Engine, drivetrain and standard equipment
Polaris’s official 2014 model page describes a four-stroke, liquid-cooled, carbureted single-cylinder engine with 455 cc displacement. The drivetrain uses on-demand true AWD/2WD, an automatic PVT transmission with Park, Reverse, Neutral, Low and High, and shaft final drive. Standard and SE differences
The 2014 owner’s manual covers both the Sportsman 400 H.O. and 400 H.O. SE, so check which trim you have before applying tire, clearance or suspension figures. The standard model has 25-inch tires; the SE uses 24-inch tires. The manual also gives different ground clearance and suspension-travel specifications by trim.

The official model page lists overall dimensions of 83 × 48 × 48 in, a 50.5 in wheelbase, 11.25 in ground clearance, and an estimated dry weight of 688 lb. These are model-page specifications; the manual’s standard ground-clearance figure is 11 in. Preserve the source context rather than treating the two clearance figures as identical.

Load limits and towing
Polaris publishes several different load figures for this ATV. They describe distinct limits and should not be substituted for one another.
- Maximum weight capacity: the manual specifies 485 lb (220 kg).
- Rack limits: 90 lb (40.8 kg) on the front rack and 180 lb (81.6 kg) on the rear rack.
- Hitch tongue weight: no more than 120 lb (54 kg); rear-rack load plus tongue weight must not exceed 180 lb (81.6 kg).
- Payload figure: Polaris’s official model page lists 450 lb with a 180 lb rider. This is a separately presented model-page figure, not the same measure as the manual’s maximum weight capacity.
- Hitch towing rating: the manual lists 1,225 lb (555.7 kg).
- Unbraked trailer capacity: the manual separately lists 1,786 lb. Do not interpret this as the hitch rating or as a blanket assurance that a trailer of that weight is safe in every condition.
Follow the owner’s manual and the labels on the ATV when loading or towing; the ratings do not remove the need to account for terrain, trailer setup and operating conditions. Polaris’s manual states: “Improper tire pressure or overloading can cause loss of control.” Polaris owner’s manuals and resources.

Tire size and pressure
For the standard 400 H.O., Polaris lists 25 × 8-12 front and 25 × 10-12 rear tires. The manual specifies 5.0 psi (34.5 kPa) cold for each. Check pressure when tires are cold, confirm the ATV’s trim and tire fitment, and follow the vehicle labels. The SE has 24-inch tires, so do not assume the standard model’s tire specification applies.
Fluid capacities and other specifications
The 2014 owner’s manual lists these capacities. They are fill capacities, not substitutes for the correct fluid specification, level-checking procedure or service instructions in the manual.

Fuel capacity differs between the two Polaris sources: the model page lists 4.1 US gal (15.5 L), while the manual lists 4.25 gal (16 L). The model page also lists 11.25 in ground clearance, whereas the manual gives 11 in for the standard trim and 9 in for the SE. Use the manual and your vehicle’s labels for service and operation rather than silently combining these published figures.
