It can feel well equipped, but trim names alone do not tell you what a particular vehicle has: many desirable comfort, audio and driver-assistance features depend on option packages. The 2.0-liter gasoline engine is the strongest all-round choice for performance; the diesel trades pace and refinement for an efficiency-oriented character. Whether a used Terrain is a good buy depends on its engine, equipment, condition and local price—not just its Denali badge.
Is the 2018 GMC Terrain a good SUV?
It can be, especially for drivers who value a composed ride, roomy cabin and easy-to-use infotainment. Car and Driver praised its ride and controls, writing, “A refined chassis provides the Terrain with a composed and competent ride.” The publication also found the 2.0-liter engine lively. Its reservations were meaningful, though: it criticized cabin materials and build consistency, considered the 1.5-liter underpowered, and judged the diesel slower and less refined. It also saw the Terrain as costly among compact crossovers. These are review judgments, not guarantees about every used example.
The redesign moved the Terrain into the compact SUV class, and its three engine choices make comparisons between used listings especially important. The model is not uniformly upscale across trims: equipment varies with packages, and a higher trim or attractive listing description is not a substitute for checking the vehicle’s actual build.
Which engine is best in a 2018 GMC Terrain?
GMC’s 2018 brochure lists three turbocharged four-cylinder powertrains. The 1.5-liter is the base gasoline engine, the 2.0-liter delivers substantially more power, and the 1.6-liter diesel is the distinct efficiency-oriented alternative. GMC lists the following outputs and transmissions:

| Engine | GMC-listed output | Transmission | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.5-liter turbo gasoline | 170 hp; 203 lb-ft | Nine-speed automatic | Everyday driving where lower power is acceptable |
| 2.0-liter turbo gasoline | 252 hp; 260 lb-ft | Nine-speed automatic | Drivers who prioritize stronger acceleration and the most power |
| 1.6-liter turbo diesel | 137 hp; 240 lb-ft | Six-speed automatic | Buyers drawn to the diesel’s efficiency-oriented character and willing to accept slower, less refined performance in Car and Driver’s assessment |
Front-wheel drive is standard, with all-wheel drive available in configurations described by GMC. Edmunds says the base SL is front-drive only and Denali is limited to the 2.0-liter. Confirm the engine and drivetrain on the specific vehicle’s VIN or build information rather than relying on a listing headline. GMC’s brochure lists maximum trailering weights of 1,500 lb for the 1.5-liter and diesel and 3,500 lb for the 2.0-liter; verify the vehicle’s drivetrain and equipment limits in its owner’s manual before towing.

What is the difference between Terrain SL, SLE, SLT and Denali?
GMC’s brochure lists SL, SLE, SLE Diesel, SLT, SLT Diesel and Denali. The trim ladder helps orient a shopper, but does not establish that a particular vehicle has every convenience or safety feature associated with the name. The brochure’s package matrix shows equipment varying by trim, with some combinations conditional on other packages.

- SL: The base trim; Edmunds identifies it as front-wheel drive only.
- SLE: Available with gasoline or diesel configurations in GMC’s trim lineup; check the actual powertrain and packages.
- SLT: Also listed in gasoline and diesel versions; package fitment still determines many notable features.
- Denali: The top-named trim, limited to the 2.0-liter according to Edmunds. Its name does not remove the need to verify individual equipment.
For any used example, the original window sticker or vehicle build record is the clearest way to confirm what was installed.
Which options matter, and why can a well-equipped Terrain cost more?
Many features buyers may associate with an upscale compact SUV were tied to packages, and some package combinations required other packages. GMC’s brochure describes these examples:
- Driver Convenience: Examples include heated front seats, remote start and dual-zone climate control.
- Infotainment I and II: Navigation and Bose audio were available through infotainment packages.
- Driver Alert I: Examples include blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.
- Driver Alert II: Examples include forward-collision alert, low-speed automatic braking, lane-keeping functions and automatic high beams.
- Advanced Safety: Examples include surround-view and automated-parking features.
These examples should not be read as standard equipment on every trim or as universally available combinations. Check the specific vehicle’s window sticker or build information and compare the verified features against the asking price. A listing’s trim badge alone is not enough to establish navigation, Bose audio or a particular driver-assistance system.

How did the 2018 Terrain do in safety testing?
The IIHS results are mixed rather than reducible to a single “safe” label. The page lists Good ratings in several crashworthiness categories, including the original side test, but a Marginal rating in the updated side test. It also gives Poor ratings for the listed headlight configurations, including Denali LED headlights. Optional front crash prevention is rated Superior.
Those ratings refer to particular tests and equipment, and IIHS notes that some tests use Chevrolet Equinox vehicles; consult the page for the stated applicability to the Terrain/model range. Before buying a specific vehicle, check its VIN for recall records and confirm which headlights and driver-assistance equipment it actually has. The IIHS page is not a substitute for a VIN-specific recall check.

- Check safety and recalls. Identify the installed headlights and assistance features, review the IIHS ratings for the applicable configuration, and look up recalls by VIN.
- Compare local asking prices carefully. Mileage, condition, options, title history, seller and location all affect the value of an individual vehicle.
Kelley Blue Book’s accessed 2018 Terrain page displayed estimated prices starting at $11,250 for SL and $16,050 for Denali, alongside historical starting MSRPs of $25,990 and $40,295. Those KBB estimates are values displayed at access time, not stable national transaction prices; the historical MSRPs describe a different point in time and should not be treated as directly comparable current listings.
