Choose the available widgets, then use the same screen to reorder or remove them. CarPlay displays the resulting widget stacks beside the Dashboard or Home screen, although the number of stacks depends on the vehicle’s display.
iOS 26 widgets are designed for glanceable information such as weather, calendar events, travel updates, sports scores, and delivery progress. They do not automatically turn an app into a complete CarPlay app, and some widgets are display-only.
Before you start
You need all of the following:
- An iPhone running iOS 26 or a later compatible release.
- A vehicle or aftermarket head unit that supports Apple CarPlay.
- A compatible CarPlay connection, either wired or wireless, depending on the vehicle.
- The iPhone paired with the correct vehicle in Settings > General > CarPlay.
Apple’s current iOS 26 compatibility information includes the iPhone 11 and later, the second- and third-generation iPhone SE, and newer supported models such as the iPhone 16e, iPhone 17-series models, iPhone Air, and iPhone 17e where supported by the applicable iOS 26 release. The exact device list can change with later releases, so check the compatibility information for the iOS version installed on your phone.
CarPlay availability is also vehicle-specific. Many new cars from model year 2016 onward include standard or optional CarPlay, but support can vary by model, trim, country, region, and head-unit configuration. A model year alone does not guarantee that a particular vehicle has CarPlay.

How to add widgets to CarPlay
- Park the vehicle. Do not configure widgets while driving.
- On the iPhone, open Settings.
- Tap General, then CarPlay.
- Select the vehicle you want to configure.
- Tap Widgets.
- Tap Add Widgets and follow the onscreen instructions.
The available choices depend on the apps installed on the iPhone and the widgets those apps expose for CarPlay. If an app does not appear in the list, it may not offer a compatible small widget, or its developer may have decided that the widget is not suitable for use in a vehicle.
How to reorder or remove CarPlay widgets
Return to Settings > General > CarPlay > [your vehicle] > Widgets whenever you want to change the layout.
- Reorder widgets: Drag the reorder control next to a widget to change its position.
- Remove a widget: Tap the remove control beside the widget you no longer want.
- Smart Rotate: Use the switch if you want iOS to manage which configured widgets are surfaced over time.
- Widget Suggestions: Use the switch to allow the system to surface suggested widgets.
Apple provides these controls but does not promise a fixed rotation order, schedule, or list of suggestions. Smart Rotate and Widget Suggestions should therefore be treated as convenience features, not as a guarantee that a particular widget will always be visible.
Where the widgets appear in CarPlay
After configuring the widgets, connect the iPhone to CarPlay. On the vehicle display, open CarPlay or select the CarPlay logo if it does not appear automatically. Move to the widget area beside the CarPlay Dashboard or Home screen. Apple’s CarPlay design documentation describes widgets as appearing to the left of the Dashboard or Home screen.

A smaller screen may show fewer stacks than a larger screen, so seeing fewer stacks is not necessarily a setup problem.

Connecting your iPhone to CarPlay
Wired CarPlay
Connect the iPhone to the vehicle’s CarPlay-capable USB port. Use a data-capable cable rather than a cable intended only for charging. Apple recommends an Apple USB cable for wired CarPlay, but the correct connector depends on both the iPhone and the vehicle—for example, USB-C to USB-A may be necessary for some older vehicle ports.
If you need one, an Apple USB cable for CarPlay or another compatible USB data cable can help rule out a charging-only or faulty cable during troubleshooting. The cable is not required specifically for iOS 26 widgets, and it will not add CarPlay to a vehicle that does not support CarPlay.
Wireless CarPlay
Wireless CarPlay requires a vehicle that supports wireless CarPlay. Siri must be enabled. Follow the vehicle’s instructions for initiating wireless pairing, then make sure Wi-Fi and CarPlay-related settings are enabled on the iPhone as prompted.
A vehicle that supports only wired CarPlay does not become wireless simply because the iPhone is running iOS 26. Some owners use a wireless CarPlay adapter with wired-CarPlay vehicles, but compatibility varies by vehicle, head unit, adapter, iPhone, and software version. Verify that an adapter supports the exact vehicle and existing wired CarPlay system before buying one; it is an optional connection accessory, not a requirement for widgets.
Which widgets are useful while driving?
CarPlay widgets are meant to be understood quickly without reading a dense dashboard. Good candidates usually have a clear status, a short value, and a reason to change during a journey.

These are examples, not a guaranteed list. The choices shown on your iPhone depend on installed apps, app versions, developer support, and sometimes region. Apple’s developer guidance says CarPlay uses the small widget family, removes the normal widget background, and scales the widget for the vehicle display. A widget that looks useful on the iPhone may therefore be unavailable or redesigned for CarPlay.
Keep the most important information near the top of the order and remove widgets that are distracting, difficult to read, or rarely useful. Do not try to manually configure them while the vehicle is moving.

