Transmission complaints also appear, but complaint counts are not failure rates, and Ford’s service documents apply only to specific vehicles. If you are buying or diagnosing one, check its engine, service records, symptoms, and VIN-specific recall or program status.
Which problems do owners report most often?
Two sources offer different kinds of owner-report evidence. Consumer Reports says its reliability material is based on its latest subscriber survey of 2018 Escape owners; comments include examples of coolant entering cylinders and engine replacement. Those comments illustrate reported experiences, not how often the problems affect the model.
CarComplaints.com’s displayed category list showed the following counts when reviewed in 2026. They count submissions in that site’s collection, not the percentage of Escapes affected; categories reflect how reports were classified and may overlap with the symptoms owners describe.

Engine problems and coolant intrusion
Coolant intrusion is the most consequential engine concern in the reviewed owner reports. Ford’s Customer Satisfaction Program 19B37 said that some affected vehicles may experience coolant intrusion into cylinder bores. It listed coolant loss, excessive tailpipe smoke, and a malfunction indicator light caused by an engine misfire as possible symptoms, and warned that the condition could damage the engine. This does not mean every 2018 Escape is affected.
Ford issued 19B37 for certain 2017–2019 Escapes equipped with the 1.5L GTDI engine. Its stated remedy was a powertrain control module (PCM) reprogramming intended to improve cooling and reduce the potential for intrusion. The program period ended June 30, 2021; it is historical program information, not a current general repair promise or proof that a particular vehicle qualifies. Ask Ford or a dealer to check the VIN for any current coverage or open actions. Ford Customer Satisfaction Program 19B37.
What Ford’s diagnostic bulletin says
Ford Technical Service Bulletin 19-2375 describes a technician diagnostic path for coolant intrusion in certain vehicles. It calls for a cooling-system pressure test; if pressure drops by more than 4 psi after five hours, the procedure continues with spark-plug removal and cylinder inspection. If coolant is found in the cylinders, the bulletin directs engine removal and short-block replacement. The threshold and repair direction belong to this specific procedure, not a do-it-yourself test or a diagnosis based on symptoms alone.

Ford states that the procedure is for trained professional technicians and should not be performed by do-it-yourselfers. A bulletin is not a recall, nor does it establish that every vehicle of a model year has the condition. Ford cautions that bulletins may be superseded; consult a qualified shop or Ford for applicable, current service information. Ford TSB 19-2375, dated January 2020.

Unexplained coolant loss, excessive exhaust smoke, a check-engine light with misfires, or evidence of engine damage warrants prompt diagnosis by a qualified technician. Do not assume that adding coolant or clearing a warning addresses the cause. These symptoms can have different explanations, and vehicle-specific service history and inspection matter.
Transmission and other owner reports
Transmission trouble is the second-largest category in CarComplaints.com’s displayed list, with 15 reports. That supports noting owner-reported transmission problems, but it does not establish an official failure rate or a single diagnosis for the 2018 Escape. Shifting symptoms can have different causes and repair needs; a qualified diagnosis is more useful than assuming a particular component has failed.

The same collection lists reports involving body and paint, cooling systems, electrical equipment, restraints, and steering. These are owner submissions, not independently confirmed model-wide defects. Review each vehicle’s symptoms and records rather than treating a complaint category as proof of a defect.

Ford’s October 2018 notice for Compliance Recall 18C06, also identified as NHTSA Recall 18V-612, says an incorrect door striker bolt may have been installed. The notice explains that the wrong bolt could reduce striker strength and allow a door to open in a crash. Ford’s remedy was replacement of all four door striker bolts at no charge for an affected vehicle.
A model-year listing alone cannot show whether an individual Escape is included or whether its repair was completed. Check the VIN with NHTSA’s recall lookup or Ford, and confirm the remedy status. Ford’s 18C06 / NHTSA 18V-612 owner notice.

How to assess a used 2018 Escape
Complaint totals are a poor way to choose between two vehicles. Compare the particular cars and their documentation instead:
- Identify the engine and vehicle details. Program 19B37 applied to certain 1.5L GTDI vehicles, not every 2018 Escape. Confirm the engine and have Ford or a dealer check the VIN for applicable service actions or coverage.
- Review service records. Look for documented coolant-loss investigations, engine work, and recall completion. Ask what was diagnosed and repaired rather than relying on a seller’s description alone.
- Ask about current symptoms. Take reports of coolant loss, smoke, misfires, warning lights, or shifting trouble seriously and have them evaluated before purchase.
- Arrange an independent inspection. Use a qualified mechanic familiar with the vehicle; Ford’s bulletin reserves its pressure-test and cylinder-inspection procedure for trained technicians.
- Verify recall status by VIN. Confirm whether any applicable door-striker recall remedy remains open or was completed.
A clean-looking vehicle or a low number of complaints attached to its listing is not a substitute for inspection and records. A specific car’s condition, engine, build details, and completed repairs are more useful than model-wide complaint totals.
What these reports can—and cannot—tell you
Owner-report collections can help identify issues worth asking about, but they do not provide a verified share of 2018 Escapes affected. Consumer Reports’ examples are individual comments, while CarComplaints.com’s totals are submissions to one third-party site. Ford’s technical and program documents describe conditions and procedures for specified vehicles; eligibility and repair coverage depend on the individual vehicle and applicable terms.
