2017 BMW S 1000 R Review: What Changed and What to Check Before Buying

BMW's 2017 S 1000 R update brought 165 hp, a lighter stated DIN weight, and revised equipment. Here is what the specs establish—and what to verify on a used bike.

The 2017 BMW S 1000 R is a high-output, minimally faired roadster: BMW raised its claimed power to 165 hp, reduced its stated DIN unladen weight to 205 kg, and revised the frame and equipment for that model year. Those figures and changes make it a potent proposition on paper, but the available evidence is manufacturer specifications rather than an independent road test. Whether a particular used example is appealing depends heavily on its installed options, market specification, condition, and service records.

What the 2017 update changed

BMW announced the 2017 revisions in 2016, describing the S 1000 R as a dynamic roadster derived from the S 1000 RR. Its reduced fairing sets it apart from the fully faired supersport, while the inline-four powertrain keeps the emphasis on performance. BMW said the 2017 bike met EU4 requirements.

Item 2017 specification or change
Maximum output 121 kW / 165 hp at 11,000 rpm, up from 118 kW / 160 hp; BMW Group, 2016 model-year 2017 announcement.
DIN unladen weight 205 kg, a 2 kg reduction; BMW Group, 2016 model-year 2017 announcement.
Gross vehicle weight 407 kg for the market specification in BMW’s 2016 announcement.
Exhaust and handlebars Standard HP titanium rear silencer and vibration-decoupled handlebars, according to BMW’s US announcement.
Frame Revised structure with a lighter rear section; BMW said the changes addressed rigidity and flex.
Instrument cluster Revised multifunction display with an outdoor-temperature display and improved readability, according to BMW.

BMW said its frame changes were intended to improve traction, precision, and feedback. That is the manufacturer’s stated objective, not an independently verified handling result. The same distinction applies to BMW’s descriptions of sound, comfort, and rider-aid safety benefits: no independent ride impressions or measurements are established here.

See BMW Group’s 18 November 2016 US announcement and its 4 October 2016 global press kit for the model-year details.

How to read its performance claims

The 165 hp figure is BMW’s stated 2017 output at 11,000 rpm. It supports calling the S 1000 R a high-output roadster, but it does not by itself establish how fast the bike accelerates, how it handles, or how comfortable it is on a long ride. The manufacturer’s intended improvements in traction and feedback should not be mistaken for measured results.

Keep later-model specifications separate. BMW Motorrad USA’s current S 1000 R technical page describes a later generation, listing 170 hp at 11,000 rpm, 84 lb-ft at 9,250 rpm, 999 cc, and 438.7 lb fully fueled and road-ready. None of those current-page figures is a 2017 specification. The page is useful as a model-year distinction, not as a substitute for the 2017 figures; see BMW Motorrad USA’s current S 1000 R technical data.

Standard equipment and optional electronics

For the US specification in BMW’s 2017 announcement, Rain and Road riding modes, ASC, and partially integral Race ABS were standard. Several more advanced aids were optional, so do not assume every used bike has them. Equipment and package contents can vary by market.

Equipment 2017 US announcement status
Rain and Road modes Standard.
ASC and partially integral Race ABS Standard.
Ride Modes Pro Optional factory equipment; added Dynamic and configurable User modes, ABS Pro, Launch Control, and a Pit Lane Limiter.
Dynamic Traction Control Optional factory equipment, according to BMW.
HP Shift Assist Pro Optional; BMW said it enabled clutchless upshifts and downshifts.
Dynamic Damping Control Optional.
ABS Pro Included with optional Ride Modes Pro in the announcement.
Heated grips and cruise control Optional.
HP forged wheels and design-option wheels Optional wheel choices.

BMW also listed accessories such as comfort seats, windshields, luggage, a workstand, a battery charger, and a tubeless-tire repair set. The announcement establishes that these categories were offered, not that a specific item remains available or fits a particular motorcycle today.

What to check on a used 2017 S 1000 R

There is no established reliability finding or fault pattern in the sources cited here. Treat a purchase assessment as an individual-bike evaluation rather than assuming either that the model is trouble-free or that it has a known defect. BMW’s release and specification pages cannot verify the condition or history of a particular motorcycle.

  1. Confirm identity and market specification. Match the model year and market to the bike’s documents and VIN records. Standard and optional equipment can differ by market, and a registration year alone does not establish a model-year specification.
  2. Inventory installed options. Check which aids are actually present—especially Ride Modes Pro, ABS Pro, Dynamic Traction Control, Shift Assist Pro, and Dynamic Damping Control—instead of pricing or comparing the bike as though all were standard.
  3. Review service documentation. Ask for records and compare maintenance needs against the correct 2017 owner information or BMW service guidance. BMW’s current technical page lists chain drive for its later model; confirm year-specific chain-maintenance instructions rather than applying an interval from a different generation.
  4. Assess condition and modifications. Inspect the motorcycle and its documentation with a qualified technician if needed. The cited sources provide no inspection findings, so condition cannot be inferred from model specifications or option lists.
  5. Compare the whole deal. Consider condition, service history, installed equipment, and asking price together. The sources here do not establish current used-market values or a fair-price range.

What the available evidence can—and cannot—tell you

BMW’s announcement and press kit establish the claimed model-year changes, specifications, and announced equipment. They do not provide independent measurements of acceleration, braking, fuel consumption, real-world range, comfort, heat, vibration, or handling. Nor do they establish reliability rates or recall status. For those questions, consult a qualified inspection and year- and market-specific records rather than treating manufacturer claims as test results.
