The 2020–2022 Kawasaki Ninja 650 is a 649cc, six-speed middleweight sport motorcycle. For U.S. buyers, the key differences are original model-year MSRP, ABS and KRT trim availability, colors, and the frame description in Kawasaki’s specification sheets. Kawasaki’s reviewed materials do not give a horsepower figure or tested acceleration or top speed, so those numbers cannot be stated reliably here.
What changed from 2020 to 2022?
The core engine and general middleweight layout remained consistent across these model years, but prices, configurations, colors, and some specification-sheet wording changed. The table distinguishes original U.S. launch MSRP from today’s used asking prices.
| Model year | Original U.S. MSRP | Configurations and notes | Frame wording in Kawasaki sheet |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2020 | $7,399 starting MSRP for non-ABS | The reviewed release does not establish an ABS price. | Tubular diamond frame |
| 2021 | $7,599 non-ABS; ABS starting at $7,999 | ABS was listed at a higher starting price. | High-tensile-steel trellis frame |
| 2022 | $7,699 non-ABS; ABS starting at $8,099; ABS KRT Edition $8,299 | Includes a separately priced ABS KRT Edition. | High-tensile-steel trellis frame |
These are launch MSRPs, not current used values or out-the-door totals. Freight, dealer setup, taxes, local fees, and the specific motorcycle affect what a buyer pays. Kawasaki’s year-specific releases and specification sheets are the references for these figures: 2020 release, 2021 release, and 2022 release.
Engine, chassis, and performance
Core specifications
Kawasaki’s specification sheets describe a liquid-cooled 649cc parallel twin paired with a six-speed transmission and sealed-chain final drive. Listed configurations have a 31.1-inch seat height, 4.0-gallon fuel capacity, and 423.4-pound curb weight. These figures should be read with the model-year and configuration shown on the relevant sheet; they are not a guarantee that every trim or market specification is identical.

The 2020 sheet describes a tubular diamond frame, while the 2021 and 2022 sheets call out a high-tensile-steel trellis frame. That difference in wording is worth noting when comparing official year-specific specifications, but it does not by itself establish that every frame component or motorcycle detail changed. Kawasaki’s technical references are the 2020 specification sheet, 2021 specification sheet, 2022 specification sheet, and 2022 KRT specification sheet.
Suspension and brakes
The 2020 ABS specification sheet lists a 41mm telescopic front fork with 4.9 inches of travel and an adjustable-preload horizontal back-link rear suspension with 5.1 inches of travel. It also specifies 120/70 front and 160/60 rear tires and dual 300mm front discs with ABS. Kawasaki’s 2021 and 2022 sheets show corresponding middleweight chassis and brake equipment; use the sheet for the exact year and trim rather than assuming every component is identical.

Horsepower, acceleration, and top speed
The reviewed Kawasaki sheets do not state maximum horsepower, and they provide no instrumented acceleration or top-speed results. A precise horsepower or performance-test number is therefore not established by these sources. Published figures from other sources may use different measurement methods or configurations, so they should not be presented as a directly comparable Kawasaki specification without identifying their source and conditions.
How much does a used 2022 Ninja 650 cost?
In the reviewed Autotrader snapshot, 15 used 2022 Ninja 650 listings showed asking prices from $6,599 to $7,495, with a displayed average of about $6,982. This is one marketplace snapshot, not a transaction-value guarantee or an appraisal; the listings varied in mileage and ABS trim. The source does not establish comparable current asking-price ranges for 2020 or 2021 models. What colors did each model year come in?
Color availability depended on year and, in some cases, trim. Use a year- and edition-matched photo when identifying a bike; a current-model image may not represent a 2020–2022 colorway.
- 2020: Lime Green/Ebony KRT, Metallic Spark Black, and Pearl Blizzard White.
- 2021: Metallic Graphite Gray/Metallic Spark Black for the standard model, with additional ABS colorways in Kawasaki’s release.
- 2022: Metallic Matte Graphenesteel/Metallic Diablo Black, Pearl Robotic White/Metallic Carbon Gray, and the green KRT scheme.
Kawasaki’s releases provide year-specific product imagery and color information: 2020, 2021, and 2022. Match any image caption to the model year, edition, and color actually shown.

What to check when comparing listings
- Confirm the trim: establish whether the bike is non-ABS, ABS, or—on the 2022 lineup—ABS KRT before comparing it with an MSRP or another listing.
- Compare condition, not just model year: mileage, title status, service history, and overall condition can materially affect a used motorcycle’s asking price.
- Separate asking price from final cost: ask about freight, setup, taxes, and other local dealer fees; historic MSRP does not include a used bike’s present-day transaction terms.
- Match photos to the bike: verify year, edition, and paint scheme rather than relying on a generic Ninja 650 image.
Windshield fitment
Kawasaki lists its clear Genuine Large Windshield, part number 99994-2530, as compatible with 2020–2022 Ninja 650 and ABS models. Confirm the exact model and trim and check current inventory with Kawasaki or a dealer before ordering: Kawasaki Large Windshield fitment.
Safety
Kawasaki’s 2022 KRT specification sheet states: “Always wear a helmet, eye protection and proper apparel.”
