The 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee is a five-passenger midsize SUV that can range from a comfortable daily driver to a well-equipped off-road or towing vehicle. That breadth is its strength—and the reason a used example needs to be judged by its exact engine, drivetrain, suspension and option package, not just its trim badge.
What the 2020 Grand Cherokee offers
The lineup has seven principal trims: Laredo, Limited, Trailhawk, Overland, Summit, SRT and Trackhawk. Most versions were offered with rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive; Trailhawk is 4WD-only, while SRT and Trackhawk use specialized all-wheel-drive systems. Edmunds summarizes the trim and drivetrain range in its 2020 Grand Cherokee trims comparison.
That makes the Grand Cherokee unusually broad in character for a midsize SUV. A rear-drive V6 example is a different proposition from a Trailhawk equipped for rough terrain or a V8 model set up for heavier towing. Trim names alone do not establish which equipment a particular used vehicle has.
How the 4WD and suspension systems differ
Jeep’s official 2020 feature-availability specifications distinguish the available systems rather than treating all 4WD models alike:

- Quadra-Drive II: Adds an electronic limited-slip differential at the rear axle.
- Quadra-Lift: An available air suspension with five modes and a stated total of 4.1 inches of lift. Availability depends on trim and package; the specifications list it as standard on 4×4 Overland and Summit models and available with the Off-Road Adventure Group II.
If off-road use is a priority, confirm the system and package on the specific vehicle. A 4WD badge does not tell you whether it has Quadra-Drive II, Quadra-Lift or other desired equipment.
Engines, towing and fuel use
Car and Driver’s 2020 review characterizes the V6 as smooth and adequate for everyday driving, while the V8 provides more towing capacity at the cost of greater fuel use. The review reports maximum towing figures of 6,200 pounds for V6 models and 7,200 pounds with the V8. Treat these as review-reported configuration figures, not a guarantee for every used Grand Cherokee: check the exact vehicle’s ratings, owner information and fitted tow equipment, and account for the load and trailer.

In Car and Driver’s V6 test, the SUV returned 25 mpg on the publication’s highway loop, matching the 25-mpg EPA highway rating cited in that review. That is a specific test result, not a promise of real-world economy; driving conditions, vehicle condition and configuration affect what an owner will see.
Cabin comfort, cargo and infotainment
The cabin can feel more rugged or more upscale depending on trim. Car and Driver notes soft-touch materials in prominent areas, alongside harder plastics in some parts of the interior. Its cargo test fit 11 carry-on cases behind the second row and 24 with the rear seats stowed—useful context for the space, though luggage shape and packing affect what fits.

The review finds the Uconnect infotainment system responsive and easy to use, and recommends the available 8.4-inch display over the standard 5-inch screen. Premium audio and rear-seat entertainment also depend on trim or package. For a used-car inspection, verify the screen and equipment actually installed rather than assuming they came with a particular badge.
Safety equipment is not uniform across the range
Driver-assistance features vary with trim and package. Car and Driver describes an optional Active Safety package that includes adaptive cruise control, automated emergency braking, forward-collision warning, lane-keeping assist and parking assistance; those features should not be assumed to be present on every 2020 model.

The same review reports poor performance in IIHS small-overlap front-crash tests. Because safety equipment and vehicle records are specific to the exact configuration, check the used vehicle’s fitted features and consult current vehicle-specific safety records before buying.

- Identify the powertrain and drivetrain. Confirm the engine and whether the vehicle is rear-wheel drive, 4WD or one of the SRT/Trackhawk AWD configurations.
- Match capability to your use. For towing, verify the individual vehicle’s ratings and equipment. For off-road driving, confirm the actual 4WD system and whether Quadra-Lift or relevant packages are fitted.
- Check comfort and technology equipment in person. Confirm the infotainment screen size, audio system and any rear-seat entertainment rather than relying on a trim label.
- Verify safety features and records. Check which driver-assistance features are installed and consult records for the specific vehicle.
