The clearest sourced maximum-speed claim here is Honda’s 270 km/h (167 mph) for the European-market 2015 Civic Type R. That is a manufacturer claim for a particular model generation—not a specification for every Civic Type R.
This distinction matters because “fastest” can mean maximum speed, acceleration, or lap time. This article treats fastest as claimed maximum speed; lap times and acceleration are separate measures. The cars discussed are road-car performance models, but a defensible 15-place list would also need each entry’s FWD layout, production status, model year, market, and comparable top-speed evidence verified.
Why a 15-car ranking would be misleading
A ranked list needs a consistent figure for every car and a clear rule for what qualifies. The available sources do not establish those details for 15 FWD sports cars. A secondary compilation can suggest candidates, but it does not provide a transparent, consistently comparable evidence trail for the order. Treating it as definitive would turn uncertain claims into an apparently authoritative ranking.
For a fair comparison, each entry needs a top-speed figure tied to a specific model year and market, plus confirmation that the car is front-wheel drive and a production road car. The source should also make clear whether the number is a manufacturer claim or an independently measured result, and whether a limiter or special-edition status affects the comparison.

Fastest by top speed, acceleration, or lap time?
- Maximum speed is the highest speed a car is claimed or measured to reach. A published figure may be a manufacturer claim rather than an independently verified test.
- Acceleration describes how quickly a car reaches a speed, often from a standstill. It does not determine its maximum speed.
- Lap time measures performance over a particular circuit under particular conditions. A faster lap does not establish a higher maximum speed.
Because the title asks for the “fastest” cars without specifying a measure, maximum speed is the most natural basis for a ranked comparison. Lap records below are useful performance context, not substitutes for top-speed data.
What the verified figures establish
2015 European-market Honda Civic Type R: a published top-speed claim
Honda’s 3 March 2015 release describes the production Civic Type R as front-wheel drive and claims a top speed of 270 km/h (167 mph), where permitted. The claim applies to the European-market car in that release; it should not be generalized to other markets, model years, or generations. Honda’s 2015 announcement presents a manufacturer figure, not an independently measured comparison against a 15-car field.

2017 Honda Civic Type R: a Nordschleife lap claim
Honda reported that the Civic Type R lapped the 12.9-mile Nürburgring Nordschleife in 7:43.80 on 3 April 2017, describing it at the time as a production FWD record. That is a circuit-performance claim, not a maximum-speed result. Honda’s 2017 announcement states the lap time and context.
2023 Honda Civic Type R: another lap-time record claim
Honda’s 20 April 2023 announcement gives the all-new Civic Type R a 7:44.881 Nordschleife lap and describes it as a FWD lap-time record under the announcement’s stated conditions. This is not directly comparable to a top-speed claim. Honda’s 2023 announcement identifies the result as a circuit record claim.

Renault Mégane R.S. Trophy-R: FWD-category lap time
Renault UK reports a 07’40’’10 Nordschleife time for the Mégane R.S. Trophy-R in the front-wheel-drive category. This is also a lap time, so it cannot determine where the car belongs in a maximum-speed ranking. Renault UK’s Trophy-R page reports the circuit figure.

Once comparable evidence is available, a useful ranking should distinguish the numbers rather than blending them into a single impression of speed.

- Rank cars by one stated metric—here, maximum speed—and label every figure as claimed or independently measured.
- Identify the model year, market, trim, FWD configuration, and whether the car is a standard production model or a limited edition.
- State limiter information where the source provides it, and preserve the source’s qualifications rather than treating a regional specification as universal.
- Keep acceleration and lap times in separate context columns; do not use either to break a top-speed tie.
- Show equal top-speed claims as a tie unless a documented, relevant tie-break is available.
With the currently established evidence, only the European-market 2015 Civic Type R has a sourced maximum-speed claim in this set. The Honda and Renault lap figures support discussion of circuit pace, but not a complete or fairly ordered list of 15 cars.
