The Boss 302S is a purpose-built, off-road-only road-racing Mustang—not a street-legal version of the road-going Boss 302. Ford’s 2014 specification lists a 5.0-liter V8, six-speed transmission, race-focused suspension and brakes, data acquisition, and dedicated safety equipment. A specific car described as “2016” needs vehicle-specific documentation before that year can be treated as its model year.
Is there a 2016 Ford Mustang Boss 302S?
The year in the title is not confirmed by the available Ford documentation. Ford’s official Boss 302S materials include a specification labeled 2014 and an owner’s manual for that car. A secondary market-model index describes Boss 302S production years as 2012–2014. Neither source establishes a 2016 model-year Boss 302S.
An enthusiast article once speculated that an updated-body 2016 version might appear, but it also acknowledged Ford had not released details. That speculation is not evidence that Ford built one. A car advertised, registered, or raced in 2016 could have another explanation, but the year alone does not establish its model year or provenance. For an individual car, look for a VIN, build sheet, or other vehicle-specific records.
Ford’s 2014 catalog lists an MSRP of $89,995. This is a historical catalog figure, not a current price or an estimate of what a particular car is worth. Ford’s official listing is available on its Boss 302 page.

What is the Boss 302S?
Ford characterized the Boss 302S as an entry-level, purpose-built road-racing Mustang and open-track car. Ford said it was approved by NASA and SCCA for American Iron and World Challenge GTS competition. Its equipment reflects that purpose: race-oriented chassis and brake components, driver safety systems, and onboard data acquisition rather than the features expected of a conventional road-going Mustang.
The Ford Racing owner’s manual states: “This is a Racing Vehicle!! This vehicle is intended for off-road use ONLY and is not legal for on-road use!” That is Ford’s stated intended use; do not assume an individual car can be legally driven on public roads. Registration and road-use rules can also depend on jurisdiction, so anyone assessing a particular vehicle should check local requirements.

2014 Boss 302S specifications documented by Ford
The following equipment is listed in Ford’s 2014 catalog or owner’s manual. It describes the documented configuration, not the verified present-day condition or equipment of any specific car.
| Area | Ford-documented equipment |
|---|---|
| Engine | 5.0-liter, four-valve Boss V8 with unique Ford Racing calibration. The owner’s manual describes a Ford Racing Motorsport engine based on the 2012 Mustang Boss 302 engine, with a Ford Racing oil pan, oil cooler, Boss 302 fuel system, and upgraded cooling. |
| Transmission and differential | Six-speed transmission; the manual specifies a dual-disc clutch. Torsen limited-slip differential with 3.73:1 final-drive ratio; the manual identifies a Torsen T2R differential. |
| Suspension and chassis | Coil-over suspension, adjustable stabilizer bars, and camber plates. The manual also lists Delrin-bushed front control arms, spherical-bearing rear arms, and three-way Dynamics dampers manufactured by Multimatic. |
| Brakes and ABS | Brembo four-piston front brakes, two-piece 14-inch front rotors, PFC racing pads, brake ducts, stainless-steel brake lines, and a unique Ford Racing ABS calibration. The manual identifies the system as TRW Race ABS, uniquely tuned for the car. |
| Driver safety | Recaro HANS-compatible racing seat, six-point harness, window net, fire system, quick-release steering wheel, master cutoff, and FIA-spec six-point roll cage. |
| Data and other equipment | AIM data acquisition with GPS, AMB transponder, lightened wiring harness, carbon-fiber hood, adjustable rear wing, and 19-inch wheels. |
Ford notes that ideal ride height and alignment vary by track. The listed setup should not be treated as a universal alignment or suspension prescription. Consult the car’s documentation and qualified race-car support for setup decisions. See Ford’s 2014 Boss 302S owner’s manual for its operating and component guidance.

How does the Boss 302S differ from a Boss 302?
The key distinction is purpose. Ford describes the Boss 302S as an off-road-only competition car with racing safety equipment, track-focused brakes and suspension, and data acquisition. The road-going Boss 302 is a different model; the 302S manual says its engine is based on the 2012 Mustang Boss 302 engine, but that shared basis does not make the cars interchangeable or establish that they have the same equipment.
Ford’s material also lists the Boss 302R, but the available specifications do not provide a complete apples-to-apples comparison among the 302S, 302R, and road-going Boss 302. Avoid inferring differences in performance or equipment beyond what documentation for the particular model or vehicle establishes. Ford’s competition-vehicle resources are available at Ford Performance Parts’ competition vehicles page.

What should you inspect before a Boss 302S track session?
Ford’s manual calls for regular checks of fasteners, wiring, belts, hoses, and tires, as well as an inspection before each session and after each use. It also directs owners to review diagnostic codes with Ford’s Pro-Cal tool and data in the AIM data-acquisition system. Use the manual and the instructions for installed components rather than assuming ordinary street-Mustang maintenance guidance applies.
- Before the session, inspect fasteners, wiring, belts, hoses, and tires; check the car before each outing.
- Review diagnostic codes with the Ford Pro-Cal tool and check the AIM data-acquisition information as directed by the manual.
- After use, inspect the vehicle again and address issues before its next outing.
- For setup, account for the track: Ford says optimal ride height and alignment vary by circuit.
Ford specifically warns that changing components in the Boss 302S brake package can degrade braking performance, increase stopping distances, or worsen pedal feel. The manual names PFC racing pads but does not establish an exact pad compound or current replacement part number. Confirm the installed caliper and rotor arrangement, racing series requirements, compound, and supplier fitment before buying brake consumables or changing the system.
