The 2017 Yamaha SCR950 is a street-oriented V-twin with scrambler styling, built on a Bolt-family foundation. Its upright riding position, spoked wheels and block-pattern tires give it a rugged look, but those features alone do not establish that it is suited to serious off-road riding. For a used-bike shopper, the key checks are the exact market specification, the motorcycle’s condition and the availability of correct model-specific documentation and parts.
What is the 2017 Yamaha SCR950?
Yamaha positioned the SCR950 as a “Tough Explorer” and based it on the Bolt series. Its design changes included a revised riding position, a newly designed rear frame and a 17-inch rear tire. Yamaha highlighted its wide handlebar, number-plate-style side covers, spoked wheels and upright posture in its April 5, 2017 Japan-market announcement. These are styling and configuration details, not evidence of off-road performance.
Yamaha’s announcement introduced the SCR950 ABS in Japan and said it would be released there on May 25, 2017. That announcement’s pricing, annual sales plan and type-approval information apply to Japan, not the US market.

How is it configured for riding?
Yamaha Europe describes a flat dual seat, upright riding position, wide scrambler-style handlebar, 19-inch front and 17-inch rear spoked wheels, Bridgestone block-pattern tires, twin rear shocks and under-seat storage. Those are factsheet details for the European model; confirm the equipment on the specific motorcycle and its market version before relying on them.
The combination of a Bolt-family base, V-twin engine and scrambler styling is useful context for evaluating the bike, but the cited product descriptions do not establish comparative performance, reliability or suitability for a particular kind of rough-road use. For a comparison with another motorcycle, assess weight and seat height, low-rpm engine character, intended road surface, tires and wheels, suspension and brakes, comfort, fuel capacity, and local access to parts and manuals.

What should a used-bike shopper verify?
The available published specifications answer what Yamaha announced and what period US reports listed; they do not establish an individual SCR950’s condition or owner satisfaction. Inspect the actual motorcycle and check its records rather than treating model descriptions as a substitute for a mechanical assessment.
- Confirm the year, market version and identity of the motorcycle against its documents and VIN.
- Check that the fitted tires, replacement parts and accessories match the exact model and year; Bolt-family relationship does not guarantee fitment.
- Review maintenance records and compare service work with the correct market- and year-specific Yamaha manual.
- Use condition, local availability and the seller’s documentation to judge an individual bike; the launch-era MSRP is not a guide to current used value.
No reliability rate or owner-satisfaction statistic is established by the cited material, so a general claim that all SCR950s are dependable or troublesome would go beyond the evidence.

Maintenance, tires and manuals
An online transcription of the 2017 owner’s manual lists tube-type tire sizes of 100/90-19M/C 57H at the front and 140/80R17M/C 69H at the rear, with 41 psi specified for both. It also lists engine-oil quantities of 4.00 L when removing the filter and 3.70 L without replacing the filter. Because that transcription is hosted by a third party, verify the exact figures against the correct manual and the motorcycle before servicing it. The transcription is available at ManualsLib’s 2017 Yamaha SCR950 manual page.
Yamaha’s publication store lists a printed 2017 SCR950 owner’s manual, part LIT-11626-30-15, and printed service manual, part LIT-11616-30-15. Formats, availability and prices can change; check the listing and the model identification before ordering through Yamaha’s owner-manual and service-manual store.

Finding parts and accessories
Yamaha’s parts catalog includes genuine parts for the 2017 SCR950, and Cycle News reported that Yamaha offered an SCR accessory catalog.
