The “2011 Peugeot 908 HDi-FAP” at Le Mans was Team Oreca-Matmut’s older #10 prototype, not one of Peugeot’s three newer factory 908s. Driven by Nicolas Lapierre, Loïc Duval and Olivier Panis, the Oreca car finished fifth overall in the 2011 24 Hours of Le Mans. The factory cars were a different entry, with a different engine; the naming distinction is essential to understanding the result and specifications.
Which Peugeot 908 raced at Le Mans in 2011?
There were two generations of Peugeot prototype on the 2011 grid. The factory team entered three newer cars, called simply the Peugeot 908 in contemporary results. Team Oreca-Matmut entered the older #10 Peugeot 908 HDi-FAP. The Le Mans retrospective also distinguishes the newer car’s 2011 name from the earlier 908 HDi FAP. The race’s official retrospective recounts the duel between the leading Audi and the factory #9 Peugeot, followed by the other Peugeot entries.
That means a reference to the 2011 Peugeot 908 HDi-FAP at Le Mans most precisely identifies the Oreca #10, rather than the factory #7, #8 or #9. The cars shared the Peugeot 908 family name, but they were not interchangeable entries or technical specifications.
Who drove the #10 Oreca Peugeot, and where did it finish?
Nicolas Lapierre, Loïc Duval and Olivier Panis shared the #10 Team Oreca-Matmut 908 HDi-FAP. It finished fifth overall. The 2011 classification lists the Oreca car as a Peugeot 908 HDi-FAP and records its engine as a 5,486 cc V12 bi-turbo diesel. The Le Mans organization’s Oreca preview identifies the entry and its drivers.

The three newer factory Peugeot 908s finished immediately ahead of it: #9 second, #8 third and #7 fourth, according to the event classification. Thus the #10 was the best-placed older HDi-FAP entry in the Peugeot group, but not the Peugeot involved in the final fight for victory.
How was the Oreca car different from the factory 2011 908?
| Entry | 2011 naming | Engine information | Le Mans result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Team Oreca-Matmut #10 | Peugeot 908 HDi-FAP | 5,486 cc V12 bi-turbo diesel, as listed in the 2011 classification | Fifth overall |
| Peugeot factory #7, #8 and #9 | Peugeot 908 | 3.7-litre diesel, approximately 550 PS, per Peugeot’s 2011 description | Fourth, third and second, respectively |
Peugeot’s 2011 technical preview gives the 3.7-litre, approximately 550 PS specification for its new factory 908. Those figures should not be assigned to the #10 Oreca HDi-FAP: the classification gives that older car a 5,486 cc V12 bi-turbo diesel. The available figures establish the distinction; they do not provide a complete side-by-side specification sheet.

Why the #10’s fifth place is not the famous close finish
The often-cited 13.854-second margin at the 2011 finish refers to the winning Audi and Peugeot’s factory #9, not the Oreca #10. Peugeot’s post-race report says the #9 was 6.5 seconds behind Audi after the final routine pit stops and notes Audi’s advantage on new Michelin tyres. It also reports that the #9 lost nine minutes after a front-right suspension repair following an accident. Those details describe the factory car’s second-place run; they are not the #10’s race story.
In that report, Peugeot Sport technical director Bruno Famin said, in translation, that the team had achieved its reliability goal, while speed decided the race and Peugeot lacked something, particularly on hard tyres. Peugeot’s post-race account places the remark in the context of the factory team’s contest with Audi.

Finding a model of the 2011 Peugeot at Le Mans
A specialist Le Mans model catalog lists Spark model S2594 as a 1:43 replica of the #9 Team Peugeot Total 908 from the 2011 race. That is the factory #9, not the #10 Oreca 908 HDi-FAP discussed here. The catalog record verifies the model’s identity and scale, but does not establish current stock, price or seller availability. For a model intended to represent the Oreca entry, check that the car number and team are #10 Oreca-Matmut rather than #9 Team Peugeot Total.
