selling model in the UK for six years, not that it led every SUV or every market.
What “best-selling” means for the Lexus NX
Lexus UK reported in June 2021 that the NX had been the brand’s best-selling model in the UK for the previous six years, with more than 27,000 cumulative UK sales. The company also reported more than 170,000 European sales since the NX launched in 2014. Those are historical, regional figures; they do not establish that the NX was the best-selling SUV overall or Lexus’s top seller in every country. Lexus UK’s June 2021 announcement gives the scope of those claims.
Which 2021 NX 300 is this review about?
This review focuses on the U.S.-market 2021 NX 300, the gasoline model. It is not the NX 300h, which is a separate hybrid powertrain. Lexus lists the NX 300’s 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder at 235 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. These figures are specific to the 2021 U.S. model; equipment and specifications can vary by year, market and configuration. How the NX 300 drives and rides
Edmunds describes the 2021 NX 300 as quiet and comfortable, with a supple ride. Its performance and driver engagement, by contrast, are judged average for the luxury compact SUV class. Edmunds recorded a 0–60 mph time of 7.0 seconds and gave the vehicle an expert score of 7.0 out of 10; those are that publication’s test result and assessment, not a guarantee for every vehicle or a universal consensus. Edmunds lists 17.7 cubic feet of cargo capacity behind the rear seats. The reviewer considers the NX’s cargo capacity limited compared with some rivals, so shoppers who regularly carry bulky luggage, sports gear or family equipment should check whether the space works for their needs.
Touchpad interface
The Remote Touchpad is a notable usability drawback in Edmunds’ review, which characterizes it as frustrating. Lexus’ 2021 materials list an eight-inch display, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto among standard features, with multimedia and navigation options available. The presence of smartphone integration does not remove the touchpad concern; try the interface in the specific vehicle before buying.

Fuel economy: EPA estimate and Edmunds test
For the all-wheel-drive configuration covered in Edmunds’ review, the EPA estimate is 24 mpg combined, with 22 mpg city and 27 mpg highway. Edmunds also recorded 25.7 mpg on its own highway-heavy evaluation loop. That is one test result under those conditions, not a promise of typical fuel economy for every driver, route or NX 300 configuration. The Edmunds review reports both figures.
Safety and equipment for the 2021 U.S. model
Lexus said blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert became standard on 2021 U.S. NX models, alongside Lexus Safety System+ 2.0. The manufacturer also listed optional parking assist and an available power back door. Because equipment can differ by trim, options, market and model year, verify the window sticker or equipment on the individual vehicle rather than assuming every NX has the same features. Who should consider the NX 300?
The NX 300 makes the strongest case for buyers who value a quiet, comfortable ride and want the 2021 model’s stated standard safety equipment. The compromises matter most to shoppers prioritizing generous cargo capacity, a simpler infotainment control scheme, stronger acceleration or a more engaging drive. Compare specific vehicles on cabin comfort, rear-seat usability, cargo room, interface ease, fuel economy by drivetrain and included safety equipment; the right choice depends on which of those matters most to you.

A review cannot determine the condition, maintenance history or recall status of an individual used vehicle. Check the VIN through the relevant regulator or manufacturer recall lookup, review service and accident records, and have the vehicle inspected. Confirm its drivetrain and equipment from the vehicle documents, especially if comparing it with an NX 300h or another model year.
