The 2019 BMW X4 M40i is a genuinely quick performance crossover disguised as a four-door coupe. Its turbocharged inline-six, all-wheel drive, adaptive suspension, and strong body control make it much more than a stylish X3. Independent testing recorded 0–60 mph in 4.2 seconds, although BMW’s official claim was 4.6 seconds.
The trade-off is equally clear: the X4 M40i sacrifices some rear-seat headroom, cargo flexibility, and rearward visibility compared with the conventional BMW X3. Buy it for the combination of speed, all-weather usability, and fastback design—not because it is the most rational member of BMW’s compact SUV lineup.
What is the 2019 BMW X4 M40i?
The 2019 model introduced the second-generation BMW X4, known internally as the G02. In the United States, BMW offered it in two versions: the four-cylinder xDrive30i and the six-cylinder M40i. Both came standard with all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission.
The M40i was priced from $60,450 before destination, taxes, registration, and options. That was approximately $10,000 more than the $50,450 X4 xDrive30i. The X4 was built alongside the X3 at BMW’s Spartanburg, South Carolina, facility for worldwide distribution.

Although the X4 shares its basic architecture with the X3, calling it simply an X3 with a sloped roof misses the point. BMW stretched the second-generation X4 by roughly three inches overall and added about two inches of wheelbase. The result looks less top-heavy than the previous X4, while the M40i receives a more aggressive chassis and standard M Performance equipment.
It is important to distinguish the M40i from the full BMW X4 M. The M40i is an M Performance model: fast, heavily upgraded, and designed for everyday use, but not the later full-M variant.
Performance: the X4 M40i is seriously quick
Under the hood is BMW’s B58B30M0 turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six. It produces 355 horsepower at 5,500–6,500 rpm and 365 lb-ft of torque from 1,520–4,800 rpm. Power goes through an 8HP50 Sport eight-speed automatic transmission to the standard all-wheel-drive system.
BMW published a 4.6-second 0–60-mph time. In testing, Car and Driver reached 60 mph in 4.2 seconds and covered the quarter-mile in 12.9 seconds at 107 mph. Its tested curb weight was 4,146 pounds, which makes that acceleration particularly impressive. Launch control was also standard.

Acceleration is immediate and forceful, with the inline-six delivering a broad, muscular wave of torque rather than requiring high revs before it feels alive. The eight-speed automatic is unobtrusive in normal driving and responds quickly when the driver starts asking more of it.
All-wheel drive provides traction when launching and during poor weather, but it also contributes to the X4’s secure, planted personality. This is a crossover that can dispatch highway merges and passing maneuvers with sports-car urgency while retaining a useful driving position and four doors.
How fast does the 2019 X4 M40i feel?
Very fast. BMW’s factory number is conservative compared with the independent 4.2-second test result, but the more important takeaway is how accessible the performance feels. The engine responds with little drama, the transmission does not call attention to itself, and the X4 can build speed before its size and weight become obvious.
It is not a lightweight sports sedan. At more than two tons, it remains tall, heavy, and all-wheel drive. But the powertrain is strong enough that the mass rarely feels like a serious limitation in everyday acceleration.
Handling, steering, and ride quality
The M40i’s strongest argument over a conventional luxury crossover is its composure in corners. Standard equipment includes adaptive M suspension, M Sport brakes, variable sport steering, Performance Control, an M Sport exhaust, and the M Sport package. The standard wheels were 19-inch M double-spoke designs with 245/50 R19 tires; 20- and 21-inch wheel packages were available.

Car and Driver found the X4’s chassis and suspension tuning sharper than the related X3’s. Even with optional 20-inch wheels, the adaptive suspension remained composed over rough pavement, including in Sport+ mode. That is a meaningful distinction: the X4’s performance equipment is not merely cosmetic.
Body control is impressive for a crossover coupe. The X4 settles quickly after direction changes, resists excessive lean, and feels confident during fast highway transitions. The steering is direct and more traditionally BMW-like than the steering in some of the brand’s larger SUVs. The Drive described the transmission as unobtrusive during aggressive driving, while Cars.com praised the direct steering, highway damping, quiet ride, and controlled body motion.
Still, expectations matter. The X4 M40i is not a low-slung sports car. Its elevated seating position, substantial curb weight, and all-wheel-drive hardware remain noticeable when the road becomes especially technical. It is best understood as an unusually capable crossover coupe—one that blends speed and control with daily usability—rather than a sports sedan with extra ground clearance.
Adaptive suspension and wheel-size considerations
The adaptive suspension gives the M40i a broader range than its aggressive appearance suggests. It can provide a reasonably composed ride in normal use while supporting firmer responses when the driver selects a sportier mode. Larger 20- and 21-inch wheels may sharpen the visual presentation, but buyers should inspect tire condition and ride quality carefully on used examples. Wheel and tire packages can materially change the experience.
The M Sport differential was available but was not standard equipment according to BMW’s pricing information. That means two otherwise similar used M40i examples may not have identical handling hardware.
Exterior design: the reason to choose the X4
The second-generation X4 is more balanced visually than its predecessor. The longer body and wheelbase make the fastback roofline look intentional rather than crowded onto a short SUV platform. At 187.5 inches long, 76.3 inches wide, and riding on a 112.7-inch wheelbase, it has a substantial footprint without looking as upright as the X3.
The M40i adds an aerodynamic body kit, more aggressive bumpers and side sills, black Shadowline exterior trim, and other M-specific details. The visual message is clear: this is the performance version, not merely an X4 with a larger engine.

The styling also explains the vehicle’s central contradiction. The sloping roof is the feature that gives the X4 its identity, but it reduces the space and visibility that make a conventional SUV useful. The X4 looks sleeker and more expressive than the X3; the X3 is easier to justify if utility is the priority.
Interior, technology, and equipment
The 2019 X4’s cabin was a significant improvement over the outgoing model. The design is more upscale, materials are higher grade, and available Vernasca leather and distinctive trim choices help the M40i feel appropriate for its price. Equipment varies substantially between used examples because BMW spread desirable features across packages and stand-alone options. A used-car listing that says “M40i” does not by itself confirm the presence of every driver-assistance, lighting, audio, or comfort feature.

BMW lists seating for five, 8.0 inches of ground clearance, and 54.6 cubic feet of maximum cargo volume. Its technical data also shows 18.5–50.5 cubic feet of press trunk volume, reflecting different measurement conventions in the table. Those figures should not be treated as directly interchangeable, but they establish that the X4 remains a useful crossover rather than a conventional coupe.
The limitation appears when it is compared with the X3. The sloping roof reduces rear-seat headroom, and the fastback shape affects cargo capacity and rearward visibility. Adults can use the rear seats, but passengers who regularly need maximum headroom will find the X3 more accommodating. The hatchback opening is useful, but the roofline can restrict bulky cargo and make the available space less flexible.

Porsche Macan
The Porsche Macan is another natural cross-shop for buyers who prioritize handling. It is especially relevant to shoppers who want a more road-focused driving experience, although equipment, pricing, engine specification, and practicality vary by Macan version.
More extreme AMG and BMW models
The larger Mercedes-AMG GLC63 Coupe and full BMW X4 M occupy more aggressive performance territory.
