The 2012 Toyota FT-86 was not the production car’s standard name: Toyota launched the Japanese-market coupe as the 86, while Toyota UK sold it as the GT86. “FT-86” belongs to the concept’s lineage, including the FT-86 II shown before the production model arrived.
Was the 2012 Toyota FT-86 sold as the FT-86?
No. Toyota’s FT-86 II was a 2011 concept that indicated the design direction of its forthcoming sports car. When Toyota announced the Japanese production model, it called it the 86; Toyota UK used the GT86 name. The concept label and production badges are related, but they are not interchangeable market names. Toyota’s FT-86 II concept announcement and production launch announcement document the distinction.
Toyota said the name 86 paid homage to the AE86 Corolla Levin and Sprinter Trueno models, which it dates to 1983–1987. The Japanese production car launched on April 6, 2012. Toyota’s launch announcement and Toyota’s vehicle heritage archive give the name and launch context.
What kind of car was the 2012 Toyota 86?
Toyota described the car as a compact, rear-wheel-drive sports coupe with a front-midship engine layout. Its heritage archive identifies it as a two-door, four-seat coupe with a front engine and rear-wheel drive. Toyota characterized its development goal as “a unique rear-wheel-drive vehicle, with intuitive handling, that embodies the essence of driving enjoyment.” That is the manufacturer’s description, not an independent road-test finding. The figures below are Toyota manufacturer data for the Japanese-market car at launch. They are historical specifications, not current prices or independent performance measurements. The GT figures are grade-specific; they should not be assumed to describe every 86.

Toyota’s D-4S system combines direct and port fuel injection. The engine, dimensions, and GT grade mass are from Toyota’s vehicle archive; the launch-era Japanese GT catalog also lists the 1,998 cc engine and 200 PS (147 kW) output.

Japanese grades, transmissions, and original prices
Toyota’s Japanese launch lineup comprised RC, G, GT, and GT Limited. RC was a manual-only customization and competition base grade; G, GT, and GT Limited were offered with either manual or automatic transmissions. The launch announcement listed prices from ¥1,990,000 for the RC manual to ¥3,050,000 for the GT Limited automatic. Toyota said the listed prices included consumption tax but excluded recycling fees, and could differ in Hokkaido and Okinawa. Toyota’s February 2, 2012 launch announcement sets out the grade and price details.
For the Japanese GT specifically, Toyota listed ¥2,790,000 with a manual transmission and ¥2,870,000 with an automatic transmission. These are original launch prices, not present-day used-car values. Toyota’s launch announcement provides the figures and price qualifications.

How the UK GT86 differed at launch
Toyota UK announced the GT86 as one high-specification version, available with manual or automatic transmission. Its March 30, 2012 release listed a limited-slip differential, dual-zone climate control, sports seats, bi-xenon headlights, and 17-inch alloy wheels as standard. Toyota Touch and Go navigation and leather/Alcantara upholstery were options. Deliveries were due to begin July 1, 2012. These are UK launch details, not a universal equipment list. Toyota UK’s announcement lists the equipment and timing.
The UK on-the-road launch prices were £24,995 for the manual and £26,495 for the automatic. They describe the UK launch in 2012, not current prices. Toyota UK’s release gives the prices.

Which specification applies to a particular car?
Start with the vehicle’s market and grade rather than relying on the broad “2012 FT-86” label. Toyota’s Japan and UK releases show why: the badges, grade structures, equipment descriptions, and original prices vary by market. For a comparison, identify the market and trim first, then check transmission, equipment, and grade-specific mass against the relevant Toyota information. Do not treat a concept specification as a production specification.
