The documented 2002 Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR is a Roadster, not a verified “Super Sport” variant. Petersen Automotive Museum identifies its example as a 6.9-litre V12 Roadster rated at 612 hp, but that record does not establish a distinct Super Sport specification or connect the label to a particular chassis. The CLK-GTR began as a GT1 race car; its road version was built to meet homologation requirements.
Is there a 2002 Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR Super Sport?
The exact model name “2002 Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR Super Sport” is not confirmed by the manufacturer and museum sources cited here. Petersen Automotive Museum documents a 2002 CLK-GTR Roadster, chassis C 297, with a 6.9-litre V12 and 612 hp. It does not call the car a Super Sport.
Classic Driver describes a road-car account with 622 hp, while secondary accounts also associate the “SuperSport” designation with a small number of coupes and a prototype fitted with a 7.3-litre engine. The available manufacturer, museum and vehicle-record sources do not verify that engine claim or establish that it applies to the Petersen Roadster. Those figures should not be treated as specifications for the exact car named in the title. Classic Driver Market’s road-car description is a specialist-market source, not chassis-level confirmation.
How the CLK-GTR went from GT1 racing to the road
The CLK-GTR was first a Mercedes-AMG GT1 racing car. Mercedes-Benz Media Newsroom USA reports that AMG Motorsport designed it in 128 days. The road-going version followed to satisfy the GT1 program’s homologation requirements, as described by the Petersen Automotive Museum.

Mercedes-AMG says the racing engine was derived from the 6.0-litre V12 used in the Mercedes-Benz S 600. Its historical racing-car figures are 6.9 litres, up to 450 kW (612 hp) at 6,800 rpm and 775 Nm at 5,250 rpm. These are racing-version specifications, not proof that every road car—or a Super Sport variant—shared that output. The museum separately lists 612 hp for its displayed Roadster; the matching number alone does not establish identical specifications.
What the racing record says
Mercedes-Benz Media Newsroom USA credits the CLK-GTR with six race wins and the drivers’ championship in 1997. For 1998, it attributes the sweep of all eleven FIA-GT races to the CLK-GTR and its V8-powered successor, the CLK-LM, together—not to the CLK-GTR alone. See the newsroom’s Mercedes-AMG history account.

What is known about the road-going cars?
The museum describes the road cars as retaining the racing car’s carbon-fiber monocoque chassis and suspension, with a more civilized interior. It says the road-car V12 grew from 6.0 to 6.9 litres. Its displayed 2002 Roadster record specifies 612 hp, but that individual record should not be generalized into a confirmed Super Sport specification.
Mercedes-Benz Italy gives a different road-car account: its V12 version could reach 340 km/h and accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds, with a six-speed manual gearbox and ABS. These are figures published by Mercedes-Benz Italy; they are not identified as performance figures for a specific Super Sport chassis.

How many CLK-GTR road cars were built?
Published totals differ, and the sources do not explain the discrepancy. The breakdowns should therefore be read as separate published counts rather than combined into a single settled total.
| Source | Published road-car total | Breakdown |
|---|---|---|
| Petersen Automotive Museum | 28 | Two prototypes, 20 coupes and six roadsters |
| Mercedes-Benz Italy | 25 | 20 coupes and five roadsters |
The figures above come from the museum’s vehicle record and the manufacturer’s Italian classic-car page. The museum’s total includes two prototypes in its stated breakdown; the available sources do not establish whether differing counting conventions explain the one-car difference between the roadster totals.

How to describe the car accurately
- For the documented 2002 example, use “CLK-GTR Roadster,” the identity recorded by Petersen Automotive Museum.
- Attribute the museum’s 6.9-litre V12 and 612 hp figures to its displayed Roadster record.
- Keep racing specifications distinct from road-car specifications, even where an output figure matches.
- Describe “Super Sport” as an unverified designation unless reliable documentation ties it to a specific car or chassis.
