When shopping for a used 2020 Hyundai Palisade, check the specific vehicle’s recall status by VIN, test its windshield wipers, ask whether it has tow-hitch wiring, and review its oil and transmission history. Owner comments mention oil consumption, a transmission replacement, and a check-engine light, but they do not show how often these problems occur or establish the condition of the Palisade you are considering.
Start with the vehicle’s recall status
Recall records identify defined safety concerns affecting particular vehicles; they do not mean every Palisade has the issue or that a particular vehicle still needs repair. Use the candidate vehicle’s 17-character VIN in NHTSA’s recall lookup, then ask the seller for paperwork documenting completed work. NHTSA says the lookup shows unrepaired recalls associated with a VIN and that recall repairs are free through the automaker’s local dealership. A model-year recall list is not a substitute for checking the individual vehicle.
Check the windshield wipers
Recall 22V-627 covers certain 2020–2021 Palisades produced from April 10, 2019, through November 30, 2020. Hyundai Motor America’s Part 573 report filed with NHTSA estimated 122,949 potentially involved vehicles and said 1% of the population had the defect. Snow or ice between the driver-side wiper arm and cowl could activate the motor’s circuit breaker, making the wipers intermittent or temporarily inoperative and reducing visibility. NHTSA’s later recall record describes a redesigned driver-side wiper arm as the remedy and a subsequent recall involving certain later Palisades. What to test at the viewing
- Run the wipers at every speed and check intermittent operation.
- Test the washer spray.
- Look for visible wiper-arm damage or signs that repair work may be incomplete, and ask for the repair record.
These checks can reveal an obvious functional concern, but they do not confirm that a recall repair was completed or detect every possible defect.

Ask about tow-hitch wiring
NHTSA’s August 23, 2022 alert warned that moisture entering the harness module on certain accessory tow-hitch wiring could cause an electrical short and fire while driving or while parked. The alert identified 245,030 potentially involved 2020–2022 Palisades in recall 22V-633. NHTSA described an interim dealer inspection and possible fuse removal while a repair was developed. Whether this applies depends on the vehicle’s equipment and VIN; do not assume every Palisade has the accessory or an open recall. Review oil use, engine condition, and transmission behavior
Consumer Reports’ 2020 Palisade page shows owner comments describing excessive oil consumption, a dealer-replaced transmission, and a check-engine-light concern. These are individual owner reports, not a controlled estimate of how common the issues are, proof of a model-wide defect, or a diagnosis of the car for sale. Consumer Reports also shows five NHTSA recalls for the model year; that is a model-page count, not the number of open recalls on an individual vehicle. Questions and checks for the seller
- Ask for oil-change and repair records, and whether the owner has needed to add oil between services.
- Check the oil level and look for visible leaks.
- During a test drive, pay attention to abnormal shifting, unusual engine noise, or warning lights.
- Ask for documentation of any engine or transmission diagnosis, repair, or replacement.
- Treat inconsistent maintenance records or unexplained symptoms as reasons for further diagnosis by a qualified mechanic.
An OBD-II reader may help investigate a warning light, but a code reader cannot establish the overall condition of the engine, transmission, or safety systems. It is one inspection aid, not a substitute for a qualified mechanic’s assessment.
