Bugatti unveiled it at the Geneva Motor Show. Its headline 410 km/h (255 mph) maximum was for closed tracks with special safety precautions—not public-road driving.
What was the 2012 Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse?
The Vitesse was a specific version of the Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport, not a name for every 2012 Veyron and not the standard Grand Sport. Bugatti presented it in 2012 as the open-top counterpart to the Veyron 16.4 Super Sport, bringing that model’s 1,200 hp output to a roadster. The distinction matters: the Vitesse’s performance figures and record story belong to this variant.
Bugatti said it raised the standard Grand Sport’s output mainly with four larger turbochargers and new intercoolers. The company also described reinforced drivetrain components and revised seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox gearing. Those are the manufacturer’s account of the engineering changes, rather than findings from an independent teardown. Bugatti’s March 2012 premiere release introduced the car at the Geneva Motor Show.
How fast is a 2012 Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse?
Bugatti published a maximum speed of 410 km/h (255 mph), achievable only on closed tracks with special safety precautions. In normal handling mode, the car is electronically limited to 375 km/h (233 mph). The higher figure should not be read as a public-road capability.

What was the Vitesse’s open-top speed record?
Bugatti’s 2022 retrospective reports that a Vitesse reached 408.84 km/h in 2013, setting an open-top production-roadster speed record. The retrospective said the record still stood when it was published in 2022; that statement does not establish the record’s status in 2026. Bugatti’s 2022 account of the Vitesse frames the run as a continuation of the Veyron’s performance story.
How many Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse cars were made?
Bugatti’s 2019 retrospective says 92 Vitesse cars were built within a total run of 150 modern-era Veyron roadsters. It also says the World Record Car edition was limited to eight cars and sold out immediately. These are production figures reported by Bugatti, not an independently audited registry count. Bugatti’s 2019 retrospective places the Vitesse within the broader roadster production story.

Why does the Vitesse matter in the Veyron’s legacy?
The Vitesse is a late, high-performance expression of the Veyron programme: it combined the Super Sport’s power with the open-top Grand Sport format. That pairing made it distinct from the standard Grand Sport while preserving the Veyron’s defining emphasis on extreme speed. Bugatti later described the Veyron as both a modern hyper sports car and a young classic. Those descriptions reflect the manufacturer’s perspective, while the Vitesse’s limited production and reported record help explain its place in the model’s history.
When production began in July 2012, Bugatti announced a launch price of just under US$2.5 million. That is historical launch pricing, not a current resale estimate. In the same announcement, then-president Wolfgang Dürheimer said, “The rapid success of the Super Sport convinced us to increase the performance of the Bugatti roadster. Once again our engineers worked hard to demonstrate that Bugatti is able to constantly redefine the boundaries of what is technically feasible.” The quotation records the company’s stated ambition, not an independent assessment.

What the production story does—and does not—tell a buyer
Scarcity and a record claim can inform a car’s historical interest, but neither establishes the value, condition, provenance, or investment prospects of a particular Vitesse. Bugatti’s 2017 description of its Certified seal said the programme confirmed a Bugatti’s technical and visual condition and helped maintain or increase value; it is not a guarantee of future value. Likewise, Bugatti’s 2013 announcement of 30 dealerships and service partners in 18 countries is a historical network count, not a current service directory.
