Stakes. Period coverage described its design and a goal of exceeding 1,000 mph, but the available sources do not establish that it was completed, tested, or made a record attempt.
What was the Sonic Wind LSRV?
Sonic Wind was a proposed land-speed record vehicle built around rocket propulsion. In 2011, Aerospace Testing International described it as a liquid-propellant rocket automobile in the build phase. A 2013 interview presented Stakes’s ambition in personal terms: “I’d like to think that I’m building an American icon, a living legacy. I’ll donate it to the Smithsonian after it goes 1,000 mph.” That was an aspiration, not evidence that the car reached the speed or was donated.
What were its reported specifications?
The 2011 feature gave the LSRV a reported length of 48 feet and width of 79 inches. It also described the vehicle as about five feet high at its T-tail, with slightly more than eight square feet of frontal area. These are historical design figures from that feature, not confirmation of a completed vehicle’s final dimensions.
The same article said Bonneville was being considered for testing. That records a plan at the time; it does not establish that testing took place.

What engine was it designed to use?
Period coverage described a highly modified Thiokol XLR-99, an engine originally built for the North American X-15 program. A 2012 technical feature said the design retained the original injector but paired it with a new composite combustion chamber and nozzle. It also reported a change in fuel from ammonia to methanol, for stated performance and safety reasons. These reports describe the intended configuration; they do not independently verify final hardware or operation.
How was the car supposed to manage speed and safety?
The 2011 account described several proposed aerodynamic and stopping measures:

- A ground-drag plate deployed by lowering the vehicle’s rear.
- A driver safety capsule designed to separate from the vehicle.
Those are reported design features, not proof that the systems were built or tested.
Did the Sonic Wind LSRV break the land-speed record?
No result is established by the cited period sources. The 2011 feature described “well over 1,000mph” as a projected target, not a measured speed. The FIA’s official land-speed records page displays the outright record as 763.035 mph (1,227.985 km/h). That is record context, not evidence of a Sonic Wind run. The FIA describes recognized straight-line record attempts as involving opposing-direction runs under the applicable process and regulations.

What is the vehicle’s current status?
The sources cited here are historical, and they do not establish the LSRV’s present completion, ownership, testing history, achieved speed, record-attempt status, or whether Stakes’s hoped-for Smithsonian donation occurred. It is therefore most accurate to describe Sonic Wind as a documented design and ambition, not a verified record-setting car.
