The 2020 Mercedes-Benz SL Grand Edition was a U.S.-market appearance and equipment edition offered as both the SL 450 and SL 550—not a separate engine model. Its defining touches included Graphite Grey paint, staggered black AMG forged wheels, distinctive designo leather and a sports suspension lowered by 10 mm. The SL 450 paired a biturbo V6 with a lower original MSRP; the SL 550 brought a more powerful V8.
What is the 2020 SL Grand Edition?
The Grand Edition was a special version of the R231-generation Mercedes-Benz SL roadster. Mercedes-Benz USA announced U.S. dealership arrival for 2020, and its 2020 model-year guide lists two versions: SL 450 Grand Edition and SL 550 Grand Edition. The R231 generation ran from 2012 through 2020, according to Mercedes-Benz’s SL history overview.
In the United States, Grand Edition identifies appearance and equipment distinctions within those two SL models; it does not mean a third powertrain. Mercedes-Benz’s launch announcement describes the edition’s U.S. arrival and features in its February 19, 2019 announcement.
What makes the U.S. Grand Edition distinctive?
Exterior and wheels
Mercedes-Benz specified Graphite Grey exterior paint, with high-gloss chrome and matte-silver applications on the front bumper. The staggered wheels are 19-inch units at the front and 20-inch at the rear: AMG 10-spoke forged wheels in high-gloss black, with a high-sheen rim lip and spokes. Grand Edition badges sit on the front fenders. These are factory-description details, not a guarantee that every used example retains its original wheels, paint or trim.

Suspension and equipment
The Grand Edition has sports suspension lowered by 10 mm with firmer tuning, according to Mercedes-Benz USA. That is an edition feature; it should not be confused with optional chassis equipment elsewhere in the SL range.

The 2020 U.S. guide highlights a retractable hardtop with panorama roof, 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission, LED Intelligent Light System, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, Active Brake Assist, KEYLESS-GO and harman/kardon LOGIC7 surround sound among the standard features. It lists MAGIC SKY CONTROL, Active Body Control with CURVE function, a Driver Assistance Package and Bang & Olufsen BeoSound as optional highlights. AIRSCARF is specifically associated with the SL 550 in that guide; do not assume it is standard on both variants. Equipment can vary by market and individual vehicle, so a particular car’s build sheet is the better reference.
SL 450 vs. SL 550: U.S. specifications and original prices
The figures below are Mercedes-Benz USA’s published 2020 model-year specifications in its June 21, 2019 quick reference guide. They are factory specifications, not independent test results. Original MSRPs exclude the guide’s stated $995 delivery and destination charge.

These fuel-economy figures are those printed in the period guide, not a promise of present-day or real-world consumption. The original MSRPs describe new-car pricing for the 2020 U.S. model year; they are not current used-market values. The source for the specifications, equipment highlights and original prices is Mercedes-Benz USA’s 2020 quick reference guide.
Which U.S. version is the better fit?
- SL 450: The V6 version had lower output and a lower original MSRP. The period guide lists 4.9 seconds to 60 mph and higher fuel-economy figures than the SL 550.
- SL 550: The V8 version delivered 87 more horsepower and 147 lb-ft more torque than the SL 450, along with the quicker published 0–60 mph time. Its original MSRP was higher.
Those are differences in the published specifications and prices, not a present-day buying recommendation. For a specific used car, verify its market, VIN, equipment and condition rather than relying on a model name alone.

Why market matters: U.S. SL 450/550 and German SL 400/500
Mercedes-Benz used different model names and published different specifications for Germany. Its 2019 German announcement covers the SL 400 Grand Edition and SL 500 Grand Edition, not the U.S. SL 450 and SL 550. It lists 367 PS and 500 Nm for the SL 400, and 455 PS and 700 Nm for the SL 500; the stated 0–100 km/h times are 4.9 and 4.3 seconds, respectively, with electronically limited top speeds of 250 km/h. Those metric-market figures should not be substituted for the U.S. table.
The German announcement also gives fuel consumption and CO₂ figures under the then-applicable NEDC framework and German starting prices including VAT. Those prices and emissions figures are specific to Germany and that historical measurement context, not current U.S. pricing or directly comparable current ratings. German equipment listings include AIRSCARF, active multicontour seats with massage and dynamic functions, seat climate control, a driver assistance package plus and active parking assist; availability should not be assumed for a U.S.-market vehicle. What to verify on a used SL Grand Edition
- Confirm the car’s original market and whether it is an SL 450 or SL 550; the Grand Edition name alone does not establish its engine or specification.
- Check the VIN-specific build sheet for factory options and equipment, especially features whose availability differed by model or market.
- Inspect the paint, badges, wheels, leather and suspension against the factory description. A used car may have been modified, repaired or fitted with replacement parts.
- Check current value, warranty or recall status, and parts compatibility using current, vehicle-specific information. These details depend on the date, VIN, condition and market; the original MSRP is not a valuation.
