The 2020 Ferrari 488 GT3 Evo was an evolution of the 488 GT3 focused on aerodynamic stability, tyre use, controls, safety and endurance usability—not more engine power. Ferrari unveiled it at Mugello’s Finali Mondiali in October 2019 for competition in 2020. The twin-turbo V8 and its components were unchanged, while Ferrari revised the car around it.
What changed on the Ferrari 488 GT3 Evo?
Ferrari said the Evo’s development addressed aerodynamics, vehicle dynamics, ergonomics, safety and reliability within FIA limits on power and aerodynamic efficiency. The manufacturer reported more than 18,000 hours of calculations and CFD simulations before wind-tunnel testing; that figure describes Ferrari’s development effort, not an independent performance test. (Ferrari, October 2019)
Reworked front aerodynamics
The Evo received a new front bumper and associated aerodynamic revisions. Ferrari described flicks and turning vanes as ways to add downforce and improve stability without changing the aerodynamic balance. The package also included larger vents in the front wings, a more tapered front-door section and revised rear-wing vents. Those effects are Ferrari’s stated aims, not independently measured results.
Longer wheelbase and revised controls
Ferrari lengthened the wheelbase, as it had on the 488 GTE, saying the change was intended to make better use of the tyres, reduce wear and facilitate conversion from GT3 to GTE specification. The company also said weight reduction left room for more ballast to meet the minimum weight set under Balance of Performance, allowing that ballast to be positioned to lower the centre of gravity.

Traction control, ABS and other vehicle-dynamics controls were optimized. Ferrari also introduced new engine management, aimed at improving reliability and making torque delivery smoother and more precise.
What stayed the same: the engine
The Evo retained the 488 GT3’s twin-turbocharged V8 with a 90-degree angle between cylinder banks. Ferrari explicitly said it made no engine performance upgrades and modified no engine components. The new engine-management system was a calibration and reliability change, not a claimed increase in power.

Safety, cockpit and endurance equipment
Seat and restraints
Ferrari introduced a seat developed with Sabelt for GT3 and GTE cars to meet new FIA safety regulations, alongside revised belts and buckle. Ferrari said the seat was 2.4 kg lighter than the preceding seat. This is the manufacturer’s comparison from its 2019 announcement.
Optional 24H/Endurance package
Ferrari described an optional package for endurance use that included a front bumper with additional headlights, quick-fill couplings for engine oil and coolant, a carbon-fibre clutch, GTE-derived brake calipers and steel wheel nuts. Optional additions included coolant-level and refuelling-completion sensors with warning lights, plus Le Mans-type LED main headlights rated at 4,500 lumens. These were period equipment details; the announcement does not establish present-day parts availability.

Could an older 488 GT3 be upgraded to Evo specification?
Ferrari said in October 2019 that the new components and improvements would also be offered as upgrade kits for existing cars. That establishes the manufacturer’s period offer, not whether kits or individual parts remain available today. Buyers or teams considering a conversion should confirm current supply, compatibility and eligibility directly with Ferrari or an authorized race-car service provider.
What the 2020 FIA Balance of Performance table said
The FIA’s Balance of Performance document dated 29 May 2020 lists the Ferrari 488 GT3, version 32/02 EVO, as valid from January 2020. Its table gives a 1,260 kg weight, 40 kg committee weight and 1,300 kg minimum weight, alongside boost-pressure limits by engine speed. These are figures from that dated 2020 regulatory snapshot, not a universal setup specification or a statement of current event rules. (FIA, 29 May 2020)

Early competition results
In March 2020, Ferrari reported that the 488 GT3 had reached 500 podiums in 547 participations, counting both overall and class rankings. The same report said the Evo had already won the 4 Hours of Buriram with HubAuto Corsa drivers Tim Slade, Marcos Gomes and Liam Talbot, in a result Ferrari connected with the team’s Asian Le Mans Series championship. These are historical figures and claims reported by Ferrari, not independently verified totals. (Ferrari, March 2020)
Do not confuse the GT3 Evo with other 488 race cars
The 488 GT3 Evo 2020 was Ferrari’s revised GT3 competition car for the 2020 season. It is distinct from the 488 Challenge Evo, which belongs to Ferrari’s one-make Challenge racing series, and the 488 GTE, a separate endurance-racing model. Ferrari’s references to the GTE in the Evo announcement describe shared development points such as the longer wheelbase and conversion considerations; they do not make the GT3 Evo a GTE.
