The 2018 Ford Mustang Cobra Jet 50th Anniversary was not a street Mustang with a few track options. It was a limited-production, turnkey drag racer built to NHRA rules, with a hand-built supercharged 5.2-liter Coyote V8, a four-link rear suspension and a target of mid-eight-second quarter-mile runs at more than 150 mph. Ford built just 68 non-VIN examples, making this one of the rarest modern factory-built Mustang race cars.

Ford created the 2018 Cobra Jet to mark 50 years since the original 1968 Mustang Cobra Jet. The anniversary car continued the Cobra Jet formula: Ford Performance assembled a complete competition vehicle rather than a road car that an owner would need to convert for drag racing.

Every major system reflects that purpose. The car has a race-prepared V8, a solid rear axle, four-link suspension, a certified roll cage, FIA-rated seats, racing brakes and narrow front and wide rear drag-race wheels. Ford described it as a turnkey drag racer eligible for NHRA competition and for several NMRA and NMCA classes, although eligibility always depends on the sanctioning bodies’ current technical rules.

Hand-built Ford Performance powerplant
The Cobra Jet’s defining component is a hand-built Ford Performance 5.2L supercharged V8. Ford’s owner manual identifies it explicitly as a hand-built Ford Performance engine, while the company’s overview gives the race-engine code CM-6007-SCJ18. The engine is part of the Coyote V8 family, but it was prepared as a competition powerplant rather than installed as a standard production Mustang engine.
Supercharging supplies pressurized intake air so the engine can produce the power needed for a very short, very hard acceleration run. In a drag car, the calibration, cooling, fuel system and durability strategy matter as much as displacement. Ford described the engine as performance-tuned for a durable race powertrain, but the published information does not establish a single horsepower figure.

- Stroke: 93 mm.
- Compression ratio: 9.7:1.
The nearly square bore-and-stroke dimensions balance airflow capacity with the ability to operate across the engine speeds used in a quarter-mile pass. The 9.7:1 ratio is also a useful clue that the engine was engineered around forced induction and race use rather than maximum compression for a naturally aspirated street engine. That interpretation explains the architecture, but it is not a substitute for a dyno sheet.

Drivetrain and rear suspension
Strange 9-inch solid axle
Power reaches the rear wheels through a Strange Engineering 9-inch solid rear axle with a 3.89:1 gear ratio. The 9-inch layout is a familiar drag-racing choice because its housing, gearset and axle components can be configured for repeated launches and class-specific setups. The published specification identifies the axle and ratio; it does not list every internal component or a universal gear-change recommendation.
Four-link geometry
A four-link rear suspension lets a race team tune how the axle housing moves under acceleration. That is important when the car must transfer weight to the rear tires without excessive wheel hop or instability. The Cobra Jet’s four-link arrangement, combined with the solid axle, makes its rear suspension fundamentally different from the independent rear suspension used by many road-oriented Mustangs.
The front suspension uses adjustable Ford Racing struts. Adjustment allows a team to tune the front end for launch behavior and track conditions instead of accepting the fixed compromise required of a street car.
Wheels, tires, brakes and driver protection
Purpose-built drag-race wheel and tire sizes
Ford lists Weld Racing drag wheels with a 26 × 4-15 front package and a 30 × 9-15 rear package. The narrow front tires reduce rolling resistance and steering load, while the substantially wider rear tires provide the contact patch needed to apply supercharged torque during a launch. These dimensions also make the car’s purpose obvious: they are not normal road-going Mustang tire sizes.

Race braking and safety hardware
Braking is supplied by a Strange Engineering racing system. The car also includes an NHRA-certified roll cage, Racetech FIA seats and a Sparco quick-release steering wheel. The cage protects the driver in a competition environment; the FIA seats and quick-release wheel help a driver remain securely positioned and make emergency egress more practical. This equipment is part of the car’s race specification, not an indication that the vehicle meets ordinary road-car safety and registration requirements.
How fast is the 2018 Cobra Jet?
Ford announced a target of a mid-eight-second quarter-mile elapsed time and a terminal speed above 150 mph. Those numbers describe the car’s intended capability as a turnkey drag racer, not an independently measured test result supplied with the published specifications.
A quarter-mile time is highly sensitive to conditions and setup. Track preparation, weather, altitude, fuel, tire pressure, launch technique, engine calibration and class rules can all change the result. Consequently, “mid-eight seconds” should be read as Ford’s performance target for a properly prepared race car, not a guaranteed time for every pass or every owner.
The more than 150-mph figure is likewise a manufacturer-stated target. It communicates the speed range for which the chassis, safety equipment and braking system were designed, but it should not be presented as a universal top-speed rating.

Is it street legal?
The 2018 Cobra Jet should not be described as an ordinary street-legal Mustang. Ford built it for drag racing, supplied it without conventional VIN-based road-car identity and equipped it with competition hardware. Registration, inspection, lighting, emissions and insurance requirements vary by jurisdiction, and the available Ford material does not certify the car for public-road use.
Its documented role is competition. Ford said the car was designed to be legal for NHRA drag racing and for several NMRA and NMCA classes. “Legal” in that context means eligible under a sanctioning body’s technical rules; it does not mean legal on public roads. Those organizations can revise class requirements, so a current rulebook must be checked before entering an event.

Exterior choices and graphics
The available base colors were Race Red and Oxford White. Ford offered a 50th Anniversary graphics package and anniversary badging as options, so not every example necessarily has identical exterior markings. The graphics celebrate the 1968 origin without changing the underlying race specification.
Ford Racing Parts global director Eric Cin summarized the lineage this way: “From the very first Mustang Cobra Jets dominating the 1968 NHRA Winternationals to our modern-day Cobra Jet racers, the Ford Racing Parts team continues to build the Cobra Jet brand based on its success at the track over five decades.”
Related carbon-fiber hood for 2018–2019 Mustang
Ford Performance documented the M-16612-AECJ carbon-fiber hood as a related component used on the 50th Anniversary Cobra Jet race car. The part fits 2018–2019 Mustang models, but it is a competition/off-highway component rather than a general street accessory.

- It requires hood pins for secure installation.
- It requires removal of the windshield wipers.
- Ford identifies it for competition or off-highway use.
Those requirements matter when evaluating a conversion. A hood that fits the body shell does not automatically preserve road usability, weather equipment or legal compliance. Buyers should confirm current fitment instructions and the intended use before ordering any race component.
What to verify when evaluating a Cobra Jet
Because the production run is tiny and the cars are non-VIN racers, documentation is particularly important. A prospective owner should confirm the car’s provenance, original specification and intended competition class before treating it as a conventional used Mustang.
- Identity: Verify that the car is represented as one of the 68 2018 anniversary non-VIN examples.
- Engine: Confirm the hand-built 5.2-liter supercharged engine and CM-6007-SCJ18 identification where applicable.
- Chassis: Check for the four-link rear suspension, Strange 9-inch axle, adjustable front struts and racing brake system.
- Safety: Inspect the NHRA-certified cage, Racetech FIA seats and Sparco quick-release wheel for condition and current event compliance.
- Wheels and tires: Confirm that the drag-specific front and rear sizes match the documented configuration and that consumables are suitable for the intended track.
- Rules: Read the current NHRA, NMRA or NMCA class rules rather than relying on the 2018 launch description.
- Use: Plan enclosed transport and a competition-focused operating routine instead of assuming the car can be driven to events like a road Mustang.
