The 2015 BMW X5 makes a strong case as a performance-focused grand-tourer: it combines brisk acceleration with confident handling and a quiet, supple ride. Its technology and comfort features vary by engine, package and build, however, and its high price and child-sized optional third row keep it from being the best choice for every buyer. The “best” label is an editorial judgment, not a result established by a broad comparison with rivals.
What changed for the 2015 BMW X5?
BMW updated the eight-speed automatic transmission for 2015 and published quicker 0–60 mph times than its 2014 model-year figures. The company described the change as a “Technical update for the 8-speed automatic transmission leading to better efficiency and faster acceleration:” but its release quantified acceleration changes, not a specific fuel-economy improvement. BMW’s 2015 model-year update also noted that, starting with October 2014 production, the 35i’s N55 engine displacement would increase from 2,979 cc to 3,004 cc. Production timing matters; confirm a particular vehicle’s build rather than assuming it has that change.

Equipment changes included a standard Sport Leather steering wheel. Comfort Access keyless entry became standard on the xDrive50i. Bluetooth audio streaming moved into the standard 6NH hands-free Bluetooth and USB audio connection, while Enhanced USB/Bluetooth and Smartphone Integration functions remained available as a separate $500 option. The Premium Package added four-zone automatic climate control, and soft-close doors became a standalone $600 option. Night Vision with Pedestrian Detection was a $2,300 option. These are model-year equipment details, not a promise that every used X5 has the same technology.

The US-market range covered rear-wheel drive, all-wheel drive, diesel torque and V8 power. BMW’s initial model-year prices included a $950 destination and handling charge. On January 2, 2015, BMW announced adjusted prices effective January 5; both sets of figures are shown below as historical new-car MSRPs, not current used-car values. 35i: the balanced choice
The turbocharged six-cylinder 35i versions offer the same listed output and BMW acceleration figure, with the choice between rear-wheel drive and xDrive all-wheel drive. The sDrive35i has the higher listed combined economy estimate; xDrive35i may better suit buyers who prioritize all-wheel-drive traction. Neither is the quickest version, but both provide the brisk performance that underpins the X5’s touring appeal.

xDrive35d: torque and the strongest listed economy
The diesel gives up horsepower to the 35i but has substantially more listed torque, 413 lb-ft, and the range’s highest EPA-referenced combined estimate. It is an appealing specification for buyers who value diesel torque and fuel economy, though recall history for certain diesel vehicles makes VIN-specific checks particularly important.

The V8 is the clear acceleration leader in BMW’s published figures, reaching 60 mph in 4.7 seconds. That performance comes with the lowest listed combined fuel-economy estimate and the highest original and adjusted MSRP in the range. Choose it for power rather than efficiency or value.

How does the X5 behave on a long drive?
Edmunds describes the X5 as an SUV for drivers who want a sport-sedan feel rather than truck-like responses. Its review praises confident handling, a quiet and supple ride over rough city streets and freeways, and strong acceleration across the engine families. That combination makes the X5 a credible long-distance vehicle: it can cover miles comfortably without giving up the responsive character associated with BMW.
Practicality is more qualified. The second row splits into three sections for cargo flexibility. An optional third row exists, but Edmunds says it is suitable only for little kids. The review points to the Acura MDX and Infiniti QX60 as less expensive options with more accommodating third rows. For buyers who regularly carry adults or older children in the back, those family-focused alternatives may be more useful; the X5 is more persuasive when driving character and front- and second-row comfort matter more.

How much technology does a 2015 X5 have?
The model-year range offered substantial technology and comfort equipment, including Night Vision with Pedestrian Detection, keyless entry, smartphone integration, multiple USB/Bluetooth configurations and four-zone climate control. But “the most technology” is not a safe blanket description: equipment depended on variant, package and build date, and some functions were options. BMW also changed package content and trim-line pricing for 2015.
For a used vehicle, verify the original window sticker or a VIN-specific build record before assuming a feature is present. In particular, distinguish standard Bluetooth audio streaming from the separately optional Enhanced USB/Bluetooth and Smartphone Integration functions. Check package content and production date for equipment affected by BMW’s changes.

What should a used-X5 buyer check?
Confirm equipment and get the correct manual
Use the VIN to confirm the vehicle’s factory equipment and build date. BMW’s digital owner’s manual lookup requires the 17-digit VIN and provides manuals for select model years. Confirm that the manual edition matches the vehicle, and check fitment carefully for any parts or accessories.
Check recalls by VIN, not by model name alone
Edmunds’ recall summaries include campaigns affecting defined X5 model-year or production groups, not every 2015 vehicle. Reported examples include an EGR cooler concern on some xDrive35d diesels, where leakage could contribute to intake-manifold melting and fire; airbag inflator and head-protection system connection issues for specified groups; and a rear seat-belt attachment issue involving a small group equipped with the optional rear comfort seat. The summaries also list a high-pressure diesel fuel-pump recall, and the diesel EGR campaign later received a remedy notice. Check the specific VIN for open and completed recalls, then request repair documentation.
Review condition and service documentation
Ask for maintenance and repair records, including documentation of completed recall work. Is the 2015 BMW X5 the best grand-touring SUV?
It is a convincing choice for a driver who wants a refined, quiet ride, confident handling and a wide range of powertrains and available equipment. The xDrive35d prioritizes torque and the strongest listed fuel-economy estimate; the xDrive50i prioritizes acceleration; the 35i variants balance performance with a choice of rear- or all-wheel drive. The X5’s premium price and limited optional third row make it less compelling as a value-led family hauler. With no broad, controlled comparison establishing a universal winner, “best” depends on which of those priorities matters most.