Widgets are not the same as CarPlay apps
Adding a widget does not necessarily install or create a full CarPlay app. Developers can provide a small widget suitable for glanceable display without providing a complete CarPlay interface.
On a vehicle with a touchscreen, tapping a widget may open the associated app’s CarPlay interface if that app supports CarPlay. If the app has no CarPlay integration, tapping may do nothing, and the widget may appear dimmed. On vehicles without touch input, widgets and their buttons or toggles are inactive; the vehicle’s physical controls cannot make every widget interactive.
In practice, treat many widgets as information displays. Their exact behavior depends on the app developer, the vehicle’s input hardware, and the app’s CarPlay implementation.
Widgets versus Live Activities
Widgets are persistent, glanceable information surfaces that you select through CarPlay’s Widgets settings. Live Activities are separate real-time updates that can appear on the CarPlay Dashboard or as a notification.

Examples of Live Activities that can appear in CarPlay include Maps directions, live sports updates, and food-delivery estimates. You cannot add every Live Activity from the CarPlay Widgets screen. If a particular app’s real-time update is missing, check that app’s Live Activities setting on the iPhone and confirm that the app supports the feature.

Troubleshooting CarPlay widgets
There is no Widgets option
- Confirm that the iPhone is running iOS 26 or later.
- Open Settings > General > CarPlay and select the correct vehicle.
- Confirm that the vehicle or head unit supports the relevant CarPlay configuration.
- Update the iPhone and, where available, the vehicle’s software.
- Reconnect CarPlay and check the vehicle again.
If the vehicle is not listed under CarPlay, pair it first using the vehicle’s wired or wireless CarPlay instructions. If the car has no CarPlay support, iOS 26 cannot add the feature through software alone.
No apps appear under Add Widgets
The apps installed on the iPhone may not provide a CarPlay-suitable small widget. Developers can also mark a widget as unsuitable for CarPlay. Installing more apps will not necessarily produce more choices; the app itself must expose the appropriate CarPlay widget support.
A widget appears but cannot be tapped
This can be normal. The vehicle may not have a touchscreen, the widget may be display-only, or the associated app may not provide a CarPlay interface. A widget should not be assumed to support interaction merely because it appears in the list.

- For wired CarPlay, use the vehicle’s CarPlay-capable USB port and try a known-good data cable.
- For wireless CarPlay, confirm that the vehicle supports wireless CarPlay and that Siri is enabled.
- Follow the vehicle manufacturer’s pairing instructions rather than assuming every model uses the same process.
- Install the latest available iOS release and vehicle software.
- If the CarPlay Home screen does not open automatically, select the CarPlay logo on the vehicle display.
There are fewer widget stacks than expected
Apple says the number of stacks depends on the vehicle’s CarPlay display. A smaller or differently configured display may simply provide less space. Reordering widgets can place the most useful information where it is easiest to see.
A widget is distracting or difficult to read
Park before changing it, then remove the widget or move it lower in the order. CarPlay widgets are intended for brief glances, not prolonged reading or manual configuration. They also do not replace the vehicle’s built-in safety systems or the driver’s responsibility to watch the road.

What to do if your car has no CarPlay
If the vehicle lacks CarPlay, first verify the exact trim and head-unit configuration. Some manufacturers have offered software updates for certain earlier vehicles, but availability is not universal. An authorized automotive electronics installer or a retailer specializing in a CarPlay-compatible head unit may be able to identify a vehicle-specific upgrade, but installation and compatibility depend on the car’s wiring, controls, display, cameras, audio system, and region. Do not assume that replacing the head unit will preserve every factory feature.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I add CarPlay widgets while driving?
No. Configure, reorder, or remove widgets while the vehicle is parked. CarPlay is designed to minimize distraction, and widget customization should be completed before the journey.
Why can’t I find a widget from an app installed on my iPhone?
The app may not provide a small widget compatible with CarPlay, or its developer may have marked the widget as unsuitable for use in a vehicle. An iPhone widget does not automatically qualify as a CarPlay widget.
Do iOS 26 CarPlay widgets require wireless CarPlay?
No. Widgets can be used with compatible wired CarPlay as well as compatible wireless CarPlay. Wireless CarPlay is vehicle-dependent, and a wireless adapter is optional rather than an iOS 26 requirement.
Are Live Activities added from the CarPlay Widgets menu?
No. Live Activities are a separate CarPlay information surface. Manage an app’s Live Activity setting on the iPhone through Settings > Apps > [app] > Live Activities.
