Is the 2023 M2 faster than the 2021 M2 Competition?
BMW’s published output figures show that the G87 has 48 more horsepower, while both cars are rated at 406 lb-ft of torque. BMW’s October 2022 launch release describes the G87’s S58 engine as producing 453 hp at 6,250 rpm and says it exceeds its predecessor by 48 hp. The 2018 M2 Competition release lists 405 hp between 5,230 and 7,000 rpm. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements.

How do the transmissions compare?
Both cars offer a standard six-speed manual and send power to the rear wheels. The automatic choices are not the same: the F87’s optional dual-clutch M DCT is replaced in the G87 lineup by an available eight-speed M Steptronic automatic. A buyer comparing automatic versions should treat them as different transmission types, rather than assume the newer car carries over the older gearbox.

Is the G87 M2 bigger?
Yes. BMW lists the 2023 G87 at 180.3 inches long, 74.3 inches wide and 55.2 inches high, with a 108.1-inch wheelbase. BMW says it is 4.1 inches longer and 1.3 inches wider than the preceding M2, with a wheelbase 2.1 inches longer. Those changes describe a larger exterior footprint; dimensions alone do not establish how either car feels to drive or how much usable cabin or cargo space it offers.
What technology does the 2023 M2 add?
BMW’s G87 launch release describes a curved display running iDrive 8 and standard M Drive Professional. The latter includes Drift Analyzer and 10-position M Traction Control. These are notable equipment-generation changes from the older F87, but a feature list does not by itself establish usability, reliability or which system a driver will prefer.

Which one makes more sense for you?
- Consider the 2021 M2 Competition if the F87’s smaller dimensions, optional M DCT or lower original base MSRP are central to your comparison. The MSRP is historical, not a guide to current asking prices.
- Consider the 2023 M2 if you want the newer cabin technology, the higher published horsepower rating and the larger body, while still having a manual-transmission option.
