Peugeot unveiled it as the 208 Type R5 in 2012, then announced the 208 T16 name in February 2013 as a nod to the 205 Turbo 16. Its period launch sheet listed a 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, four-wheel drive and a five-speed sequential gearbox. This is the rally car—not the separate 208 T16 Pikes Peak project.
What is the Peugeot 208 T16 R5?
The 208 T16 R5 was Peugeot’s customer rally car developed for the FIA R5 category. At its 2012 Paris Motor Show unveiling, Peugeot described the 208 Type R5 as the successor to its 207 Super 2000 in the customer rally range. In February 2013, the company said the provisional “Type R5” name would become “208 T16,” recalling the earlier 205 Turbo 16. The clearest name for the rally car is therefore Peugeot 208 T16 R5 or 208 T16 (Type R5). Peugeot’s 2012 unveiling announcement and 2013 naming announcement document that progression.
Not the Pikes Peak 208 T16
The name can cause confusion because Peugeot also built a radically different 208 T16 for the Pikes Peak hill climb. The specifications and plans here refer to the FIA R5 rally car, not that Pikes Peak machine.

Who was the 208 T16 R5 for?
Peugeot planned the car for private customer teams and Peugeot importers competing in national and international rallies, including the European Rally Championship, from 2014. Its intended role was different from a factory-only prototype: Peugeot presented it as a car customers could run in competition. The company’s March 2013 development announcement said testing would cover gravel and asphalt rallies and set a 10,000 km target before homologation. That figure was a stated target, not confirmation that the distance was completed. Peugeot’s development programme announcement.
What was its early competition milestone?
Craig Breen and co-driver Scott Martin won the 2014 Acropolis Rally, giving the 208 T16 its first European Rally Championship victory on its competitive debut there. Peugeot’s announcement and contemporaneous rally coverage report the result. Peugeot’s Acropolis Rally announcement; FIA ERC report.
