The 2018 Mazda2 and Mazda Demio are names used for cars from the same generation, but they do not identify one universal specification. A New Zealand-new Mazda2 and a Japanese-import Demio can differ in engine, grade, drivetrain and equipment. For a used example, confirm its market and exact variant before relying on advertised specifications; condition and service records matter as much as the badge.
What does “2018 Mazda2 (Mazda Demio)” mean?
The fourth-generation model launched in 2014. Mazda used the Demio name in Japan and Mazda2 for the equivalent sold new in New Zealand, then retired the Demio name globally in 2019, according to the AA’s used-car review. The shared generation does not guarantee identical specifications.
This review covers the model family rather than one verified road-test car. No exact vehicle, market, grade or transmission is specified, so driving impressions or a single definitive specification would be misleading.
Which engines and transmissions were available?
Japanese-market Demio
Mazda’s Japanese-market update announced on 30 August 2018 replaced the listed petrol SKYACTIV-G 1.3-litre with an improved SKYACTIV-G 1.5-litre. The update’s grade table also listed 1.5-litre XD diesel grades and a 1.5-litre 15MB manual, alongside petrol grades with manual or automatic transmissions and 2WD or 4WD combinations. Those are Japanese-market variants, not a New Zealand trim guide. Mazda’s 2018 announcement and specifications list WLTC combined consumption of 19.0 km/L for the stated 2WD petrol automatic and 19.8 km/L for the 2WD petrol manual. These are Japanese test-cycle figures, not promises of real-world economy.

New Zealand-new Mazda2 and imports
Mazda New Zealand’s later range brochure describes a 1.5-litre petrol, front-wheel-drive range. It is not a definitive catalogue of every 2018 NZ-new grade. The AA says Demios imported into New Zealand commonly have 1.3- or 1.5-litre petrol engines, or a 1.5-litre diesel. Verify the engine, transmission, drivetrain and grade against the individual car’s records and identification rather than inferring them from “2018 Mazda2” or “Demio.”
What are the New Zealand brochure figures?
Mazda New Zealand’s later brochure for its 1.5-litre petrol range specifies a 1,496 cc engine producing 82 kW at 6,000 rpm and 144 Nm at 4,000 rpm, with a 44-litre fuel tank. It gives fuel-consumption figures of 5.3 L/100 km under NEDC and 5.9 L/100 km under converted three-phase WLTP, and emissions of 123 g/km NEDC and 137 g/km converted WLTP. These figures describe the later brochure range; they should not be assigned automatically to every 2018 car or compared directly with Japanese WLTC results. For generation context only, the AA’s 2015 launch review quoted 81 kW, 141 Nm, and consumption of 4.9 L/100 km for the automatic or 5.2 L/100 km for the manual on 91-octane fuel. How do equipment and safety vary?
Equipment depends on market and grade. Mazda New Zealand’s later brochure lists front, side and curtain airbags, ABS, blind-spot monitoring, child-seat anchors, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist and smart-braking functions across the range, with some features varying by grade. That brochure does not establish which individual items are fitted to every 2018 vehicle. Check the exact grade and confirm the equipment on the car.

Safety ratings also need their dates and scope:
- The AA says the Mazda2 received a five-star ANCAP rating at the generation’s 2014 launch; that rating has expired.
- The AA reports a four-star UCSR rating for 2014–2019 Demios, based on New Zealand and Australian crash data. UCSR is a different assessment from an ANCAP rating for a new vehicle.
Neither rating should be described as a current five-star rating for every 2018 Mazda2 or Demio. AA’s review explains the rating context.

Establish the exact car
- Confirm whether it is NZ-new or a Japanese import, then identify its engine, transmission, drivetrain and grade from the vehicle documents and chassis information.
- Check that advertised safety and convenience equipment is actually present; equipment lists for another market or grade are not proof.
- Ask for service invoices or a service book and compare the recorded work with the seller’s account.
Assess condition and maintenance
The AA notes that imported cars may not have a full service history. It recommends checking condition and records and considering a pre-purchase inspection. It also connects long-term reliability with regular servicing and the correct oil grade; that is general ownership guidance, not proof that any particular car is in good condition or that a specific 2018 defect is widespread.

The AA describes the Demio as fuel-efficient and practical for commuting. Those broad strengths do not replace checking a specific car’s mechanical condition, maintenance history and suitability for your needs.
Ask about security and insurance
The AA says the model appears on New Zealand stolen-car lists and that older examples may lack newer anti-theft technology, which can affect insurance premiums. It does not provide a theft-rate figure or ranking. Ask your insurer for a quote on the specific vehicle and check any security requirements before purchase.

How do Australian reviews fit?
Australian-market coverage of the 2018 Mazda2 discusses Neo, Maxx, Genki and GT grades, including a preference for a Maxx manual in one review. Those grade names, prices and equipment details are not a reliable guide to NZ-new cars or Japanese imports. Auto Trader’s 2018 Australian review is useful only when considering the Australian-market versions it describes.
