The separate button on the right, beneath the license-plate lamp shield, releases only the liftgate glass. If you are using the correct control and the gate still will not release, check the relevant fuses and relay, then use the symptoms to guide electrical and mechanical diagnosis rather than replacing parts by guesswork.
Use the correct release and unlock the liftgate first
The 2010 Mariner has separate controls for the glass and the full liftgate. Ford’s 2010 Mariner Hybrid Owner’s Guide says to unlock the liftgate with the power door locks or remote entry, then press the middle control button below the license plate to open it. The right-side control under the license-plate lamp shield opens the glass, not the full gate. Ford 2010 Mariner Hybrid Owner’s Guide
If the glass opens but the full gate does not, the two release functions are responding differently. That observation helps narrow the checks, but it does not by itself prove that the liftgate actuator has failed.
Check the liftgate fuses and relay
The 2010 Mariner guide and manual transcription identify these relevant circuit locations and ratings. Confirm them against the guide and fuse-box cover for your vehicle’s configuration before removing or replacing anything. 2010 Mariner fuse and relay listings

| Location | Item | Listed rating or function |
|---|---|---|
| Passenger-compartment fuse panel | Fuse 17 | 20A; all lock motor feeds, liftgate release, and liftglass release |
| Underhood power-distribution box | Fuse 7 | 15A; liftgate latch |
| Relay listing | Relay 31F | Identified as the liftgate latch relay in a secondary manual transcription |
- Replace a blown fuse only with one of the specified rating.
- If the replacement fuse blows again, stop swapping fuses and have the circuit diagnosed; a recurring failure indicates a problem that needs investigation.
- A fuse or relay that appears intact does not establish that the switch, wiring, actuator, linkage, or latch is working.
Use the symptom to choose the next diagnostic check
Note whether the glass release works, whether you hear a click or see actuator movement when pressing the full-gate button, and whether the gate is difficult to close or seems to bind. These clues can direct inspection, but none is a remote diagnosis on its own.
| Observed symptom | What it suggests checking | What would confirm the path |
|---|---|---|
| No apparent response from the full-gate button | Unlocking and button choice first, then fuse/relay and the electrical command path | Testing the circuit and actuator with the correct wiring diagram and safe procedure |
| Actuator clicks or moves, but the gate remains latched | Latch, actuator, and release linkage for sticking or binding | Inspection showing that the actuator receives the command but the mechanism does not release |
| Gate is difficult to open or close, or appears to bind | Physical latch/striker alignment as well as the release mechanism | Vehicle-specific inspection and confirmation that any applicable service bulletin procedure fits |
A Mariner owner reported in April 2011 that the glass still opened while the actuator appeared to push its release rod without freeing the gate. The owner said gently pushing the rod released it and later concluded the actuator needed replacement. This is one owner’s account, not proof that another vehicle with similar symptoms needs the same repair. Mariner owner report

If the actuator does not move, test the electrical path
When the actuator shows no movement, check whether it receives the release command before condemning the actuator. A secondary mechanic Q&A describes checking for power on the green/white actuator wire after pressing the button and mentions the switch’s ground path, fuse 7, and a relay. Treat that as diagnostic advice, not an official wiring specification: use the correct workshop wiring diagram for the vehicle and an appropriate safe electrical testing procedure. Secondary electrical diagnostic advice
A failed switch, electrical feed, wiring, relay, actuator, or latch may produce a no-release complaint. The symptoms alone do not distinguish these possibilities reliably.

Consider striker alignment only when the symptoms fit
A page reproducing Ford TSB 12-4-3, dated April 5, 2012, says some 2008–2011 Escape and Mariner vehicles built on or before March 2, 2011 may be difficult to open or close because of striker position relative to the latch. Its summarized repair removes the striker, places a washer underneath, and reinstalls and adjusts it according to Workshop Manual Section 501-03 torque specifications. Reproduced Ford TSB 12-4-3
This bulletin describes a possible condition for vehicles meeting its applicability; it does not establish that every liftgate that will not open has a striker problem. Confirm the bulletin and full official procedure for the specific vehicle before attempting that repair.

Confirm the failure before buying a replacement actuator
The available information does not establish an exact replacement part number for every 2010 Mariner configuration. If testing points to an actuator, verify fitment by VIN and configuration, and compare the electrical connector and mounting details before ordering. If the actuator receives the release command but the linkage sticks, inspect the latch and actuator assembly; if it does not move, investigate the command and power/control path first.
Safety if the liftgate or glass is open
Ford’s owner guide warns against driving with the liftgate or liftgate window open because exhaust gases, including carbon monoxide, may enter the vehicle. If driving with one open cannot be avoided, the guide says to keep the vents open. Ford 2010 Mariner Hybrid Owner’s Guide
