The 2019 Mazda CX-5 added a turbocharged engine and a new Signature trim to its second-generation lineup, while Apple CarPlay and Android Auto became available on some models. The changes broadened the CX-5’s appeal, but they do not make every 2019 example alike: engine, phone integration, comfort features and safety equipment depend on the vehicle’s trim and configuration.
What changed for the 2019 Mazda CX-5?
The 2019 model was an evolution of the CX-5 redesigned for 2017. Mazda highlighted three updates: the SKYACTIV-G 2.5T turbocharged engine, the new top-tier Signature trim and G-Vectoring Control Plus. The naturally aspirated 2.5-liter engine remained in the range. Mazda’s announcement describes these as product changes, not independent evidence that the CX-5 was the best compact SUV. Mazda’s 2019 announcement outlines the update.
Both engine versions were paired in Mazda’s press-kit materials with a SKYACTIV-Drive six-speed automatic transmission featuring manual-shift and sport modes. The turbo was positioned in upper trims rather than offered throughout the lineup. Because published equipment varies by trim and market, verify a specific used car’s window sticker or VIN build details rather than assuming it has a particular engine or feature.
Which 2019 CX-5 trims have the turbo?
Mazda’s materials place the SKYACTIV-G 2.5T in the upper end of the lineup; the naturally aspirated SKYACTIV-G 2.5 was the other engine. The available information does not establish a single trim-and-equipment combination for every market, so confirm the engine on the individual vehicle’s build record and under-hood identification.

The turbo is a meaningful distinction for shoppers choosing between two otherwise similar-looking CX-5s. The sources establish its availability and positioning, but do not provide independent acceleration testing or a basis for quantifying a performance advantage. Treat it as a different powertrain option, not proof of a particular real-world speed or driving result.
Does the 2019 Mazda CX-5 have Apple CarPlay?
Some do. Mazda announced Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility for the 2019 CX-5, but its owner guidance labels CarPlay as available on “Some Models.” Do not assume a used CX-5 has factory CarPlay based only on its model year or trim name; check the installed infotainment system or confirm the vehicle’s build information. For a vehicle equipped with CarPlay, Mazda’s guidance describes connecting an iPhone at the marked USB terminal with an Apple genuine connector cord. CarPlay supports functions such as calls, messages, music, maps and Siri; Mazda cautions that operation may differ from the functions described in the manual. A cable must match the phone’s connector, and it cannot add CarPlay to a vehicle that lacks the feature.
What comfort and technology features are available?
Higher trims could add convenience and cabin equipment that is not standard on every 2019 CX-5. Mazda’s press-kit materials identify features including ventilated front seats, heated rear seats and steering wheel, Bose 10-speaker audio, a windshield-projected Active Driving Display and a 360-degree view monitor with parking sensors. When inspecting a car, check for the features you actually want rather than relying on a listing’s generic trim description. For example, confirm the seat controls and rear-seat heating switches, look for the head-up display, and test the camera views and parking sensors. Equipment can vary by trim and market.
How strong are the 2019 CX-5’s safety credentials?
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) lists the 2019 CX-5 as a Top Safety Pick+, but the designation applies only to vehicles with specific headlights. The IIHS page gives Good ratings in its listed crashworthiness categories, while front crash-prevention results vary with the installed system. It distinguishes the standard Smart City Brake Support system from the optional Smart Brake Support configuration; pedestrian prevention is also listed as optional on specified trims. The same page identifies blind-spot detection as standard and lane-departure warning and prevention as optional. These results describe the tested vehicle configurations and available equipment, not a guarantee that every used CX-5 has those systems or the qualifying headlights.
